Are padded gloves worn in NHB/UFC?

Yes, but they're very thin. Not like boxing gloves.

Those aren't too bad...they don't look very restrictive. Are there any illegal striking surfaces in UFC (like in boxing, where you can only hit with a certain area of the glove)? Can you finger strike (poke/claw/whatever) or are the gloves only open to allow grappling?

CanadianBadAss

where can i buy gloves like that?

You can get the gloves at either of these sites:

www.ouano.com (http://www.ouano.com)
www.ufc.tv (http://www.ufc.tv)

Although, the "UFC" gloves are built for competition (meaning they have minimal padding), so something that may work if you plan on doing a lot of sparring - and more forgiving on your partner - are Kickskin gloves, which come in 8 oz. and 10 oz. weights. (They are also cheaper!!)

You can find the Kickskin gloves here:

While we're talking about gloves, does anyone know how to take the grip bars out of a set of leather wrist wrap-style gloves without ruining the leather? I've heard of people doing this, but I don't know how. I have a pair of the harbinger wrist wrap gloves and the grip bar irritates me.

Waidan

looks like anything involving clawing or raking is flat-out illegal. That's a bummer, but understandable for competition.

From what I can tell, finger strikes (pokes) are just fine, but most of the favorable targets are no-no's.

I wonder how those gloves would work with some of the more specialized hand-shapes, like panther (raking) fist, phoenix eye, etc.

Does anyone have experience using these striking techniques with these gloves?

I have a pair of Harninger gloves (without the palm bar) that I use, and I love them. I am planning on picking up a pair of the Kickskin's next month because I think the open palm would be better for what I do.

Waidan,

>>>I wonder how those gloves would work with some of the more specialized hand-shapes, like panther (raking) fist, phoenix eye, etc. Does anyone have experience using these striking techniques with these gloves?<<<

I personally don't employ the panther fist strikes you're speaking of, but I don't ever have a problem utilizing a phoenix eye with my Harbingers, and I believe I would have an even easier time employing one with a pair of those open palm Kickskin's I mentioned.

I have found to have pretty much the full range of options in regards to striking, grabbing, trapping, techniques, etc with my Harbingers.

Mr. Nemo

Watchman: when you get the kikskin's, could you post a review? I like the harbingers, but apparently they don't give as much protection for the opponent as some other gloves.

Those are the exact gloves.

To tell you the truth, I felt the same way about them when I was shopping around the internet for some gloves. I knew the MMA crowd raved about them, but from surface appearance I didn't think they would be ideal for all the small motor motions in Wing Chun.

Well, in one of my forays to the local sporting goods store I spied a bunch of them on a shelf, popped a pair on and tried them out right there. I must say I was pleasantly surprised by the range of motion they allowed, and after having personally field tested them for the past two months I would highly recommend them.

Mr. Nemo,

I'll be sure and post a review of the Kickskins after I get a set and sufficiently smack my little brother around with them. :D

>>>I like the harbingers, but apparently they don't give as much protection for the opponent as some other gloves.<<<

I would agree that they don't allow for much protection for your opponent. When sparring I usually don't go full power to the head because of that, but the Harbingers a MUCH better for regular sparring than the Ouanos. The Kickskins seem like a better option for allowing of more power.

Really you couldn't have a more relaxed set of rules and expect to attract nation-wide sponsers and exposure.

There are a few rules which seem a bit stange to me (I'd feel pretty safe shooting for a guys legs knowing he can't hit my head or spine, drop an elbow, grab my hair/ears, etc). Really though, to keep their $$ rolling in, and keep the event open to public consumption, they've got to keep the fighters reasonably safe from traumatic injury. I think the rules accomplish that.

Click here for website (http://www.ringside.com/store/prodinfo.asp?number=IGRAP&variation=&aitem=1&mitem=1)

These are "grappling gloves" made by Ringside. They look to be replicas of the Ouanos, but are MUCH cheaper ($35.00).

I also read on the UG that they have nearly as much knuckle padding as the Harbingers. Looks like I will have to make another purchase.
