I have just made mine
It is to practise Kung Fu for at least 1hr a day, and to play my guitar for at least 2hrs a day. I love both of these things, but don't do either as much as I should, and when I do its always sporadically. So I've decided to be more regimental about it and to set myself a minimum.

You guys think I can do this? I'm a big believer in discipline and all, but is it asking to much of myself? If so, tell me. If not, give me some motivation please :D

BTW: What are everyone elses Resolutions, and why?

PS. Hope you all had a great Xmas :)

i would say good luck in your training :)

My new years resolution is to train more also...i've got a hard qigong test in May so have to train up hard for that. I really want to be able to blitz it.

The best way i have found to organise my time is to make a timetable...it sounds kinda nerdy, but it seems to work. The times are never as exact as they are on it - but at least i know what i have to do each day! It covers training, Classes, study and recreation time of course. Am i a geek or wat :D

Thing is though, i'm at University and the total opposite from a 'typical' student. i will have to get up at 5am to train - that's when most others are just going to bed :p
They usually wake me up around 3am - so now i can get my own back waking them up at 5am :)

Anyway, good luck in whateve ru do...

It's not nerdy (s******) :D I actually find planning really helps. I am the most disorganised person in the world, so the powers of planning frequently amaze me! I'm off to Uni this year if I get through these A levels, so hopefully I'll have more time on my hands.

Training at 5.30am though. THAT is dedication. At about 5.30, I'm still dreaming of becoming Superman/T1000 and saving the world/kicking some arse/bedding Uma Thurman :)

5 AM to 5:30 is my favorite time to train, but I have a hard time staying on that schedule. I suppose that'll be my resolution, to practice every morning before work.

Also, to change my eating habits. My family happens to be masters of cookie making and junk food eating, and I have mastered the system, so I've gotta change that, or I'll end up being Marlon Brando.

DelicateSound
12-26-2001, 01:26 PM
Beats Ginger Fist's family style :D

I also must stop with the junk food. Esp. The chocolate-filled Oatcakes and the caramelised Back Bacon :D

I can NEVER train that early, I'm just not awake enough.

Ah Marlon, how he has fallen. An example to us all of how we MUST keep in shape. Hell, I had to watch "A Streetcar Named Desire" for my English Literature A-level, and I didn't recognise him, even though I'd seen his name in the titles! But he did put in a good performance in Apocalypse Now......

For me, its a matter of schedule. Two nights a week, I have to go to kung fu, three if I need to run class that week. At least one night, I'll probably need to work late. Therefore, I'll only have one or two week nights to spend with my family, and can't really do kung fu during that time. However, early in the morning, they're all asleep, anyway, so they won't miss me.

Plus, it makes me feel sort of in touch with the old masters, practicing before the sun is up, in the wind and cold.

DelicateSound
12-26-2001, 01:35 PM
DREAM: Standing in the morning light, the sound of the waves as calming as the womb, the morning rays warming my back.

REALITY: Noise of traffic p!sses me off mucho, morning light is in my eyes and the morning rays do nothing to avert the da mn coldness of the British winter.

Nope, I'm training inside, usual time, usual place. Maybe if you live in Kansas City, but NOT in Stoke-on-Trent. :)

KC Elbows
12-26-2001, 01:42 PM
Yeah, cold sucks, but I'm pretty well designed against it(big German *******). Camped for a week one time in an arctic blast(negative 40-50 degree wind chill factor). I was too stubborn to give up, so I did a huge amount of meditation and chi kung, then practiced every waking moment. Plus lived in Minnesota two years, that should've taught me to move to the desert, but I guess I'm a slow learner.

The wonderful thing about practicing outside in winter is that there is absolutely no way you will slack off your practice as long as you're out there.

Does it rain in winter where you are, or iis it colder than that? Near freezing rain is far worse than snow, IMHO.

DelicateSound
12-26-2001, 01:47 PM
It is ALWAYS raining, ALWAYS below about 8 degrees C, and almost always the most depressing sight bar Ralek's house.

Freezing rain is the norm during winter, but it ain't as bad in summer. Our climate is apparantly "temperate". Yeah right.

Although I still go hiking all the time. I just can't face going out in just my gi and getting laughed at by the neighbours :D

In SOT, frontal rainfall off Snowdonia pretty much f*cks us up 24/7.

dezhen2001
12-26-2001, 01:58 PM
well i'm at Uni right in the middle of Wolverhampton! Bloody freesing and usually raining also.

But i don't train outside in a gi. Bright White Gi = more chance of me being seen! That's why i wear balck :p

Seriously - that's why i go outside to train so early. Training takes a couple of hours, so i go when all the other students r dead to the world in their drunken coma :D
Also because i'm meant to train from 5am-7am and 5pm-7pm each day. The fear of the hammer breaking the bricks on my head is what wakes me up every morning :D

Actually i find it freshens me up and makes me feel awake. that way i can actually do some study early so i can b lazy later!

david

DelicateSound
12-26-2001, 03:58 PM
I don't usually train outside, only if I'm REALLY in the mood to train. I usually jog round the countryside of our nearby village (not in a gi!), then do some forms out back. I find that the fresh air helps a lot in my training, better than a stuffy old gym anyhow.

I do like the idea of training at 5.30, but I do too much at night. I'm never usually back before 11.30, and after that it takes ages to unwind. As soon as I form a band at Uni and go gigging, it'll kill me.

i can empathise with not training outside much.I live in dublin, ireland.so its generally not a nice idea to train outside, unless you wanna freeze your *ahems* off.

12-26-2001, 05:05 PM
u know i was only teasing about the gi thing :)

Training early suits me fine...even though i don't usually go to bed until about midnight. I guess i just need less sleep? But i know when i start training hard qigong properly, then i am meant to get at least 7 hours sleep. I guess i'll just have to make the sacrifices...**** - and ma gf is coming to stay :p

I think those are good goals to set for yourself. I can play guitar for two hours easy, and practicing MA for an hour isn't bad either. personally i like to do 1 1/2 hrs. of each, but that includes wieght training. I should really spend more time on my forms, I haven't done one in like two week since I hurt my shoulder snowboarding. I'm really envious of any of you who can still practice out side. i live right around 10,000 ft. and it's usally about -20F at 5am. My other goals are to gain ten pounds and write a lot more music. Not to get of topic but what kind of guitar/amp set up do you have DelicateSound? I found some good deals on some nice guitars last time i was in England.

As a surfer, I train the most in the winter because hopping into the Atlantic when its 38 degrees is reserved for only the best and biggest of waves.

With that said, Delicate Sound, can you do it? OF coarse. Anything CAN be done. It's a matter of committing to it and DOING it. One hour a day is nothing. Think of if you spent a mere 15 minutes at work training a principle, 15 minutes while cooking, 15 minutes between tv shows, and then put in a good 30 minutes, you're already past an hour.

Me, I train at class 2 times a week for 3 or 4 hours. On off days I mess around, play with and fine tune principles in my kitched here and there easily over an hour combined. Here at work, going into the mens room, are two spring loaded doors. Each time I go **** I do something to those doors. Walking to the dlei for lunch I do some chi-gung or work a wave strikes into my walking just to work the muscles, make them smooth.

Is there any action smoother than blinking? It's because we do it constantly. I know its the same with music. Forget TV! Forget the bars! Do what you want to do and it will get done. Best of luck.

For me, I am now on a swimming regiment to get back into shape after blowing out ,y knee a few months ago (no surfing = pot belly). I want to drop 15 lbs by May. I should be able to do this easy -- I swim for 30 minutes straight at the local pool every night I do not hit Chintown.

Once you set a routine, its easy to keep and you'll feel bad when you miss. Ocassional miss is fine. Ocoassional practice = no real skill.

DelicateSound
12-27-2001, 11:39 AM
I think that is the problem. I've never gotten into a routine, so I don't really know that feeling. I'm going to try, sporadic training is no good at all to anyone.

Surfing in winter though - O U C H !

I agree with the little bits of training though, I never sit down at the PC, I squat in horse stance until I collapse :D

Actually has helped, the amount I spend on here!

Bak Mei
12-27-2001, 12:06 PM
That's funny.

I have been swimming now for three weeks and that's it -- I'm in. If I go home now without swimming I feel like an oaf, and just think about how good I feel hopping out of the pool after doing 20 or 30 lapse. That feeling, the juices all going, is what gets me there. I'll keep it up until April or so, then I'll be surfing every little ripple that hits Long Island.

Good luck.

Happy New Year.

"Here at work, going into the mens room," - I thought I was the only one who trained in the mens room at work.

My routine: I walk in the rest room, stretch out, train my form, footwork w/wo/handwork, and even rock a few push ups.

Shhh, I go to the mens room just to train and get some blood circulating. Sitting in front of a pc all day in no good for the body. The only bad thing is that I usually spend 10 - 15 mins in there and I come out all flushed in the face and sometimes even sweaty. My boss must think I'm dropping chunks like a donkey.:D

Take care,

I have a large warehouse where I work and I do my forms in there about 3-4 times a day when nobody is around. It only takes about 30 minutes total, and sometimes I'll do 5 minutes of qi gong. I usually keep myself exercised while at work by playing hackysack outside in the summer or in the warehouse or bathrooms in the winter. Occasionally I will go to the bathroom and do 10 minutes of qi gong, and then come all out like it was nobody's business.

The summer is definetely nice though because I can take a 15 minute break from work, walk to a local park area and do some forms and stuff.

2hrs guitar, 1 hr Kungfu - Sounds good. You say you live with you're folks? I just want to give you some advice - do this while you still have the chance. After you move out, you will never have the same amount of free time that you do now. You may think that you will, but you won't. So put the hours in now, before it becomes stressful to do so.

A good weight for me is in the range of 175 to 185...
165 is what i graduated with in high school; for my build it's probably close to ideal, unless i've really put on that much muscle; but for being 5'10 165 seems to be the weight class where I wouldn't be a shortie.

When i was 145 in high school i remember that being way too thin, got dominated by one of the school nerds messing around in the hall at that weight.

187 was a big drop for me. I was weighing in the 190s before I started sweating that week. I think I could get back to the 190s with a solid month of good training and diet as ridiculous as that sounds.

To tell you the truth, my biggest obstacle in my next fight is not my skills nor my weight; it's actually my eyes. I wear a 6.00 in contacts. Without contacts or glasses, I'm 3 times what's considered "legally blind". Not to make excuses, but I feel a big reason for my loss was my inability to see my opponent. Will probably try to fight Thai in July (my "comeback fight), opposed to american kickboxing, as I like leg kicks way too much.

Hoping I can get my sh*t together and get back on track; but as Suntzu says "we're (BMore San Shou's) gonna make some noise this year".

GDA, appreciate your comments.

My expectation was that a jealous person's lies about my motivation and acts would not prevail. The assumption that no defense was needed cause, after all, these were lies. I waited for someone else who knew to put the matter to rest. Yup, everything would work out and honesty would prevail. My naivete was stunning.

Honesty is a component of character, not a substitute for knowing what to do or say at the right time.. One can say and do honestly, but the silent presence of honesty and modesty alone will not carry you. unbelievable that I would have thought so.
You are correct. Honesty is a reason to respect self. I assumed too much. am emerging with a different mindset and better outlook. known as learning the hard way. I feel better than I have in a long time. now if I only can get my body to work.

2. Be a good dad (I've got 6 months to prepare for that one.)

3. Lose some more weight

4. Write something that isn't an internet post or an e-mail.

5. Try to go to the gym 5 times a week (worked myself up to 4x/week this year)

6. Make it a habit to do some training early in the morning in the park (before people come out and laugh at me.)

7. Start Martial Arts again (probably Judo, unless my sifu starts teaching again, in which case I would enroll in a heartbeat.)

Good for you, man. I doubt I'll ever go beyond masters. People have tried to talk me into it, but I dunno. Maybe if I could do post grad at MIT or some other "can't pass up" type of school. I don't have anyone paying my bills tho. So, you know. I don't have my Bach yet, so I try not to overthink that ****. I'm just an engineer, I solve real life problems and I'm totally satisfied with that. Particle physics is just a hobby for me.

I wish I had been more into computers as a kid. I should have learned to write code when I was 12. Alas, it was not so. But I was building stuff. Always have. Moving electronics always came pretty easy, so it seemed like a natural course to take.

I imagine you get school paid for. That's sweet. That route is not for me, but good for you all the same.

this year, concentrate on the open-hand forms in 7*.
which means to relearn the ones that I forgot, and learn the ones I have left to learn.

I've been looking into pistol disarms - they aren't taught in the system, but there's enough of them online to practice a few. I've found 3 front facing ones that work about 80% of the time against a resisting opponent.
I'd like to buy a chalk knife then practice knife defense, but not like tcma - more like against a thug who's trying to shank me. The goal would be to find a couple of defensive tactics that work against a person who's intent on cutting me in the most efficient way possible which would be more like a shank attack rather than the big looping stuff you see in most martial arts. Not that I intend to be in a prison riot or confronted by a gun wielding thug, but in my world view - martial arts training should address the likely weapons and tactics that you'd see in real life.

I'd also like to pick up a copy of H. Nishioka's Foot Throws and work on them.

I've been thinking about signing up for a martial arts class close to my work and go during lunch.

My boys still go to kung fu class, but I lost interest some time ago. I started running, then entering races... after that running took over my spare time as far as fitness goes.

I miss taking the classes, but I miss the time spent with other people the most. There is no real consistency in the classes, so without the old class mates, it is not the same. I don't mean to blame the school, because in the end it is my fault.

I always found martial arts training better than running, but running has moments of solitude I never found in martial arts. I'm done babbling.

To finish building my stone wall enclosure in the woods (or rather, rock ledge on the slope of a hillside) by the spring. the pictures I showed last year of the site (OT thread: "Interesting New England Sites") were the beginning phase of construction, or the skeleton if you will. Much improvements since then. The Standing Stones are still up that I placed, including the one over 6 ft. high (maybe 7 ft.) I opened up the back of the stone enclosure so that there is a walk-thru gate in the back, which leads to an even higher spot on the ledge, where you can see Look-Out hill in the distance. I made a serpent effigy enclosure (eastern copperhead snake) against a boulder up there too.. the rock that is the snake's head is perfect. But back to the main stone wall enclosure. V 3.0 is going up. I only have pics of V 1.0. I am building the wall up in the back (originally for extra support), so that in the back it will rise up to be a large conical stone mound that rises above one's head level. I also attached a stone chamber to one of the sides of the wall )on the end). It is a pretty permanent structure already. Hopefully I can finish that by the spring, or through the spring.

Also, running. Keep on top of running. I also want to do more jump rope. And, to stay in Kung Fu shape!

That is up to the DA on the case because he's convicted of murder of 2 federal agents. And despite numerous appeals and parole hearings which continue to find him guilty as charged. The real ****ing part was his own admissions for what it's worth.

Kind of hard to carte blanche pardon that without definitive evidence that would provide someone with the ability to do so.

In all these years, how much has changed? Those agents are still dead and appeals are getting exhausted.

Obama is gone now and can't do it and somehow I doubt anyone is going to do anything more about it on that fact alone.

Anyone got any? I mean aside from "train more" because that's a no brainer.

I'm still pondering over one for this year. :o

I'm beginning to see the wisdom of this, DJ. But I still feel I should make some sort of resolution. Anything to help motivate my lazy ass. ;)

Enjoy the lazy times!
They give you nice things to think about when you're struggling with the headaches of fast living in modern society. :D

Maybe drink more coffee, get a treadmill and do the planking challenge?

My 2018 NY resolution is to read some books that not martial arts or work related (China, publishing, etc). I read a lot for this job. I seldom read for fun anymore. And I realized that last year, I didn't read a single book that was recreational. So as of last weekend, I've already cracked two new books that have nothing to do with the martial arts or work.

Similar to you, I just picked up Dune and Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy. Never read them, heard they were good.

Cool! I read those like 40 years ago and luved 'em. The mind games of Dune were great. And Hitchhikers was like Monty Python meets Sci-Fi. Both were outstanding examples of world building, long before the YA fantasy genre really emerged. Enjoy!

Good thread. Since year 2000, I have my yearly plan. The MA part of my new year plan is to train free fight, hard conditioning. So that's the same as last year plan. This thread reminds me to review if I have achieved my last year MA plan, to see if I need to change anything. And also plan the detail. I am going to do the review within January.

My resolution this year is to lose my secretary spread. More ab & core work.

My 2018 NY resolution is to read some books that not martial arts or work related (China, publishing, etc). I did manage to achieve this, but only with one book. And it took all year. :o Everything else was martial arts/China oriented.

So this year I picked up the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series to fill the time between GOT books and seasons.

I bought a three-sectional staff from MAMart and resolved to spend around 30 minutes a day using it as a daily workout device.

I haven't decided how much, but I'm going to block out a portion of time during my work day to spend on pluralsight.com to pick up new work related skills.

That's pretty much it.

(I did actually complete my last year goal of reading Dune (the first book), and the Hitchhiker's Guide series)

Annnnnnd...still not making resolutions!

lol.

1920x1080 for now though.

My life has been pretty even keeled for that last decade or two.
If I gain weight, it's maximum 5 lbs.
I don't drink, so I have nothing to give up there.
I don't eat like a jerk off, so, no worries there.
I exercise regularly, get proper sleep and try to avoid negative uptake as much as I can.

I guess, the idea of resolutions is to get to a point where you don't need to make any. :D
