Blade 2 was actually good? Seriously? I saw the first one and didn't really think that much of it. I have given Mr. Snipes three chances to show me something enjoyable that was martial arts related and at this point, I don't want to waste my money anymore. I am a Donnie fan though, so I've been torn....

i thought it was pretty cool anyway. if you're a fan of vampires and kicking ass then go see it! :D

The fight scenes were a lot more 'realistic' than the wire-fu cheese that has been around lately, so it was refreshing. A lot more 'in-yer-face', as Wesleys usual style.

Maybe I shouldn't be admitting this so freely, but I am a Buffy-holic. So yes, vampires are my cup of....blood. :D

I guess that's why I was so disappointed in the first one. It just didn't feel like they did the characters any real justice. At least to me.

I did not mean to post here, but this thread has developed its own gravity well from its sheer mass, and I was unable to break free in time.

I will let you know that next weekend I will watch The One, as I love both hsing yi and pa kua.

This does not in any way alter my resolve to destroy this thread. I have been gradually adopting Ukranian children and training them in the martial way to prepare for the day that I storm kungfuonline's offices, make my way inexorably to Kung Lek's cube, and bring my mighty hand down on the delete button that will end this once and for all!!!

But not this weekend. Cause I'm gonna watch The One.

[NOTE: I WOULD JUST LIKE TO STATE HERE THAT EVERYONE SHOULD ADOPT A UKRANIAN CHILD. THEY HARDLY TAKE ANY ROOM, ARE VERY HAPPY IF TREATED DECENTLY, AND MAKE A WONDERFUL ADDITION TO ANY MASTER PLOT AIMED TOWARDS GLOBAL DOMINATION.]

OK, I said I would give my review of The One after I watched it, and I am a man of my word...well, I'm a man. You'll just have to take my word on that.

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILER FOR THE MOVIE THE ONE UPCOMING!!!! IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW TOO MUCH ABOUT THE MOVIE THE ONE, DO NOT READ. IF YOU READ AND COMPLAIN, YOU ARE PROBABLY ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO DOESN'T HANG UP ON TELEMARKETERS INSTANTLY, AND SO I REFUSE TO FEEL PITY FOR YOU, YOUr UGLY CHILDREN, OR YOUR MOTHER/COUSIN(SAME PERSON).

Anyway, I'll start with the verdict. I liked it. I'm only telling you this first because, if you were to read my review of the beginning, you would think it was overall a horrible movie, but I'm not saying that.

I sat to watch it, thinking that the fights between Jet Li and Jet Li would suck, since no matter how good he is, he can't fight himself and have it not look stupid. However, I felt the effect was achieved well enough that I didn't stop to think about the fact that he can't be fighting himself.

OK, I've put it off long enough. I have to bring up the beginning. I believe "bring up" is the best phrase to be used when referring to the beginning of The One, as that's exactly what happens: it just comes up, like general tzo's chicken from a bolemic's gullet, and just when you think the last chunk was as bad as it gets, there's one more chickeny chunk out the glottis. First, it starts with a text blurb explaining that there's a multiverse out there, and there's a jet li for every universe in that multiverse. This section feels a little bit too TV oriented to me, but its also reminescent of the beginning of a really good comic book, so I was cool with it.

However, they unfortunately forgot to leave the rest of the beginning on the cutting room floor. "Prisonner" Li is being escorted from his cell, when someone hiding out in ductwork shoots him in the head. Not bad. Then, the police shoot a million bullets into the ductwork, and there's a little quiet. Music is blared over this scene in a clear attempt to have a soundtrack, but the music and action only manage to remind the viewer of The Black Mask, which the viewer really does not deserve. Its also very eighties in their use of the music, but that's not all.

Apparently evil Li, who is hiding out in the ductwork, is so fast, he is able to dodge all the bullets without even leaving the ductwork. Being someone who knows nothing about ductwork, I felt sorry for those who had knowledge of ductwork.

Then comes the two greatest travesties of this movie. In reverse chronological order, they are: "Surfer" Li from the d0rky universe, looking suspiciously like Jet Li in a really cheap blonde wig; and an entire fight against the police in which, instead of using Jet Li's amazing martial skills, the producers used CGI effects to make CGI Li kick his leg, jump all over the place, and in other ways move in ways far less graceful than the actual movements of Jet Li.

Another reason the producers of this movie should be shot and then sprayed with super soakers full of jabenero juice is for allowing the line "There can be only one" to be used again.

Fortunately, after the beginning, there's this decent movie that comes on, not flawless, but good enough in its strong points to soothe the wounded viewer, like a good step father after a really abusive one. Pa kua Li, who looks like Hsing Yi Li, is targetted by hsing yi li, so that hsing yi li can finally be the only jet li and no longer have to share royalties for all the Once Upon a Time In China movies. There were two cops from the mutiverse police or some such thing chasing hsing yi li, but I won't go much into them, as they weren't asian, and to me, all those non-asians look alike. Anyway, one was tanner than the other.

Needless to say, there is some confusion as to which Li is pa kua li, there's a lot of better fights than the one at the beginning, using real Jet Lis for the martial arts, and CGI to make the real jet li beetch slap people with motorcycles, which is how it should've been done in the first place. There's also those two non-asian guys I talked about before carrying these stupid looking guns that made sound effects from "V: The Final Battle", but no one was looking at them, because they weren't asian, and hey! There's Jet Li! There he is again!

Then, the two Jet Li's get in a big fight because hsing Yi Li banged pa kua li's wife or something, and its hsing yi vs. pa kua, which is cool, and they fight and fight, and they end up somewhere else, and hsing yi li tells some guy "You're my b1tch".

That being said, I give The One three out of five Jet Li's. If you liked The Black Mask, then you're a dog humping wanker, but if you like good martial arts, CGI graphics, and asian guys, especially Jet Li, then this is the movie for you..

As a warning, I must point out that this movie leaves the opening for the worst titled movie ever: The One 2.

Longest post on the thread? What have I done?:(

Actually, I like Jet Li very much, while at the same time, I am so thouroughly evil as to try to get this thread deleted for the sheer joy of it.

And, for the record DS, I have no idea what you are talking about. I believe it has to do with sports. Cricket? Rugby? Football(soccer to us barbarians)?

I'm very bummed today. There used to be a time when saying "dog humping wanker" on the forum would get a thread deleted. Doesn't "dog humping wanker" mean anything anymore?

Silumkid
05-01-2002, 10:21 AM
Well, since DS used the term "wing" I'd wager he's making a hockey reference although I do have NO IDEA at all who the Icelandic superstar is...but Pavel Bure is THE MAN! :D

KC...if your comments about the contrived soundtrack relates to the Americanized version of Black Mask, I have to agree. However, if you want to see the non-MTV re-edited/re-cut, get an import version. Some of the flashbacks are in different order and the soundtrack is barely there.

I'm also not sure what you meant by saying that they used a CGI Li in the first fight...I have the DVD and Jet was the only real person on the set for the fight in the police station. He was punching and throwing balls and sticks on strings which were "painted" over by the policemen figures. They said the scene was shown to a focus group without the CGI cops and the crowd went nuts thinking it was Evil Li's bizarre training techniques!

Also a note on the Jet vs. Jet fights...again the CGI there was minimal. Jet fought a stunt double who wore a green mask which was then CGI'ed with Jet's face. I too thought it worked rather well.

Glad that you liked it though.

DS, you really thought KOD was better? Please explain. I personally thought the dialouge seemed really forced and unnatural in KOD and Bridget, while as always was excessively pretty, also was a little melodramatic for my taste. I also felt the final fights with the twins and the head baddie were far too short and rather anti-climatic. I'm not saying I DIDN'T like KOD, I did. Just not as much as The One, maybe about the same as RMD.

Nobody?......... :D

Silumkid - Kiss of the Dragon: As much as I like the fight scenes in The One, I preferred the setting, theme and music :) to KOD. That fight in the shop with the HUGE black dude was awesome!

Yes Bridget was a little fake, and overly ****ty [for a wh*re :D] I just generally preferred it. Maybe I was just in a better mood for it, as I didn't really rate either films very highly. And yes, the final fight was a bit awfully short.

But then again I am the kind of film buff that watches Apocalypse Now for entertainment :D

Personally i didn't like KOD although the setting and atmosphere was great. I just felt that it seemed a little forced and contrived. Bridget Fonda was much better in her earlier movies imho. The fights seemed short and sharp (which is good), but there was nothing of substance if u ask me. I preferred the one because it was just more stylish and the action was better (Jet squashing a guy with 2 motorcycles for chirse sake :D).

The political thread is dead, just as I had planned.

Now, on to the crowning glory of my nefarious plan.

The destruction of this thread.

Did anyone notice in The One that there was a slightly h0m0phobic undertone at a couple points in the movie? Not anything severe, but still, a slight undertone. The topic comes up, and every time it does, the characters, NOT all villains, voice immediate dissaproval.

Is this common in Hong Kong inspired flicks, or is it more a Hollywood thing?

What is the Chinese viewpoint on h0m0sexuality? Is it similar to the way it is portrayed in the US? Are there stereotypes there as well regarding this issue, or is the Chinese culture more accepting of this?

I am not saying that Jet Li himself is in any way h0m0phobic, just saying that many movies do portray negative stereotypes on this issue, and fail to portray positive examples.

I can think of many hong kong flicks where the only g@y character is a villain's assistant, thus Diego's patented phrase "BruceLeeBadGuyG@y".

Ever seen 'Body Weapon' with chiu man cheuk and angie cheung (cheung wai yee <--- a hot gal). The movie really su(ks ass, but one of the characters that helps her is very definately h0m0sexual. I guess it is still slightly stereotyped, but not in a bad way... check it out just to see his dyed orange hair, some wong jing inspired nudity and that guy from sex and zen 2 playing a bad guy (can never remember his name)... was also in God of Gamblers 2 (as the chinese army guy) :D

Dezhen,

Never heard of that one. Is the kung fu decent?

What kind of character was it? Martial artist? Or more, the swishy friend who helps by hiding the heros, or helping them in some other, non-masculine way?

BTW, good post. Nonetheless, this thread will die. I will crush it beneath my iron boot, just as soon as I can manage to lift the **** thing. Wood is definitely a better material for clogs, but nooooo, I had to go and be all evil. My wife tried to tell me, but would I listen? Noooooo.

This is worse than that time I was trying to get my iron fist through customs. Its really hard to get people to cower and grovel at your feet when some low paid airport security guard is rattling off the contents of your suitcase, "Clothing, toothbrush, iron marital aide, self help book..."

People just don't appreciate a good mastermind of evil these days. I blame it on television.

does ur iron boot weigh 100 pounds? or your iron fist? If they both do then must be hard to take them anywhere...

The kung fu isn't too bad... ever heard of Chiu Man Cheuk? (Zhao Wen Zhao in Mandarin i think..?) he was the bad guy in Jet Li's Fong Sai Yuk, the Blade, Blacksheep Affair, played WFH in a OUATIC movie i think? etc. <--- i still managed 2 keep my post on topic!
Very kinda 'wushuey' for want of a better word. But it's still very dark in content..

u want the plot? Here it is: Cops hunting the trail of a vicious and sadistic serial skiller... don't wanna spoil it for ya. Not the greatest movie imo, but still pretty cool in mixing more kinda 'modern HK' cinema, with some decent MA.

I tell ya, its not easy being evil.

The iron boot and fist is just the beginning.

Do you know how much it costs me every time I fire off my death ray? Millions. Its a lot of work, since every time I plan to fire it off, I have to find a visually appealing hero, put his girlfriend in danger, and then place him into some weird trap so that he can escape and aim the death ray at my hidden base.

Not to mention the cost of hidden bases. Have you ever priced those things? We're talking ten million, and there's never enough bathrooms.

Then there's organizing all those underground kumites, attracting at least one australian fighter, then you have to find just the right henchmen. That's the really hard part about my job, all these qualified individuals come in, and you have to squash their dreams by saying "Oh, you're very good, but I was looking for someone with a fencing scar. I'm sorry."

Forget about hiring Bolo. He's just too expensive.

This is just part of it. It used to be that if you wanted to be an evil mastermind, all you needed was a death ray and a cat. Now none of the other evil masterminds will take you very seriously unless you have a martial arts school. Do you have any idea how hard it is to keep students when every class they have to watch their classmates spar with you until you break all their necks? Much less get them so that they will clap when its all over.

And then there's the smoking. Filthy habit. But being evil isn't just a part time thing, its a responsibility. So you go get your camel filters, and your little extension thing that makes the cigarette two feet long, in case you find you need to burn one of the giggling Evil Mastermind groupies, just to demonstrate your evil mastermindedness. It can really get you down, but you can't just slack off, I mean, you've gotta have a work ethic.

So you wanna know about some gay charactered Hong Kong movies eh? Fine, easily done....but first, can you tell me which scenes you are referring to in The One? I must not have caught those references....

So, for some movies with gay characters...

(Already mentioned) Body Weapon (BTW, Zhao Wen-Zhou was not only WFH in OUTIC 4 and 5, but was the Jet's stuntie in the first three as well, also lead baddie in Fong Sai-Yuk)

Gorgeous

Pantyhose Heroes (another Sammo Hung tour de force)

Happy Together (I have not actually seen this one but am told it centers around 2 gay men)

That oughta whet your appetite for now. :p

KC. To make life easier a Belgian [?] scientist has developed remote controlled rats. Seriously.

As the construction of my underground lair is FAR from complete, and the communication tunnels are not yet built, I find these rats very useful for crawling around taking messages. Ferrets are also possible for larger parcel-delivery.

If you want I can post a link to the page?

Injured my dub bad over the weekend. Took it to Glow Worm caves, but the map did not make out the numerous turns. Must have missed a turn near the caves, ended up on a 4wd track. Scared to death. about 20 kms into the bushes, no signal, and being the wrong track, no one went passed. The part was rubbing against the belt making screeching sounds and engine was threatening to stall.

Anyway long story short, tore up the bottom of the compartments to free the jam, part to replace approximately 300 bucks. Need to replace air filter, getting spare today/tomorrow.

Me thinks your WRX will fair better on the dirt, mine's a strictly autobahn car from now on. Unless I get coilovers and raise the car a few inches before the dirt road, it's a no go zone. But coilovers are like over 2 gran for a decent one, and difficult to find in Sydney.

Since your Scooby is rally bred, I'd be very angry  if you stood only on tarmac ! lol ;) :D

Geez, 42 pages worth of this? And about half of what i've seen isn't even about Li. All i've been able to gather is that this entire thread is built around a girl named Tai Li and its like her own little chat room where she has a bunch of dudes wrapped around her finger.:D And they mention Jet Li sometimes. Oh well to each their own i suppose. I did have one constructive comment I guess.

Earlier in this thread (don't ask me where) someone recommended Dragons of the Orient to view. Well, I own that title and its all flashy acrobatic type wushu. Plus they speed up and slow down the sequences. Why oh why must they speed it up and slow it down? How you ask? Well generally all the weapons are sped up, whereas all the acrobatic corkscrew type stuff is slowed down. If you must have this title because of the Jet Li sequences, get Shaolin Kung Fu instead. This has the same early (and recycled) Jet Li footage including the painful scene with his mother and the cake (shudder) and fights from some of his movies in it, but it also shows some of the cool shaolin practices like iron skull skill and others. Well, enjoy yourselves Li fans.
Gabriel

prana

Gabriel

Because its hard to see real internal Kung Fu on the outside.

So acrobatic wushu was developed as a sport/exhibitionist style.

I mean, it be pretty boring to see a bald guy dressed in a robe, saying "Omitofo" to an enemy and then walks away. Or perhaps, a one punch kill and no blood, puffing, bruised action.

You'd much rather see some guys get beaten half to a pulp to revenge his sifu and his dead wife, train in deadly triple sommersault into the splits, round the house flips to a butterfly spin with scissor kicks and defeats the evil man with poison finger.

Even better, throw in the word "Buddha Palm" and the audience drops their jaw ! OMG it's "Fut Sao" !

The movies he made in the United States are so ridiculous, it hurts my head. geez! the one was so crappy. let me count the waves. He'd better start making good movies or else the people of this thread are going to be the only ones in the United States who KNEW who jet li was.

dezhen2001
05-10-2002, 01:54 AM
i kinda agree with what u r saying fgxpanzerz. None of his more recent movies compare to his old HK movies like OUATIC or FOL etc. I guess you can say the same with most movie people - they all have a 'golden era' (many ppls favourite jackie Chan era was late 80's-early 90's. What he does now just can't compare to that). Robert De Niro, Tom Cruise just about anyone you can name all had their 'time' and now there are others who have become popular.

I too wish that Jet, Jackie and the other HK ppl who have 'relocated' to the USA would make movies with content like they did before. But would it sell in the mainstream box office? I mean in the mainstream US box ofice how many ppl are actually martial artists? or are even interested in seeing different 'styles' fighting each other? Most people who watch action movies just wanna see ppl get thei @ss kicked and sh!t blown up! Not little details like xing yi vs. bagua for example.

Even Jet's more recent HK movies were much better: Hitman for example has so much decent action, and was pretty well acted as well imo. Maybe he should od like Jackie does and make one 'US market' movie and one 'Real Fan market' movie lol

Prana: i would like to see that :D ever seen a movie called 'american shaolin'? The Sifu there gets in to trouble protecting his students and DOES say that, then proceeds to tie up 3 or 4 men with his beads, using Kum na :D

Oh and Gabriel: Tae Li having us wrapped around her lil finger - not on ur life :p

Finally....the KID...HAS COME BACK....to the Jet Li thread!!!!

I take a couple days off and what happens? "Jet sucks." Seriously, is that the best you can come up with? I was hoping for a challenge but all I see is tired old grade-school opinion slings. Poor...you get an 'F' for effort and an 'F minus' for content. That oughta make your day.

dezhen (David),

The "Dave" stuff was actually from "2001 A Space Odyssey". I 'spaced' out on the fact that you were a Dave too. :D

OK, so what I heard about the Matrix sequels was this: Jet did indeed turn them down supposedly over a bad contract deal. If I remember my Jet gossip correctly, he gets around 5 million per movie or so and the Wachowski (sp?) brothers offered him 3 million for BOTH Matrix sequels! That's right, not apiece....BOTH! If this was indeed the case, Jet made a wise decision turning it down. You would never see any other actor take such a pay cut to be in an over-hyped sequel, so why should Jet?

Tae,

Kylie...as in Minogue? :D Hey, fine with me....I think she's pretty hot. I'd throw a banging at her. Make her listen to her own silly CD's while I'm doing it, too. Evil I tell you! EVIL!!

Uh oh...the Adrienne Barbeau-bots are getting restless...

dezhen2001
05-11-2002, 02:46 AM
Silumkid: i thought it was form there but wasn't sure :D

$3 mill for 2 movies? No way man! Tom Cruise etc. get in excess of $10 million PER MOVIE! Well, i'm glad he turned them down then - it's their loss if u ask me. Maybe that's why he did the One as a kinda retribution :p

Guess what - i FINALLY saw Bodyguard from Beijing last nite! Except it was the English dubbed version known as 'the Defender'. Looked like a good movie, but the dubbing and editing on this version sucked :( Some real good action in there though. Hopefully someone like Hong Kong Legends here in the UK will release it properly. U ever seen their website? They have a NICE collection of remastered, original language HK action movies...
http://www.hongkonglegends.co.uk/index.html if u wanna take a look :) as i'm sure someone with the means as yourself has a method of viewing UK DVD's etc ;)

I AM a BAAAAAD man! I'm so bad, I make medicine sick! I'm so bad, I should be in detention! I'm so bad I can slap a tornado down and dry up a sea! OK, so now I'm just reaching....

Ah yes, the *******ized Americanized versions of Jet movies. I'm sorry you had to go through that. I myself had that problem once with an American release of Fist of Legend. About 10 minutes of the movie was removed and the dialouge was re-dubbed so badly it changed the entire movie. I promptly sold it and got an import off of E-Bay.

However, I have good news! There are original versions of Bodyguard from Beijing available. It's from a company called World Video and the cover is very plain...just Jet and Christy on the cover with "A Jet Li movie...Bodyguard from Beijing" on it with a blue background. That's the copy to get if you can. If not, I can. We can talk if you are interested. =)

Speaking of DVD's by the way, just got Donnie Yen's Fist of Fury (his A-TV show condensed into a 2 hour movie), The Warriors (YES!), and The Assassin, and Ali. Hooo-hah! =)

Movies rule, especially if they have Jet in them!

i would be interested, but unfortunately, no DVD player, or region hacker :(
Luckily i didn't BUY the video, only borrowed it form a mate. So good to watch but of course i will but the original language version :)

I saw a few of the Donnie Yen series from mates who had recorded it. pretty cool hehe.

You'll just have to see my posts at jetliandfarmpornsexualdeviants.orgcom to see my thoughts on that. I'm not just a deviant....I'm the founder!

dez,

Hopefully the whole series is better than the 2-hour DVD I have. I was not impressed...I suppose there will be a lot lost when you try to condense 28 episodes into 2 hours, but the cinematography I saw on this DVD was pretty poor. It wasn't the worst thing I've ever seen, just not very good either. I expected a lot more from the Donnie-Man, especially since his movies are pretty decent. Makes me wonder if Codename: Puma is even worth trying to get a hold of now. Ever seen any of that series?

On a Jet Li related note, I'm not impressed with the "Hero" pics they have up right now either. At least one movie still is all I ask. If I wanted the behind-the-scenes crap, I'll buy the DVD (which you know I will but I want previews, DA@#%^%$IT!!!!!!)

Tae Li

hear ya Silum...but lets not get all cranky at Hero before we actually see what it has to offer, im really hoping its a similar 'genre' or 'context' to Fist Of Legend, only better!

Im glad that Jet turned down the Matrix, I dont think he would have suited that role anyway, I mean Jet Is The Man, NOT the follow up to Keanu Reeves (who is a cutie) bodgy fight scenes.

Dez> BodyGaurd From Beijing is one of my fav's! but I havent seen the dubbed version and DONT WANT TO! but I think theres more gun scenes in it then actual fight scenes, its like a Chinese/Hollywood blockbuster, but bit old now.....

And Kris....your darn right I have a right to think about my man the Jetster, but comeon, if Silum and Dez and all the others want to have a bit a perv, why not let them???? hehehe

come on Kris, admit it, youve had thoughts about Jet as well havent you???lol:p

I want to understand why some people have only recently seen The One in the movies???? Its in the video store in Aust. now....hmmmm.

Anyways, thats an update from me (your hostess).....be happy.
PLus ive replaced Jets quote at the end of my posts with my own...its based on the notion of fear, just general fear, not neccesarily only tied with fighting in Martial Arts...so what do you think?

Peace.

well Tae, in some places, the One is still in cinemas over here... i think u can buy it on DVD now as well, but not video or rental yet.

BFB: it was made around 5+ years ago now though, so i think a lot has copied that kinda style recently. Also i think the US ma/action scene is still around that level - nothing new imo.

What did u guys think of Blade 2? I thought it was ok but it was quite easy to spot when the people were done on computer or stunt doubled. At least in the police parking lot scene in the One it was difficult to tell with the cops frozen in mid air...
The action made a change form all this traditional Kung Fu inspired crud that's been on our screens recently. I mean Steven Seagal being wired to do a capoeirs/Wushu kick in Exit Wounds - what's the world coming 2!!?? His aikido could easily have dealt with what happened there, and still looked cool.

Hero - i agree about the pics, but hopefully there will be some good ones soon :)

Silum: haven't really seen much of those TV series to be honest. Difficult to find in the UK... Can't really make any comment on them. The ones i saw looked like ur standard TV level of cinematography though, so maybe the movie version was pretty bad? Codename: Puma - i heard the name around but not much else...

Tae,

I was wondering where you had got to! ;)

dez,

Haven't seen Blade 2 yet (still, lame I know)...will also never see another Seagal movie. You hear me!?! NEVER!!! :D

Also, let's get it straight....I am by no means cranky at "Hero". How can I be? BUT...I can say at least a couple of costume shots or something would be nice. I really don't care about what the director or the cinematographer look like. They aren't in the movie! I suppose there may be some who appreciate all that but not me. If I want to know, I get the behind-the-scenes stuff from other sources. They need to be hyping this movie if they want it to be a success and showing us how "Ralph the make-up guy" cleans his brushes ain't gonna do it.

So there is my rant.

dezhen2001
05-15-2002, 12:47 AM
Silumkid: Seagal is ok. I used to train Aikido so can see the skill he has... that's the only reason i watch his movies (but his old ones - none of the hippie/new age crap he does now :D)

I'm sure we'll see pics of the cast and scene shots etc. nearer the time it's gonna get released ;)

Blade 2 is pretty good action wise, but the plot is not so good. I like seeing Wesley fight with his JKD/Aiki Jujitsu style. Pretty powerful and dynamic without all this wired flying crap :)

i haven't read most of these posts, but i'll throw out this info cause i think you'd be interested Tae Li. If you can ever get your hands on a DVD called "Dragons of the Orient", you can get some video of Jet training in his early years(and sometimes very early years). The whole movie is like a documentary/promotional piece on kung fu, it's kinda old, but it has all kinds of demonstrations, and a good amount on Jet Li training as a kid in China, and it's pretty darn impressive. i rented it off Netflix.com a little while ago.

yeah kc..its sort of centered around a chinese april oneil type going around doing a story on different kinds of kung fu, and she picks up that guy along the way, after attacking him. But its a weak story at best. Mostly documentary type stuff...oh, and acrobatic type wushu. And the famed Jet li and his mother cake scene!:D However, if you were to get one of these titles :Dragons, This is Kung Fu, or Shaolin Kung Fu, they all have practically the same Jet Li scenes, which is why I commented on them being recycled earlier.

Prana- :D lol..yeah, the average movie goer wouldn't find internal kung fu very exciting to watch, i suppose, but, what average movie goer watches Dragons of the Orient?

dezhen- there were no classes that day and I was pretty bored, but, in my defense, I didn't read the whole thing only about 3/4 ;)

Jet Li is cool. I like OUTIC 1 and 2 and The Legend, and Swordsman...mostly the period stuff. Don't really like anything else of his except Fist of Legend...that was good too.

Gabriel: still tho - 3/4 is no mean task! Finger pushups - i train that alot when i'm training hard qigong, but we also have an exercise to get the circulation going again afterwards ;)

I like his 'period' pieces also, but some of his more modern stuff is really cool. Hitman for example, and Bodyguard form Beijing... if u haven't seen them then i would say those are worth watching.

I'm sure they could make a new release with some new Jet stuff in it? Even if it was previously unseen stuff, or just clips from movies it would be cool. I used to have a clip i found online of Jet on a documentary when he first 'came west'. Demonstrated some pretty cool stuff. I can try and find it if anyones interested?

Any more Hero news? Whenz it gonna be released? hehe :)

Has anyone seen 2000AD? It's got Aaron Kwok and Phylis Quek in it (also an appearance by Kenneth Lo who is one of the best bad guys imo). Tae - if you haven't seen any Aaron Kwok then u should - most Asian gals i know think he's a GOD! :D

errrrrr, Gabriel, yes your information is certainly outdated, the bit about boiling water...at one stage Sydney water was tested and results found that it actually contained two types of parasites...so we were all strongly advised to stop drinking tap water, and I mean really STOP, and either boil our water or bu bottled water as a second option.

But that problem was a while ago now and has long been solved, thankgoodness! So we DO have hot water, and when we did have to boil it, it was cos of water contamination, not cos we didnt have hot water...thats a funny one actually.:D

Not allowed to raise the heat past 60degrees a governemnt regulation? what the? I know that in summer, when the weather gets really really hot, you can be finned for having a barbeque, from fear of starting a fire, and when its realllly hot, your not allowed to waste your water for no good reason, cos if bush in rural areas (im closer to the city, so dont have to worry so much) the fire department need all the water they can get their hands on....so yeah.

Anything else i can assist u with Gab???:D Any questions about my man Jet? lol

Well..here goes.. first Jet Li's sign the Rabbit

Timid and attractive, the Rabbits of the Chinese Zodiac tend to act more like bunnies, whether they like it or not! This Sign is extremely popular and has a wide circle of family and friends. Its compassionate nature leads it to be very protective of those it holds dear, but where romance is concerned, the Rabbit's sentimentality can lead it to idealize relationships. The sweet, sensitive Rabbit often ends up giving more of itself to a partner than is realistic or healthy. The good news is, when this Sign goes off-balance, the Rabbit's core group of friends and its stable home life help bring it back to center.

The Rabbit is a rather delicate Sign that needs a solid base in order to thrive. Lacking close, supportive friends and family, the Rabbit might just break down in tears at the first sign of conflict. Emotional upsets in this Sign's life can even lead to physical illnesses. Rabbits dislike arguments and other conflict and will try anything to avoid a fight; this results in something of a pushover nature. Rabbits can also lapse into pessimism and may seem stuck in life -- often to mask their insecure natures. Rabbits tend to move through life's lessons at their own, rather contemplative pace; it's a waste of time to become exasperated with this Sign's seeming disinterest in facing its problems and conquering them.

With the right partner -- meaning someone whose high principles won't allow it to take advantage of this sensitive, giving Sign -- the Rabbit can make an incredibly loving and protective partner or family member. Rabbits love to entertain at home and always make sure their house is comfortable and tastefully-furnished. What Rabbits need most is a stronger sense of self-worth and the security that comes with it. Their discerning natures, coupled with some hard-won assertiveness, will help these happy creatures go far.

there are three signs that best fit the rabbit.

The Rabbit and the Pig can make a great and mutually satisfying connection, especially if they're friends, lovers or members of the same family. The Pig derives great pleasure from offering its loved ones help, affection and protection. The emotional Rabbit relies on friends and family for support, without which it has trouble maintaining equilibrium. These two qualities are highly complementary, and these two Signs are likely to make one another feel very well-loved and -cared for.

Other qualities are also working in their favor, be their relationship amorous or platonic. The Pig has an amiable, generous nature that tends to see only the best in others, while the Rabbit possesses great powers of compassion and perception. Both Signs can forgive almost any fault -- and with one another, the faults to forgive are few. The Rabbit's weaknesses, such as timidity, passivity and subjectivity, tend to come into play only when this Sign interacts with other, more overbearing Signs, but the honorable Pig isn't likely to override the Rabbit on any level. The Pig's weaknesses are generally the result of its sensual, loving nature; this Sign knows how to work hard when it cares about the results and can be a fearsome force when need be. The Rabbit will feel very well protected by the Pig and will offer its loyalty and sweet affection in return.

As lovers, these two could have quite a steamy connection; the Pig is an out-and-out sensualist and the Rabbit's timidity belies a truly passionate nature. If in business together, the Pig may act as front person, being more socially gregarious and at ease than the Rabbit; however, the Pig's good manners would never let it presume it had the upper hand in the business. This Sign will always listen to the Rabbit's ideas and will likely find them to be uniquely innovative.

and...number 2!

The Rabbit and the Goat can make a great, long-lasting connection! These two Signs share several similarities and their differences are likely to be complementary. Both are dreamy, artistic souls who rely more on emotion and intuition than on logic to navigate through the world. Both Signs also need plenty of support from loved ones, so if theirs is a romantic relationship, they can likely make one another feel very well-loved and appreciated. The Rabbit can be easily taken advantage of by other Signs due to its passive, compassionate nature, but this won't be much of a problem with the Goat; there's far more room for give-and-take here than in other pairings with the Rabbit.

The only problem that may arise for these two in love is their mutual potential for emotional instability. Both these Signs can become high-strung and pessimistic when life becomes too overwhelming; during these times they can either help one another or feed off one another's anxieties. The Rabbit's powers of compassionate perception will likely help a lot, however. If these two live together their home is likely to be very comfortable and artistically decorated, due to their artistic sensibilities and the Goat's esoteric tastes.

As business partners, these two will do best in a business that highlights their creativity, and they may need to bring in a third party to handle the finances. Neither of these Signs has much of a head for practicalities; they're both just too interested in other things, such as artistic aesthetics, undercurrents of emotion and meaning and so on. The Rabbit, especially, has trouble keeping up with mundane responsibilities, so either the Goat will have to take over that part of the business or utilize an outside source. The Goat may also end up being the front person, due to its more socially outgoing nature and its innate need to be in control.

and..number 3

As they're both timid, sweet and compassionate, two Rabbits together could be a match made in heaven -- but any relationship needs to be grounded on Earth once in a while! Life for the Rabbit is a highly subjective affair; this Sign is deeply emotional, idealistic and artistic, with great potential for insecurity. Two Rabbits together feed off one another's emotions, including pessimism and anxiety; the balance in this relationship may be delicate, easily upset.

If these two are amorous, their relationship is likely to be very loving. This Sign tends to idealize relationships, a quality that can be a problem for other Signs but, Rabbit to Rabbit, only serves to heighten the sweetness and emotional intensity of the affair. As Rabbits need lots of support and encouragement from loved ones in order to maintain equilibrium, two together must take care not to bring one another down when anxiety sets in. If these two live together, their home is likely to be quite lovely and comfortable. Rabbits are artistically inclined and love to entertain their friends and families at home; dinner parties will be candlelit, with soft music playing in the background to add to the mood.

As business partners, the same dynamics apply. Their office will be tastefully, artistically decorated and will likely resemble a home much more than a workspace; it also may be a bit cluttered, as Rabbits place more importance on following their artistic muse than on cleaning and keeping things neat. Creative ideas will abound in a company headed by two Rabbits, but they will need to make doubly sure that the practical side of the business -- paying bills, keeping track of finances -- is in good hands (perhaps not their own!).

and finally...Jet's element..which is sort of interesting

Those of you born under the influence of the Chinese Astrology Element of Water act with the assured fluidity of a river, affecting your environment with your strength and quiet charm. Creative and captivating, diplomatic and intuitive, Water individuals are the masters of subtle persuasion. Without even appearing to try, you can gain someone's trust and affection, and once you've got them they'll follow you anywhere. You make everyone feel special, noting and praising each person's unique talents.

Your inherent pliability, the fluid calm that makes you so appealing, can also make you sometimes too passive, too willing to be what someone wants you to be. You tend to take the shape of whatever container you're poured into.Rather than letting others dam up your energies, let yourself flow freely!

phew....im done with horoscopes for today. :D

Well, now you can call Jet your little rabbit Tae Li!;)

anyway, to tie back into this thread, has anyone seen Jet's movie OUTIC and America? I've seen I,II,and III and thats it. The impression that I get is that the story is weaker. He's an indian or something right. Something about losing his memory. Sounds like a painful repeat of Shanghai Noon to me. Comments anyone? Peace.

Gabriel: :D Shanghai Noon is only a couple a years old. OUATIC and America is at least 5 (i forget the date). The story is way different if u ask me - both set around the time of the Railroads etc. but still different. It's worth watching imo. Try before you Buy though :D Another good movie set in that era is 'A Man Called Hero' with Ekin Cheng in it.

Also: i don't think Tae Li minds is she's 'compatible' with Jet or not!

I reckon OUATIC and America was bad, in fact one of Jet's worst movies. Oh wait, does he have bad movies?! Gotta admit that his bad movies include this and Dr. Wai in the Scripture With No Words.

On the other hand, although I'm not a Hollywood fan, I enjoyed Shanghai Noon quite much. It seems to me like Jackie Chan brings "that something" to Hollywood cinema which makes them great to watch.

dezhen2001
05-20-2002, 04:07 AM
Well.... so much for me studying :p

The scripture with no words was just plain freaky :D It had some good fight scenes in it imo of course. I actually thought it was pretty good. The version i saw had real bad subtitles though, which were hard to read.

OUATIC and America was probably one of the worst in the series of course. The series was a bit drawn out! :p But i still rated it...

Jackies movies all have a different kind of charisma to them, and the comedy is usually superb. I'm more of a Jackie fan than Jet actually, but theres room in my video collection for them both

Well, being a film collector is money-consuming! However, once my Li Lian Jie DVD Collection™ is complete (which is quite soon), I will most likely start my Sing Lung DVD Collection™ project. Jackie Chan simply has so many movies, that it's better to collect Jet Li's movies first and what's more Jet is my number one idol!

dezhen2001
05-20-2002, 04:23 AM
lol Sho - liked the 'TM' :D

Yeah, i know what u mean about film collecting etc. Right now i have around 35/40 JC movies... most are his older ones but are still cool. It's amazing to see how his style has changed as not only has he got older, but also from HK to the US. I prefer his mid 80's/early 90's era myself, but i think it was too punishing on his body.
Jet i have only recently started collecting. Also other movies with Aaron Kwok, Chiu Man Cheuk, Ekin Cheng etc. theres a lot of variety out there and that's what makes HK movies so great :)

But i feel so left out, don't have a dvd player, so it's all video :(

david

Sho
05-20-2002, 04:44 AM
Yup, Jackie has done some nasty stuff to his body, poor baby. But that is one way he has gained his fame. I don't have a specifically favourite time period, but I think he was best during late 70's through 80's (within HK). However, somehow I don't like his early Hollywood films.

dezhen2001
05-20-2002, 04:52 AM
yup the Protector did kinda suck... did you see the 'HK-ized' version that had the end fight scene re-shot? It was much better. Battlecreek Brawl kinda sucked as well, but was funny.

Anyway, better get back on topic before we get told off ;)

How do you all think Jet's 'Hollywood' movies have compared to his HK ones? Not neccessarily just MA wise, but i mean in general...? I really liked the cinematography in OUATIC, thought it was really beautiful (kinda like Jacies saving grace 'Miracles')...

david

Sho
05-20-2002, 05:41 AM
Nah, haven't seen that one, but I can imagine. :)

I think Tai-Chi Master and The Evil Cult have great cinematography imho, not to mention OUATIC. Jet's Hollywood movies are of course more popular amongst the American people or basically the westerners. In my opinion Jet played a cool role in Lethal Weapon 4, although a villain. RMD was also a bright and happy movie, which made Jet even more famous to the west (it wasn't a bad movie at all). Though his last two movies, KOTD and The One were weird and not Jet-style.

If you watch Jackie Chan's My Stunts, Jackie himself explains some brief facts about Hong Kong cinema compared to Hollywood and how effects are made the old-fashioned way. Although Jackie talks with a tone that Hollywood special computer effects are great and superb, I personally think that the oldskool HK way is more beautiful (and also reckon that Jackie himself thinks so too, but not in front of the camera). I mean it is easy to make a guy fly through a wall or other crazy things using modern computer technology, but in HK movies you know that it's the real stuff. This makes HK film industry more enjoyable for the audience and also makes the films more fun to make, because the creativity is so deep and fascinating.

Actually, i agree with what you've said. But of course there are lots of other things to worry about when doing stunts: what happens if the person gets injured? (loss of schedule, production time etc.), if it goes wrong you have to set it all up again... using CG you can plan it to perfection :) Again, the time it takes is probably balanced out, but i dunno?

I reckon Jackie would still do the physical things as much as he can, but also use the CG to make it look even more spectacular. My Stunts is a great video imo, shame there wasn't more depth!

The only thing i disagree with is that u said it's 'more enjoyable' for the viewer if it's all done real. Most viewers really don't care imo just want spectacle and entertainment. But when u get 'specialist' like we are, THEN it's more enjoyable!

Well not only the real stunts, but everything in a movie. For example jumps and flying, as they are performed using wires and NOT computer generation.

You might be right on the fact that movies "are more enjoyable when it's real", too biased information. ;)

dezhen2001
05-20-2002, 06:10 AM
Well, wiring still isn't 'real' though, is it :) It's actually quite interesting imo (how sad am i) that i can sometimes see when people use wires in their movies, but others i can't. I like the 'my stunts' example, when u don't really notice it's been used... that's how it should be done imo. Have you seen Project A 2? Or police story etc.? Jackie just climbs up stuff - i've never seen anyone else that can do that like him (apart from some mad ass french dudes)...

anyway - tae li will kill us if we don't talk about jet li sometime :p
But i do agree that his US movies seem very 'un-Jet' like, compared to the others we've all seen.

Yeah, well I'm mainly trying to point out computer enhancement. Wire-use is not real, but the actors are really in the air (although connected to a rope). :D

I agree. Let's stick to Jet here. Sorry Tae Li. ;)

okay, so see OUATIC and America before I buy it. Problem with that is only my local suncoast store has it and none of those rental places do. So, Ill probably end up buying it. Oh well, its probably not that bad. Interesting to know that OUATIC and America came out before Shanghai Noon. More useless info for me to file in my head, I suppose ;) I did think Shanghai Noon was funny if anything else..what was that drinking game they were playing in the bathtub? lol

Well Dezzy my man, I know Tae probably doesn't care if she isn't one of those signs, but I'm sure that if she is one of those signs, it'll give her another reason to justify being with Jet Li :D See?
its a win/break-even situation.

Well guys, I read your discussion about wire and cg. And honestly, I prefer wire much much more. I don't care how advanced the technology gets, it always looks fake to me. (not that the wire stuff is real but for some reason imho, it is more aesthetically pleasing to watch)

I saw Miracles on the action channel. I love that channel, they play HK cinema sometimes. Anyway, I liked the movie, even though I don't usually go for romantic story type stuff. The girl in it was adorable and fit her part perfectly. Just don't listen to the dubbed version..the dubbed voice for the girl is so manly, doesn't fit at all. Maybe I liked the movie because it had a lighter tone to it. And I liked the honor and gentlemanly conduct during the fight.

Would you believe I've never seen Tai Chi Master or Shaolin Temple? Ill probably buy them from Suncoast, I always hear such great things about those two films.

One film I saw recently that I was dissapointed in was the Legend of the Red Dragon with Jet Li. I won't go into too much detail why I was dissapointed, but in the end, Jet kicks the bad guy (who is a zombie-like guy or something), against gravity for about 40 feet as he climbs a rope backwards and eventually kicks the guy through a clock into a big vat of.....goo, or acid, or wax or something. Weird man. And zombie guy had an Armadillo Tank and....lol..ill stop :D I like Jet, but this movie was beneath him imho.

Whats the Evil Cult? Never heard of that one.

Well I hope you guys can navigate through all those disjointed thoughts. I should go study.

Gabriel: Miracles is one of my favs actually :) The fight scenes in the restaurant and the factory are great. Anita Mui is also in Rumble in the Bronx and has got a pretty good career as a singer/actress going in HK.

Evil Cult= Kung Fu Cult Master as far as i know... Jet plays Zhang San Feng's (creator of Taijiquan) grandson. It's pretty good if it's the subbed/original version.

Actually i agree, i like wire work more than CG stuff, but what i was trying to say is that there are times and places for both. A lot of the time both are used at the same time anyway (New adventures of superman when he flies, Stormriders when they fly/jump around for example <--- if u haven't seen THAT then check it out, an amazing kung fu/fantasy movie).

Legend of the Red Dragon: never heard of it but it sounds freaky! I may just have to find it to see what the heck u were on about! lol

As far as I know, Jet was Zhang San Feng's diciple's son, Mo-Kei. Therefore San Feng was Mo-Kei's sigung.

People people people....Legend of Red Dragon is yet another re-dubbed, *******ized version of a Jet movie called New Legend of Shaolin. Sounds more familiar now, yes?

I actually kinda dig New Legend....I agree the "final blow" was kinda silly but overall I think NLOS is a cool flick. For those of you who haven't seen it, Jet plays Hung See-Kwan. It's definitely worth seeing, if you can get a non-dubbed ruined version. I'd be willing to bet that the version "Red Dragon" has scenes cut out too.

My stance on wires, CGI, effects....Personally I don't care. I go to the movies to be entertained, not to see "reality". If I wanted that, I'd save the money and go sit on the corner. If it's a good movie, it's a good movie. Wires, CGI, they each have their problems...wires look funny sometimes, CGI just looks darn clunky and poor sometimes....but if it is a good movie otherwise, I could really care less.

My opinion on CGI and wires is basically the same. As long as they are used well i don't care, but when either of them are used atthe wrong time, or badly it sux. Also i like movies when people have real MA skill instead of the 5 week trained wushu bs. just my personal preference of course ;)

A movie I did see recently which I liked was Twin Warriors with Jet Li. Kung Fu brothers of near- equal skill. Cool kung Fu chicks. Crazy fight scenes :D Like the human wall with staffs all twanging back and forth. A terrible betrayal! Jet Li going crazy was kinda funny too. The secret of Tai Chi revealed. Definately good. Highly entertaining. :)

Also saw black mask. It was pretty good. I feel the english dubbing really chopped it up though.

Thats it from me sportsfans. I just decided to bring this thread back from page 5.

Gabriel: U mean Tai Chi Master? With Michelle Yeoh in it also? Yet plays Zhan San Feng (the legendary creator of Taijiquan). I like the start when him and his Shaolin brother are chatting and absent mindedly smashing bricks off their head :D Wanna be able to do that someday :D Some good Wushu in the movie. The taiji school scene is a bit Whack though - i think Jet is doing Chen or something that's meant to look like it??) while all the guys in the background are doing Yang or something... all out of sink (sp?) with him :D

Black Mask: you NEED to see the subbed version! It makes SO MUCH difference imo. Francoise Yip (Yip Fong Wah) is very good in it ;) (she was also in Rumble in the Bronx btw). Whatever happened to her...

In Twin Warriors, Jet Li's "Tai Chi" is actually Piguazhang.

That's no surprise. Jet Li's wushu coach was originally a closed door disciple of traditional Piguazhang.

A lot of people here think they can take Jet Li in a fight, but they're sadly mistaken.

As I said before, I'd take Jet Li against just about ANYBODY (including today's fighting champions) in an all out streetfight. He's virtually impossible to catch, and he's far stronger and deadlier than people realize. If he wants to get away (the best way of "winning" a streetfight), nobody is going to stop him from doing so. And if he wants to pluck out an eyeball, very few people will stop him from doing THAT. I'll bet he's a very slippery and dangerous groundfighter too.

Jet Li has more training than people realizes. Likely he's well versed in a wide array of traditional Chinese arts, including Baji and Mizhong. He is seen on the "Hai Deng" video getting coached by Li Zhi Min, Wu Tunan, Sun Jianyun, and some other old masters.

The level of coordination, the amount of breath control, the clarity of his movements, the quickness of his limbs and reflexes, the innate and inborn strength - those are all Jet Li traits that would serve him very well in a combat scenario.

Huang, Ewallace and RubTheBud. ..... you are my new hero's:D

May 24th was the latest Jet Propulsion that i recieved, and they are coming to an end in production for Cradle to the Grave, shot in LA....apparently there is a tremendous over the top action sequence at the end of the film. It involves alot of explosions, automatic weapon fire, jumpi8ng, kicking, punching, sweating..;) ..anyways and Jet has a funky haircut in it!!!!!! ahhhhh. Its hard core fighting.

One of the fighters almost crashed into Jet, but he was too quick for them...hehehehe

A 10second fight needed about 6 pr seven cameras to get the best angles, so we will just have to wait and see.

Plus I am seriouslly going to scream.....Where in God's name is HERO??? taking their time....

I CANNOT believe that Chris Tucker and Jacki Chan got best Fight Scene Award at the MTV movie awards! wtf is that? Jet Li versus Himself in The One didnt get it, I was sooooooo p!ssed off! What a joke, I mean that is A FIGHT scene, not Tucjer and Chan in their underwear jumping around!

Thanks Tae Li!

What is your ethnicity by the way, Tae Li sounds kinda korean...

Anyway, don't know if this was covered in the 40 pages that I had to skip, but do people like seeing kung fu set to rock music? Or techno? I can see the reasoning behind it, but for example the music at the end of The One is quite distracting for me, I don't think you need upbeat loud thrashing music for a fight that is actually a very sophisticated (if age old) concept match.

How good is the signature tune used in the Once Upon a Time series? Yet it's soft and rousing without being distracting.

Just my opinion....

kieofwoo: I agree with what you say. Sometimes the musical score in movies really distracts form the visual masterpiece that is MA choreography :) The Wong Fei Hung tune (i ALWAYS forget the real name :D) is very powerful. Then again, most of the movies Jet and others have done recently have been more for a general Action audience. So i guess they will use music that is popular and that most people can relate to. This brings in viewers and also sales of the soundtrack... it's all about the presidents ;)

For example: on the Rush Hour soundtrack, there are things by the Wutang Clan. Jackie doesn't like the profanity and general message in those kinda groups lyrics, as he's seen a role model to many young kids (so wants to convey the right message). Yet they are still there...? Has to be popular culture. Anyway i like the Wu, so that was great for me! :D

OUTIC music (theme) if I remember right is "The General's Mandate". Also, interesting fact about that film....listen to the soundtrack closely and you will catch 5 (count them, FIVE) different versions of General's Mandate in the movie.

I thought the soundtrack to The One was pure excellence. I, for one, am getting a little tired of the whole "chinese martial art must have chinese music" idea. But also, many times the actors (such as Jackie in RH2) don't have ANY say over what goes on the soundtrack. That's usually the marketing and art departments. "WuTang Clan coming at ya....watch ya step, kid....ya best protect ya neck!" However, on the other vein, I am also already tired of the gross over-urbanization of kungfu films. Maybe someday, some smart guy or team of folks will figure out that right balance.

But anyway, music sets the mood. Have you ever tried watching a movie that has a bad soundtrack, or one that just doesn't fit? It about as fun as pulling your own teeth with pliers doused in kerosine.

I just watched "The One".

That movie was so terribly acted that it was actually enjoyable. By the end of the movie, I was laughing so hard because it was so funny. The "I'm nobody's b1tch" was as good as "I'll be back" or "Go ahead, make my day"!

My student (who watched this film with me) and I also were laughing at how Jet Li never exudes a shred of romantic interest in the females in his movies. We just found it so funny that instead of kissing his "wife" (and a HOTTIE she was), he gave her a fake hug. Because my student and I are both Chinese and have some of that upbringing, we both just started laughing at Li's false romanticism.

The Hsing Yi used was typical wushu influenced "traditional" Hsing Yi but with Jet Li level reflexes. The Bagua in the movie had a high reverse hand and upturned palm (Cheng Ting Hua lineage, maybe Li Zhi Min was the reason for the high reverse hand?)

Li has good internal power, but not as much as he COULD have. The way he holds his postures indicates that he has more of that wushu/Changquan type jing than a true internal method. He looked a lot more convincing in "Twin Warriors" doing his native piguazhang style.

The two styles were an interesting contrast, and it was clear Jet Li was holding back against the double.

Tae Li
06-30-2002, 02:21 AM
wow, great analysis. Interesting points, but I dont think I would have noticed that he indicates more wushu stances than an internal knowlegde.

Tae Li;)

HuangKaiVun
07-01-2002, 03:30 AM
Look at his breath control and limb placement, Tae Li.

In REAL Hsing Yi and bagua, the postures are much more power oriented. The main reason for this is that they do "ban zhuang" - testing their strikes via pushing on them against walls and people. That kind of training deepens stances, straightens spines, and closes limbs.

If Jet Li did more two-man internal power training, his breath control would be more abdominal and focused. Once again, that's the result of ban zhuang.

Try pushing a fist against a wall - you'll feel what I'm talking about.

TaoBoy

Aw c'mon....

Fair enough "The One" isn't gonna win an Oscar - but the movie on a whole was pretty good. The initial fight/sfx scene was great. A nice new slant on an old theme. And "KOTD" was okay too. Jet did some fine work but Ms. Fonda has a lot explaining to do. Her part was painful!!

As i haven't seen much Xing Yi or Bagua, i'll have to take your work on it HKV :) But i do know that his Taijiquan in Tai Chi Master was VERY different form the way i have seen my Sifu and others perform their Chen... still a good movie though :)

At least he is popularising gong fu and MA in general, whether he is the best exponent of that particular method or not...

Taoboy: I don't think theres any news on those movies! lol They seem to have fallen in to a void! Silumkid usually has the scoop, but heard nothing form him lately :)

KOTD sucked a lot imo... the plot, acting and fighting... it was mediocre at best imo anyway.

HuangKaiVun

I'll have to get around to watching "Tai Chi Master".

You mentioned Chen style, dezhen2001. Because of that, I basically will be looking for that internal power whole-body striking method that characterizes your style.

Even if his external postures are stylized for the movies, I still want to see the recoiling spiraling jing that has made Chen Style so reknowned as a fighting style. My feeling is that if Jet Li indeed were using Chen Style in this movie, he'd not have the sunken down internal power projection that guys like Chen Xiaowang clearly demonstrate. He didn't have it in "The One" in EITHER style, cool as he looked.

Of course, I want to see if the "Tai Chi" in "Tai Chi Master" even really is Taijiquan. When the English translation of Jet Li stated that "I'm now a Tai Chi Master", I smiled when he demonstrated his point by flashing his Pigua palms. But maybe it's "Tai Chi" as in "Grand Ultimate" as opposed to Taijiquan the specific fighting art.

dezhen2001
07-20-2002, 07:59 AM
I also once saw a showreel of another Chinese MA movie guy called Chiu Man Cheuk (Zhao Wen Zao i think in Mandarin?). He did a demo in a shopping mall, and also did some Chen. They both seem to have a similar style, so maybe it's a compulsory Wushu Taijiquan format? I remember watching the movie at my Sifu's place and afterwards watching a video with Chen Tai Sigung in it (Chen Xiao Wang)... the difference is VERY noticeable! But still, the movie looks good and has some good action in it... whether it's Taijiquan or Pigua etc.

It could mean Taiji as in 'grand ultimate', but he is meant to be Zhan San Feng, the creator of Taiji QUAN, so who knows? btw. the english dubbed version of that movie really sucks! :D

dez,

There's a good reason why Chiu Man Cheuk and Jet's styles look so similar....any guesses?

Yes, it's true! Chiu Man Cheuk was Jet's stuntman for quite some time as well as being his nemesis in Fong Sai-Yuk.

As far as C2TG and Hero...still no release dates that I can find yet. Considering C2TG, they started production in March so you may not expect it to be out until next year perhaps, or at least late this year I'm sure.

Silumkid: 'sup kid, haven't seen u around this hood for a while :D

I already knew those CMC facts ;) Also they both trained in PRC Wushu, and did forms etc. so that's why the Taijiquan is different from Chenjiagou (Chen Village) Taijiquan...

Man i wanna see hero... i have to make do with Tom Cruise in Minority Report :( I'd much rather see Jet or Jackie in something!

Well all....I have finally received some information about "Hero" release date although it isn't specific. I have been informed that they are shooting for a release "possibly" late this year! C2TG will likely be next year....this is all I have so far.

Jet Li rules! :D

What up dez, my brutha?

hi guys and gals ;)

Have u heard anything about a new movie called 'the invincible'? It's produced by our man Jet and Mel Gibson - looks kinda cool

Silumkid: it's all good man ;)

Wushu....what up girlie-o?

Tae Li...don't cry. I am here to revive your thread anytime it is in danger of falling by the wayside. The Church of the Jet Li Cult Kung-Fu Hero Movies must go onward!

dez...sorry to say it, but don't waste your time with Invincible. It came out here in the States several months ago and I was disappointed to say the least. As far as I know, Mel and Jet were merely "executive producers"....basically financiers. The martial art sequences were terrible, the story was poorly written and didn't flow very well at all, and the acting was done in a way I can only describe as "sleepwalk reading". Even Billy Zane seemed like he didn't want to be there, and I think he's an excellent actor. Even the special effects were cheesy. I have a conspiracy theory about Invincible (to be called hereafter Unintelligible)...I think somebody must have talked Mel and Jet into putting a little money into the project because that was the only legitimacy they could put on the thing.

These are the only bad words you wil ever see me write in regards to the Jet and I hope you note this day on your calendar. YES! I detracted from the legion for a moment. It had to be done. We must keep our man Jet on the right path after all.

I thought it looked a bit cheesy and like the Matrix :D
We can't let Jet go over to the 'dark side'

Tae: us few dedicated minions have always kept the thread alive, don't worry ;)

Invincible wasn't a movie, it was a TV pilot, which, by definition, means "schlock released in the hopes someone will pick it up and allow it to become something a little better.

I defy you to name one pilot for television that wasn't schlock. Television's weird, the actors are usually substandard, the script always is, and the time allowed for shooting is not much, so, unlike a movie, in tv, everything is done on a very short schedule with more compromises and no good script.

wow KC that taijiquan must be getting to ya... for ONCE On this thread i agree with what u say

Does anyone remember the tv series of the Crow with a younger Mark Dacascos - schlock compared to even the 2nd crow movie. Highlander the series - movies were all better (even 2 and 3). Adrian Paul was pretty cool though (anyone seen 'the Owl' with him in it?)

can't think of anything else right now... :D

Oh yeh - JET LI, have to at least mention him or i'll get my ass kicked :p Lets hope he learns more about production pretty soon. Jackies group did way better with Gen-X cops (imo only of course) ;)

FJ: hopefully we can better the 10 000, i'd like to see what happens 2 :D

I also thought that the aussie and the asian guy on the invincibles were decent martial artists, especially for television.

And that lady with the ribbon dancing needed to be shot multiple times, twice in each shin, once just grazing the floating rib, etc. Watching that made me cry.

LOL :D

Jet is pretty cool - wonder what his badminton technique is like ;)

Hey - has anyone heard more about this supposed production between jackie and jet? Should be pretty cool if they can come up with a script... kinda reminds me of the whole Jackie/Stallone and Jackie/Snipes thing that never really happened (apart from 'Burn Hollywood Burn' which really sucked!).

Silumkid - what's the happs man? :p

I always feel such a warm welcome when posting in this thread.. :D
yeah I've read somewhere that Jet n Jackie is supposed to star in the same movie!!! That would be the greatest combo in HK flicks ever made. And hey! Am I the only one that wants to see Jet playing the bad guy for once? He could play evil pretty well me thinks.
