I don't think it is the posture or a specific technique as much as it is the type of energy. What I mean by energy is one of the 8 energies peng, lu, ji, an,kao, zhao, cai and lie. They all correspond to a different trigram. This is one way that Taiji ties itself to philosophy.

dre_doggX,
The eight gates correspond to the trigrams.
P'eng (Wardoff) would correspond to the South, and the trigram K'an (Water).
Lu (Rollback) would correspond to the West, and the trigram Li (Fire).
Ji (Squeeze) would correspond to the East, and the trigram Tui (Lake).
An (Press) would correspond to the North, and the trigram Chen (Thunder).
Tsai (Pulldown) would correspond to the Northwest, and the trigram Sun (Wind).
Lieh (Split) would correspond to the Southeast, and the trigram Ch'ien (Heaven).
Chou (Elbow) would correspond to the Northeast, and the trigram K'un (Earth).
Kao (Shoulder) would correspond to the Southwest, and the trigram Ken (Mountain).

The five steps correspond to the five elements.
Advance is Fire.
Retreat is Water.
Gaze Left is Wood.
Look Right is Metal/Wind.
Central Equilibrium is Earth.

The body and hand techniques manifest the eight gates, the feet manifest the five steps.

This info came from Douglas Wile's book, Lost T'ai-chi Classics from the Late Ch'ing Dynasty .

A slightly different variation can be found on the Count's website.

Just wanted to correct the URL Sam gave to my chart.

http://kabooom.com/htmls/Page_4.htmlwith a Capital P.

For a detailed explaination on how the five elements apply to Tai Chi Chuan, pick up the Invisible Web by Dr. Su Yu Chang. It's the most comprehensive I have seen.
