Here is a real cool picture page on bareknuckle pugilism and early western boxers. This page is more of a look back at time than a technique based page, it has pics of the early greats like Cribbs, Mendoza, Sullivan to guys like Jack Johnson and Rocky Marciano.

I know a few of you should get a kick out of these pictures and the fierce fighters who are on the frames.

Cool BlackJack!
Do you have pages for like old streetfighting-type contests similar to the upcoming Leoretardo Decapitated movie?

Keep the Western Martial Arts stuff coming!

John L Sullivan:
"U.S. heavyweight champion bareknuckle boxer. Born in Roxbury, Mass., he became heavyweight champion in 1882 by knocking out Paddy Ryan in nine rounds. His 75-round knockout of Jake Kilrain in 1889 was the last title bout under London Prize Ring (bareknuckle) rules. In his only championship defense under the Queensberry rules, he was knocked out by Jim Corbett (1866-1933) in 21 rounds in 1892. From 1878 to 1905 Sullivan had 35 bouts, of which he won 31, 16 by knockouts. Some boxing historians regard him as a U.S. champion only, because he had only one international match of consequence and he refused to fight the great black Australian heavyweight Peter Jackson. "

Rogue,

It would be cool to find out how he felt on the change from bareknucle pugilism to the new Queensberry rules, how it effected his fighting style, oh wait, I guess we know;)

Badger,

I used to bring all kinds of cool links over on western martial arts/combatives but only a few people seem to enjoy the information.

Can anybody remember the name of the canadian world heavyweight champion?

He was from the 20's or 30's, hahahaha, yes, it's been that long with only a few contenders along the way.

Yeah, he had some type of brain damage. He kept getting ham and calling it bacon for some odd reason!
