NEW CANCER DRUGS

New breast cancer drugs called PARP inhibitors, are like smart bombs, they attack cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unscathed. They target an enzyme that helps cancer cells repair themselves after chemotherapy .

Iniparib ( a PARP inhibitor ) taken along with chemotherapy had a 52% response rate compared to a 32% response rate among those who received chemotherapy alone. This information is from Baylor Sammons Cancer in Dallas.

Olaparib ( another PARP inhibitor ) In a study published last year in the medical journal The Lancet, researchers reported Olaparib shrank tumors in 41% of patients whose cancers stemmed from mutations in the inheritied BRCA-1 and 2- likley a few years away from approval.

Provenge is a Prostate cancer vaccine, it does not cure prostate cancer however it reduced patients overall risks of death by 24%. Provenge was approved last year.
