This is old longfist saying but I think there is some issue here. If your hands can open the door, your leg may be too close to kick. After all, the punching range is always closer than the kicking range. This saying does fit very well in the grappling art though. The moment that your hands get hold on your opponent, your cut, hook, lift, twist, bite, scoop, sweep, spring, block, break, ... can take your opponent down.
I have addressed the "missing leg" issue in Taiji push hand many times. Without leg, Taiji push hand is just "push". With leg, Taiji push hand can be "throw".
