Il Polo Museale del Lazio organizza a Roma, nella doppia sede di Castel Sant’Angelo e Palazzo di Venezia, una mostra dedicata interamente al mondo delle armi in età rinascimentale. La mostra, curata dallo specialista Mario Scalini, vede nel catalogo la presenza di Massimo Carlo Giannini.
Le armi, da sempre compagne di vita e di morte dell’Uomo, assunsero giusto nel Rinascimento una dimensione totalizzante, soprattutto in Italia. Il sistema di valori che le armi sottendevano, infatti, si spingeva allora ben oltre il loro uso concreto, ossia il ferire, l’uccidere il nemico o all’opposto il difendersi. In una società che avvertiva il combattimento o almeno la minaccia della lotta in termini ricorrenti o endemici, questo sistema coinvolgeva aspetti sociali e rituali, simbolici e iconografici. In questo modo si comprendono fra l’altro i tornei e i bagordi, autorappresentazioni rutilanti, spettacolari e truculente del ceto aristocratico e, appunto, combattente.
Diversi fattori concorsero a questa dimensione. Importanti furono ad esempio i progressi nel campo della tecnica: da solo, il rapido affermarsi della polvere da sparo diede il via a una sorta di escalation delle armi da fuoco – e naturalmente di adeguate contromisure difensive. Non minore peso ebbe l’assetto geo-politico: dal 1494 in avanti gli stati italiani divennero, di fatto, luoghi di scontro e di contese per le grandi potenze internazionali, prime fra tutte la Spagna e la Francia.
La mostra affronta ogni aspetto di questo complesso intreccio fra armi e uomini, mitologia e rappresentazione del potere. Essa tiene conto fra l’altro della lunga tradizione dei manuali di arte militare, già in auge nell’età bizantina, come pure di alcune immagini-simbolo del tempo, che raffigurano gentiluomini e talora anche gentildonne corazzati di tutto punto. Castel Sant’Angelo e Palazzo Venezia ospitano due fra i più importanti nuclei al mondo di armi storiche. Partendo da queste straordinarie collezioni, per l’occasione restaurate e riordinate, una serie di prestiti internazionali e un raffinato allestimento fanno conoscere allo specialista e al normale visitatore dei musei un fenomeno rimasto per molto tempo nell’oscurità.

I had the good fortune to be in Rome and saw this two weeks ago but I only saw the Castel Sant'Angelo exhibit. Castel Sant'Angelo has a small armoury display - three rooms but some excellent piece. Most of the pieces in this special exhibit were from Castel Sant'Angelo and Palazzo Venezia, with a few pieces from the Stibbert.Quote:

The Polo Museale of Lazio organizes in Rome, in the double seat of Castel Sant'Angelo and Palazzo di Venezia, an exhibition dedicated entirely to the world of weapons in the Renaissance age. The exhibition, curated by the specialist Mario Scalini, sees in the catalog the presence of Massimo Carlo Giannini.
The weapons, always companions of life and death of Man, assumed right in the Renaissance an all-encompassing dimension, especially in Italy. The system of values that the weapons underwent, in fact, went so far beyond their concrete use, namely the wounding, killing the enemy or, on the contrary, defending oneself. In a society that sensed combat or at least the threat of struggle in recurrent or endemic terms, this system involved social and ritual, symbolic and iconographic aspects. In this way they include, among other things, tournaments and revelries, bright, spectacular and truculent self-representations of the aristocratic and, indeed, combatant class.
Several factors contributed to this dimension. For example, advances in the field of technology were important: on its own, the rapid establishment of gunpowder gave rise to a sort of escalation of firearms - and of course adequate defensive countermeasures. No less weight had the geo-political structure: from 1494 onwards the Italian states became, in fact, places of confrontation and disputes for the great international powers, first of all Spain and France.
The exhibition deals with every aspect of this complex interweaving of arms and men, mythology and representation of power. It takes into account, among other things, the long tradition of military textbooks, already in vogue in the Byzantine period, as well as some symbolic images of the time, which depict gentlemen and sometimes even armored ladies at all points. Castel Sant'Angelo and Palazzo Venezia are home to two of the most important cores in the world of historical weapons. Starting from these extraordinary collections, for the occasion restored and rearranged, a series of international loans and a refined exhibition make known to the specialist and the normal visitor of the museums a phenomenon that has remained for a long time in the darkness.
