diff between pullups/chinups?

I apologise for the dumb question, but what is the difference between pullups and chinups?

Theoretically, pull-ups are done with the palms facing the pull-up-er.

Chin-ups are done with the palms facing away.

I always called a palms-facing-away-up a pull-up, and a palms-facing-in-up a chin-up.

Yeah.. or could it be that they mean exactly the same thing? All the motions where you lift your body weight so your chin comes up the same level where your hands are?

I always heard chinup as being with palms facing you (that's what we called them in gym class).

Pullups was palms away, hands far apart.

But now, everyon seems to call everything "chins."

I guess it doesn't matter. However, whenever I write about one on here, I always specify where the hands are and how the palms are facing :)

Pull-ups are done with the palms facing you; they primarily work the biceps and the lats.
Chin-ups are done with the palms facing out from you and that works the back and lats too. THe wider you go, the more deltiod(shoulder) muscles you involve, and that may not be the best thing: the shoulders are easy to hurt, especially the rotator cuff.
