Wed May 6
Today I just ran out of time.
Slept 11 hours last night - that stuff really killed me.
Woke up late for work this morning.
Snuck in a leg workout:
Deadlift: 10x 135 (form almost like a squat), 8 x 185 (still lots of leg bend -it's harder), 6 x 225 (more like romanian)
Squat: 10 x 135, 8 x 185, 6 x 225 (ATG on all of 'em, last rep was a little shaky)
After that I had to go to this monthly get together for work - it's like a technology discussion with different presenters each month.
Got outta there after 9 and by then I was yawning, so I didn't have it in me to sneak in my 45 min of cardio.
Gonna sleep here soon and hopefully wake up at a reasonable hour.

Thur May 7
Had a pretty good day today.
Couldn't sleep for cr@p wed night, didn't pass out till like 3 am, eventhough I first laid down around 10:30.
Woke up late for work of course, needed coffee to get my brain working.
Ducked out of work an hour early to work with my coworkers at the mma gym.
We did a little stretching, some shadow boxing, and then worked on technique & 1 step sparring.
After that I went to the muay thai gym.
Did a ton of shadow boxing & heavybag, tried to focus on footwork and staying mobile, not letting my knees lock.
Got out of there kinda late but still decided to do my cardio.
Went to Gold's for 50 min of cardio.
Calorie count wasn't anything too major, but I was freakin dyin.
I don't think my cardio classifies as "long distance slow" as I'm always pushing it.
-
I don't feel like working out ever on friday nights- it's my favorite night to just go home and chill.
Saturday 5/9
Went out to muay thai without eating breakfast.
took a practice jump to see if my rib could handle it - didn't feel right, about a minute later it started aching and bothered me the rest of the day.
My lead side was mostly out so I did a lot of stuff with my rear.
Got in a pretty good workout - i was soaked.
Afterwards, went to Gold's gym for a 1 hour cardio session
Didn't feel quite as dead as Thursday night, but I was hurting.
Sunday 5/10
Swung by Gold's for another workout.
30 min of cardio this time.
Didn't break any records, but it was kinda rough - hard to get going at the beginning and broke a real good sweat.
Afterwards took a few laps in the pool and lounged in the jacuzzi.
-
Monday 5/11
Tough day today.
One of those pride hurtin days.
Golds at lunch
15 min on the elliptical, low setting, going for speed - aggravated my ribs, but was too stubborn to stop
overhead press - 45 x 10, 65 x 10, 95 x 10, 95 x 10 - went for speed
assisted pullup - 14plates assist x 10, 12 plates assist x 10, 10 plates x 8, 10 platex x 6 - again, went for speed. Plates were like 4 pounds each, starting from 20 i think.
In the evening went to muay thai.
started off with a lot of squats & lunges wearing weight vest, using 45lb dbells
even did calf raises
shadowboxed for 3 rounds straight through
hit the heavybag for around 45min
coach asked me to hold pads for this guy who started coming recently - mma kinda guy with half way decent boxing, at first i balked but decided to anyway.
we went for 3 rounds.
after that iw as pretty much done.
my spirit wanted to do more but my body couldn't
my ribs were bugging me pretty bad
felt pretty useless by the end of the night
one of those situations where you gave your best, but don't feel it's enough and almost want to cry you feel so helpless/impotent.
Could probably use some time off to actually let my rib heal, but gonna keep working out till the baby comes.
-
Tuesday 5/12
hit the mma gym after work for another heavybag workout in the hotbox.
pretty good/exhausting workout, eventhough I didn't hit up gold's for cardio
wore the back brace all day yesterday
soaked it completely with sweat
it ripped up my side pretty good
didn't wear it to bed last night or today, need to wash it.
stinging pain in my ribs today.
slept around 10 hours last night, but woke up a few times.
really weird, vivid dreams.
-
Mon 6/1
Hit the gym for the first time since may 12
Only went to Gold's, didn't make it to the muay thai gym.
30 min of cardio on the elliptical crosstrainer - found it hard to really push myself.
kettle bell swings - 10 right, 10 left, 10 both hands
ab complex - med ball crunches, med ball twists, leg lifts - 10 each, 2 sets, kinda hurt
hyperextension (for the back) - 20 x 2
went grocery shopping after that
came home, unloaded and got hungry.
had a bite to eat and then ended up helping with the baby the rest of the evening
at least i went to bed early and got up on time.
these first few weeks back are gonna be tough
-
tues 6/2
good workout today, but typing this I know i'm not close to where i need to be.
went to gold's at lunch
30 min elliptical - pushed it a lot harder than last time, still not quite as much as before
dips - unassisted for about 4 reps
moved to decline press (the weight machine with the dip motion)
90 x10, 125 x 10, 160 x 10, 195x5
ran out of time
mma gym after work
did an aggressive calisthenic warm up
went straight into burn outs
2 separate burnouts 2 times each
#1 - for speed: 30s 1-2s, 30s pushups, 30s knees, 30s squats, 30s rear round, 30s lead round, 30s cross-hook
#2 - for power: 10 reps of 1-2, 10 pushups, 10 knees ea leg, 10 jump squats, 10 round kicks each leg, 10 cross-hooks
next was shadowboxing
finished up with stretching
after that was the muay thai gym
jump rope for 10 min
(5 jumping jacks + 1 burpee) x 10
lunges x 15 ea leg
squats x 20
calf raises x 50
did heavybag for the next 30 minutes or so
partner work - focus mitts & thai pads for 3 rounds apiece after that
finished up with some medium hard sparrin against a dude my own size, he's not real slick but i made it harder by trying to go orthodox. decent work, he landed 1 nice leg kick and 1 nice hook. caught him a few times.
-
wed 6/3
rough day
at work, as the day went on i got more and more stiff & sore
30 min of cardio at gold's
went to muay thai & did a lot of takedown defense.
tweaked my knee. think it's just twisted & an extension of getting kicked on the joint on tuesday.
hurting today
-
thurs 6/4
did triple duty
after work went to the mma gym with the coworkers
very aggressive calisthenics workout, followed by shadow, and around 30+ minutes of very interactive pad work - i held but it was almost like sparring
muay thai gym after that
only stayed an hour
got in jump rope and more calisthenics
finished up with 20 minutes of pad work, half of which was me doing the hitting
gold's gym after that
30 minutes of cardio
it hurt
-
fri 6/5
was lucky to work with Water Dragon tonight (thanks again man!)
he gave me a pretty good primer for the work I need to be putting in the rest of the 6 weeks to get ready.
we finished up a little earlier than the class but we started an hour early, so i don't think it was a huge deal.
wasn't used to working out in the judogi, just having the jacket on was sapping my energy - not to mention the draining effects of repeatedly picking yourself up off the mat.
I'll do a lot better next time.
-
Saturday 6/06
met up with wd for judo in the morning
really fun
lots of nice people
i think i'm going to make it a habit to hit up the saturday morning class
muay thai after noon
the older kru's last day before going back to thailand for a few months
stayed there for a couple hours and put in a killer workout in a sweltering gym
finished out with a trip to Gold's for 30 minutes of pretty high intensity cardio, i tend to do a lot of sprints even when i'm going for distance.
left the house before 10am, got home by 4pm, i'd say it was a pretty good workout day.
-
how are those new custom gloves working out for ya? starting to get broken in yet?
saturday morning classes, huh? ****. i could never make it to my groups weekends morning classes. before 12pm, i am either just getting to bed or just waking up.
and i am curious to hear the write-up on the gloves you have. as u know, i need a new pair myself.
-
The shevlins rock.
I love both pairs.
They make the most beautiful sounds on the bag.
The thumbs are almost where i like 'em.
Sometimes I forget I'm wearing them.
mon 6/8
had my first appointment with my new sports trainer/chiro/nutritionist in the morning.
told me that my hip & knee problems were likely do to the elliptical.
guess i'm gonna have to do something else for cardio.
gold's after work
REALLY tired and unmotivated, don't ask me how i ended up at the gym, bad sleep Sun night.
30 min on the recumbent bike.
didn't kill my knees for once, but it was really low intensity.
think i may just bring my jump rope in the future.
muay thai in the evening
skipped calisthenics for heavybag
spent the rest of the night training bareknuckle partner drills & light contact sparring.
The bareknuckle game's soooo different than with gloves - a lot faster, like a sprint vs a marathon.
lot of my old kung fu stuff was coming out and my footwork started coming back, it was a ton of fun.
nice to be working out with my buddy sam again, even if he was the one who cracked my ribs....twice.... :D
-
d*mn! those gloves sound like something i'd have a dream about. lol.
of course the kung fu stuff comes out barehanded. good to hear that - means that u have actually trained it properly for what length of time u did.
more san ti shi! seriously, then bring that structire into your fighting and u will KO people with a jab. also, that structure, great for sprawling and being able to manipulate without using much of your energy.
as u see, i brought the ichi killer flavor with me. this board needs a little ichi wisdom. :D
tell me about your knee problem - i have a knee injury too. it has kept me out of hitting the kuoshu circuit.
-
my knee joint just feels misaligned.
my left hip's bothering me, feels like the hip flexor on the side is pulled or strained & has felt that way most of the year. hadn't slowed me down much in the past, but it really flared up after last week.
it's all due to structural imbalances caused by my 2 different sized legs, but has been exacerbated by my elliptical usage.
hoping the chiro can fix me up but he's a bit expensive.
meanwhile my motivation thus far this week has been nil.
the shevlin gloves are sweet if you like the feel of old school gloves- which have very snug pockets, no big hangar bay to slide your hand in, and is no pre-shaped fist.
