Hi Dale that Iron Palm and Iron Vest stuff looks interesting. Where did you learn shuai Jiao from.
Ive learned Shuai from friends as well as picked up some nasty throws from Kwan Sai Hung and my Shrfu Dr. John Painter. I also trained in Judo and Aikido while living in Japan and have a fondness for throwing. Bagua has tons of Shuai built into its material.
All martial arts have tons of Shuai. Most combative altercations end up in the clinch range where throwing becomes second nature.
Jake :)
Actually Shuai is a concept found in all arts as I forgot to mention and Jake reminded me.
You posted Judo and Taijiquan experience. Taiji is also full of Shuai material as well. Judo is very similar to Shuai Jiao but a bit different due to it being nicer in application.
Ive been shown many ways to throw the human body.
Throwing is one of my fav things to do.
I can't comment on the Suai Jiao much since I have ..at this stage..not learned any. I've only been studying 8 step mantis for a little over a year. Supposedly in it's development..a master incorporated a good ammount of Suai Jiao into the system..I believe moreso than 7 star mantis.
Though I have never had the privledge of meeting the man..I have browsed thru Dr.Yang Jwing Ming's book entitled "Tai Ji Chin-Na"..it's looks really fascinating!!
What confuses me I suppose is this: is Dr. Ming commenting and demonstrating these Chin-Na moves as they are an ADJUNCT to traditional tai chi moves...or...is he in essence stating that each tai-chi posture IS/HAS ITS OWN separate Chin-Na application?
Can anyone comment on this?
Didn't mean to drift off onto the Chin-Na. My sifu in 8 step has done some Suai throws that have landed me on my a-s with my body contorted in some of the most unusual positions! The funny thing about it..is...each maneuver has a unique name such as "disciple stands before the throne" or some other such name(that one I just made up)..but it's very interesting how something may look at times rather peculiar when done free standing without an application ..yet when applied...BAM!!!...seee...yaaaaaa!!!!
I have been living and training in shuai Jiao in Beijing for over a year now. http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=wizcoolc
Thanks. Ganna put up a new video in a few days took it today. Me and Zhou Lao Shi sparring. After I did three rounds with these tough as nails teenagers I taped a round with one of my teachers. Zhou Lao Shi is a three time national Shuai Jiao champion. Probably one of the leading authoritys on Beijing Shuai Jiao in the world.
Brothers and Sisters,
This years Zhang Sang Feng is going to be great as they have relocated the festival to a resort with luscious grounds and everyone will have ac in the hotel rooms.
I will be teaching workshops on Shuai concepts found in Baguazhang and other arts as well as Dit Da For Martial Artists. Our own lord of Qi Gene Ching will be teaching Shaolin Eight Brocade Qigong.
For more information on the new locale and other instructors and presenters visit:

It was great meeting up with some KFOers last year and I look forward to seeing more people this year.
be well, train hard
Dale Dugas
P.S. Make sure to take a gander at my recent article on Iron Palm for MMA in the new issue of Kung Fu Qigong Magazine...:D
The Zhang San Feng Festival is the only place where I teach martial arts publicly nowaday (although my master Yan Fei is trying to get me to take over warm-ups and lead drills again - I'm trying to decline courteously). I lead writing workshops mostly, not just for publication - writing as an adjunct to training (as in journal keeping etc.) I'm leading one at ZSF, as always.
I'll be there assisting my new Taiji Shifu Ping Cheng, he's gonna teach some great workshops on Sun Style, Xing I and Alchemy.
My CLF brother taught me a version of 8 brocades that he modified to develop explosive power in CLF, if I am free I would love to check out Gene's seminar. \\
I'm REALLY excited, the line up looks awesome,
Robert,
I look forward to meeting you and your shifu. it is going to be a great time.
I will be the big bald guy wearing a kilt selling Dit Da Jow, and various other cool schwag.:D
Apparently I'll be manning a vintage internal DVD's booth,
no kilt though?
see you there,
All masters of the martial arts wear kilts.
Large amounts of qi create better body dynamics:D
I'm going to be soaking in the hot tub with a cross-dressing snake oil salesman.
Yes you are..........:D;)
videos will be required of this...
Ill be taking some little clips here and there.
For those of you who can make it, it is going to be a great time....
Anyone else from the forums attending? Bring your kilt.
I will be turning 41.
I will be bringing some good single malt and cigars.
Look forward to seeing some KFO peeps as well as Gene.
'nuf said. Now I'm looking even more forward to this weekend.
SWEET!
Now I'm really stoked;)
I get in early day time on Friday with the lion dance crew.
See you guys there
:D
I have a bottle of 12 year old Mcellan as well as a Bowmore with some american ginseng in it and nice bottle of high end bourbon.
Going to be some good night training this year....
Gene, Dale
My leave got approved and will be up there again, looking forward to seeing you all again. Did anyone else's wife see the flyer and decide they were coming with. Horrible idea to send the resort flyer to the house. Be there on thursday.
Later,
Josh
My wife has a black belt and has no inclination to come. Nice to have some me time away from the house and all that.
Look forward to seeing you again Josh and new peeps.
Plus you get to take your photo with a man in a skirt.........
you put ginseng in your bowmore?
how about a nice caol ila?
I put a little seng in the single malt as then I can claim it is therapeutic to the little woman......
The big dude in the skirt has to put herbs in his Bowmore to convince his black belt wife that it's therapeutic?
And I'm going to be soaking in a jacuzzi this weekend with this dude?
I have an unadulterated Macallan, as well as some nice Woodford Reserve Bourbon.
The ginseng is not bad in the bowmore.
Look forward to that hot tube ;);)
Looking forward to seeing you all too.
Besides I'm from S.F. Kilt wearing is nothing compared to what I'm used to.
aw man sounds like a good time. cigars mcallen ummmm..... one of my companies clients were sponsors for last years vh1 rock honors and i got to go as their representative. i had an awesome hotel room, and three bottles of mcallen. needless to say it was awesome.lol
The single malt I will share.
I do not know about my stogies though......
I'm on a red-eye and will be there tomorrow morning. See you all then.
The new venue was a major step up, although air conditioning was a problem for some. Most notable was that I broke Dale's shot glass cherry; Ginseng in Bowmore is an abomination against the heavens so Dale deserved that.
It was really great to see everyone. I'll chime in with a little more here later, once I've caught up a little more here. I just wanted to be first back with the cherrypoppin' tale. :p
Yeah I had never been given a shot glass before and Gene gave me a cool one from San Fran.
The bowmore with added American Ginseng was great! Though Gene as noted above did not like it.
I did get a little lit but it was my birthday...
Had some great workshops teaching Shuai Jiao concepts and Dit Da for martial artists. I had Sifu John Greene in my Shuai Jiao workshop and Sifu Pedro Cepero Yee in my dit da course. Great to see other brothers attending!
It was a great time and always a pleasure to see people sharing and crossing over the silly political bridges to build friendships.
I of course had my bagua brothers beat me to show how Iron Body training lets you take some serious blows.
More later,
Dale
...so I combed the cheesy overpriced airport tourist shops for something that would fit a kilt-wearing gorilla like Dale (honestly if you ever get to meet Dale face-to-face, he's one big dude and I mean that in a complimentary sort of way). There was only one of the shot glass of choice on the shelves, it was made in China, and it was the most kilt-wearing (which I mean in a totally derogatory sort of way) - absolutely perfect for something that would soon be soiled by that Bowmore-ginseng abomination. Fortunately, I wound up spilling my Bow-seng on the chief by totally accident (he thought it was quite funny at the time).
Dale's totally right about the sharing, crossing over and building friendships stuff. That's the best part about the Zhang San Feng Festival. There's no competition, so little attitude. Everyone just enjoys it all. There's a lot of beginners for sure, but there's enough high level skills to keep more advanced students interested. In fact, often the high level stuff goes flying over most of the attendees heads, but that's fine. At least they get exposure (and not in the what's under Dale's kilt sort of way).
I know, I know, I give Dale a hard time about the kilt. And truth be told, I never saw him in it all weekend.
Time to merge this with all the previous ZSF threads, just for archival simplicity.
Brothers and sisters,
Very soon we will be having the annual Zhang San Feng Festival at:
THE NEVELE GRAND RESORT
1 Nevele Road
Ellenville, NY 12428
I will be presenting a few different workshops and wanted to invite anyone to come and have a great weekend full of fun, training and me in a kilt.
I will be teaching a few different workshops this year.
1. Intermediate and advanced Iron Palm/Iron Hand.
2. Examining Circles in Chin Na
3. Muscle Restructure
Animal Power Sets
I will also be available for private lessons during the duration of the festival.
Do not miss out on getting to meet Gene Ching face to face, as well as yours truly.
For more information visit the Zhang San Feng Festival Website
I look forward to seeing you there!
