What do you all think of him??
hsu is the sh!t
sartorially astute
Adam has some great views on TCMA and MA in general, a very function first type of guy from his article and books I have read.
One of those the believes in dissecting forms to make them work.
His view that kung fu must first and foremost be a fighting system is bang on in my view.
Did some Pi Qua/Pek Gwa with him and some sword. Very skilled and knows the real applications. He would have been "bigger" here if he had sucked up and towed the "party line" but instead he told the truth! Go figure!
Sparred wiith one of his experienced guys once. Mofo was realy, really good.
His training was legit. Very cool stuff.
I have the sword polishers book he wrote.
Very insightful.
Can't say nutt'n Bad about a guy who knows a rare as he11 Tai Tzu form!! :D
Adam Hsu debunked myths and showed real applications when other teachers were trying to sell "party line" stuff like the "shaolin myth". His applications are spot on, demonstrate the "4 skills" and there was no fluff in anything I saw. So what did you hear/see?
how to put this? Uh, guys with 3 students, teaching out of a garage in the middle of nowhere, upset that Adam Hsu is on the cover of every major magazine in the country :D I"ve heard similar stuff, then mentioned I actually studied with him, then got a lot of "well, you misunderstood me, blah blah"
Adam is the man.
And yeah, 100% agree with David. Adam did not toe the "party line" He was one of the few who didn't kow tow to the existing power structure either. He did his thing and was very effective without needing anyone else. A man's man.
He knows what he is on about dont worry about that :D
The Wu Tang school in NY that I am aware of is the biggest bunch of LARP'ers I've ever seen, and that says a lot
well whatever you heard from them is crap. truly adam hsu knows what he's talking about thats why everyone here is commenting on him, he shows clear down to earth realistic applications. and he can explain what he does. he is a true master.
There was a line of tai tzu chang quan through Adam Hsu's baji/pigua teacher Liu Yun Chiao. I assume he's talking about this.Quote:
You talking about his "thunder" Taiji form?
I love the sword polisher's record. It reveals more about the nature of kung fu, silk-reeling/chan si jin, etc. than any other book out there.
And I agree with lkmfdc, he probably has the most insightful article about shaolin there is.
I had met Adam Hsu a frew times off and on over the years but really got to know him when he introduced his weapons sparring. I was living in Washington DC at the time and he came to Baltimore to do a seminar at Anthony Goh's school. Tai Yim todl me about the seminar and drove me up. I remember the look on people's faces when Adam Hsu told them they really had no idea how to fight with their weapons, then SHOWED them that he was corect...
Adams' straight sword is top notch, great quality and if anyone is looking to buy a stright sword, I would recommend it.
I had the honnor of not only meeting him but crossing hands with mr. Hsu while living in SF.
He studied with my teachers teacher Wei Xiao Tung of 8 step in Taiwan and is good friends with my Shifu.
I must say that not only is he the real deal of some of you guys put it, but well versed and moves quickly and efficiently.
I was holding a book against my chest and he was hitting it using a phoenix eye and I could feel it right through the book. i on the other hand hurt my knuckle trying to penetrate through the hard cover LOL.
I must say that of all the older great teachers from Asia he ranks up there in the top 10.
I've always liked him, especially when I say him on the Living Legends of Kung Fu video years back. It had Doc-Fei Wong, Chan Poi, Brendan Lai and Adam Hsu. I Think they all made a very good showing, but Hsu came off the tightest. He's the real deal, no joke.
Ah, there is always something to b!tch about. Only in CMA do you get credit for what you s@ck at, but none for what you are good at.
The only people whinier are the fake CMA people!
flying monkey
I am not trying to knock him, I am just reporting what I heard. I also heard negative things about him from people in the taiwan school. maybe they are just hating, the explanations given to me why were pretty good.
No matter WHO you are or HOW great you are at what you do SOMEONE will always have something negitive to say............... just human nature
I would however listen to sanjuro and mas Judt and others about the he said she said crap and meet him personally and only then make your opinon and not take others that I would lead to believe they have never trained with crossed hands with or met Adam Hsu...........
never touched hands with him, but he "originated" the first ever weapons sparring division at NACMAF in '93 - not only was he clear and concise in explaining the rules, he showed no favoritism and officiated consistently; he also spoke intelligently and had the bearing of a true gentleman on top of what appeared to be considerable knowledge about CMA weapons usage; and again, he's got one heck of a tailor!
His jackets are way cool.
The necromancer (me) doesn't like his Jian design. Too anorexic.
In Taiwan Adam heard that one of the full contact champ in China lived in Taiwan, Adam took his sleeping bag with him and found that person and stayed 3 weeks with that champ. It's very difficult to see people with that much love in CMA in today's society.
In Taiwan Adam heard that one of a full contact champ in China lived in Taiwan, Adam took his sleeping bag with him and found that person and stayed 3 weeks with that champ. It's very difficult to see people with that much love in CMA in today's society. His opinion about "internal" and Qi made a lot of Taiji masters unhappy in Taiwan. he is a true "down to earth" person IMO.
Be that as it may... I still don't like his Jian design.
Adam's famous saying:
- Going through elementary school 5 times won't give you a Phd degree.
- Many people refuse to graduate from elementary school.
- You want to grow "tall" and not grow "fat".
- Your stances are so perfect that you have 6 horse stances in your form and they all look identical.
- What's the value of your new form that you have just created? Have you created some new skill or you just rearrange some old CMA skills in different order?
- The sword dance and dance with sword are different.
- If you have 3 baskets and label them as "beginner", "intermediate", and "advance" then can you divide your training methods in those basket?
- How will you deliver your triple punches? Do you punch as 3 fast punches, 1 slow punch and 2 fast punches, or 2 slow punches and 1 fast punch?
- The day that you train your weapon forms without holding a weapon, the day that you understand what "Shenfa" means.
- During the end of the Ming dynasty, some none CMA scholar created the word "internal" so Chinese can argue about "internal" vs. "external" for the next 300 years.
YKW, those are some awesome aphorisms...especially the last.
