Was Wong Fei Hung A Muslim?...

I'm not saying I believe it, but I did find this on a Silat forum so I thought I'd ask. The original's in Malay or Indonesian, so I used the translate feature. Since this is a Chinese martial arts forum, I figured this'd be the place to ask. Does anyone know if it's true?

no, i am afraid it is not true, kind of fantastic theory with no evidence

Wong Feihung's first biography was written in 1933 by his second generation student Jyu Yujai (student of Lam Saiwing, who studied under Wong Feihung form 20 years). none of the old and new Chinese/Hong Kong sources mentions that Wong Feihung was a Hui (ie. Chinese Muslim). my sigung has studied with Lam Saiwing (his uncle) from 1916 to 1943, i am sure that Lam Saiwing would mention something like this to him. (and btw. Lam Saiwing's nickname was Jyu Yu Wing, ie. "Porky Wing", as he worked as a butcher when he was young. he brought pork meat to Wong Feihung on regular basis)

By the time WFH died, he was not a popular guy in the martial arts circle.

A hero he was not, for what reasons the times would speak for itself.

A muslim, hard to even believe it to warrent a question on the forum.

Look at the forms and names that was passed down.

If you want to look at a real TCMA hero who was Muslim, just look at Chang Dung Sheng....

But then again, look at him and things he did compared to Wong Fei Hung and you can clearly see that Wong was NOT Muslim

I apologize Once Ronin if I offended you by posting the question. You're right, I should have just googled Wong Fei Hung to find out what style he practiced and all the other particulars. I guess I just didn't think it would be that big a deal. I'll be more careful in the future.

Faruq - there are many styles of CMA adopted, developed or practiced by Chinese Muslims. Hung gar is not one of them. Correcting this misunderstanding is no big deal. Relax. I've noticed a lot of this kind of thing - like the story that Neil Armstrong 'discovered' Mecca was the center of the Universe when he was in space. That never happened either. Some folks spread crazy rumors - you did the smart thing to ask around for proof.

Correcting 'facts' that really spurious statements created to take advantage of peoples credulity is in no way a personal attack. If anything, getting the info helps you speak with accuracy from the folks who know. I don't think anyone was 'upset' by your question or are upset with you. Really.

The Hui people are a large minority ethnic group in China.
They are muslim and number some 10 million with most of them living across the northern provinces stretching eastward from northwestern china, where canton isn't.

There are muslims in every single province including Guangdong. Yeah, I knew about the Muslims in the North and the styles they practiced because there was an article several years back about them in Kung Fu Magazine dot com. I just didn't know there were Hui in Canton and Guangzhou, and thought if they were native to those two southern regions they might practice different arts. I guess you guys are saying the Hui there are just immigrants from the North and practice the Northern styles though, hunh?

And and interesting story about the Hui. A lady who worked a t an office I did a developmental detail at a few years back came up to me really friendly and introduced herself. She asked me if I was a Muslim and told me her people were Muslims too, from Taiwan if I remember correctly. She was so nice to me (though everyone else said she was usually a grouch and tried not to interact with her) that she brought me a gift on my last day: a Vietnamese pork sandwich. She then said "oh but you probably don't eat pork though, do you? I guess I'll have to eat it myself..." lol

First, SOME Muslims wanted to claim that Xuan Zhang (The Chinese Buddhist Monk who traveled to India in the Journey To The West) as Muslim with misleading theories and conclusions.

Second, An Indonesian Professor Fahmi Basya recently was trying to claim that the Candi Borobudur (which is known internationally as Buddhist Architecture) was built by Early Prophet of Islam based on his subjective theories. This effort had created a long fierce debate in the website. Meanwhile, the supporters of this idea still face tough opposition from the opponents.

Third, EVEN HUANG FEI HUNG IS CLAIMED BY THESE MUSLIMS !!!
I even challenged the poster of this article to come and see Memorial Hall of Huang Fei Hung in Fo Shan as well as to directly ask the descendent of Huang Fei Hung or direct disciple of him to clarify the truth. But no one dares.

I really had enough. I respect their religion but I believe such practice of claiming will not have positive results or benefits to anybody. If you have faith to your religion, why do you still need to claim physical objects such as person or buildings?:confused:

You are right. Fortunately, more people come out to debunk this hoax in other places. Although their efforts are sporadic (not in coordinated manner), I am sure the hoax will be cleared sooner or later.

As you say, similar hoaxing practices may not completely stopped. But at least one of the topics can be cleared and by that time, more people will know the truth.

The reason I put this post here are :

It wasn't hateful. It sounds like he was tired of what he perceived to be "cultural theft" by the muslim religion, and this post was what finally set him off. He never said he hated muslims. He said he hated how he felt that muslims were stealing cultural icons and propping them up as their own.

If I see something saying a famous Chinese martial artist was Muslim and not being Chinese or knowing kung fu culture, this is probably the place I'm going to come to ask if it's true or not. I apologize in advance Formless Kungfu, but I have nowhere else to ask. But yes, if you also posted this on the forum where the claim was made, not here where I asked whether it was true or not, then yes similar hoaxing topics can be cleared and by that time, more people will know the truth.

Yeah, the Arabic-speaking Christians of the world refer to God as Allah too (you know the Moslems believe they follow the true religion of Abraham). So if an Arab Christian is praising God (Allah), I could see how that could cause confusion. Then again you've got the related cognates Elah and Eloah in Aramaic and Hebrew (http://www.hebrew4christians.com/Nam...oha/eloha.html) just to confuse things more.

Here's a small thing that I understand about Malaysia.

It is predominantly Muslim.

The Christians who are there refer to god as Allah, that's how strong Islam is in Malaysia.

There is fierce pride in youth, especially in regards to religion when practiced, or styles danced, or music listened to, etc etc.

People who have little in the way of self esteem or personal empowerment will often seek to lure such minds by entertaining those childish prideful things.

And yeah, Wong Fei Hung, like Jesus, was a Jew. :D (levity, levity now)

Malaysia is a predominantly muslim country. It is the official religion of the country actually. I do not think there is a reference to Allah in any scripture regarding how Jesus referred to god. Jesus was a rabbi, a Jew. god/tetragrammaton/YHVH to him would be in aramaic or hebrew and would be yaweh.

At least, that's what i learned me in school! :)

Yes, Jesus was a Jew who was said to have spoken Aramaic. In Aramaic, God is Allah.

Check out the movie Passion of the Christ as it's in Aramaic and when Jesus is on the cross and he's asking God why has he forsaken him... He says Allah, because that is the term used in Aramaic for God.

But its all good!:) Did you know Mohammad the prophet wrestled? Faruq, maybe you can put us on to the type of wrestling that was trained by Mohammad? And do they still practice today?

Sorry, the last guy I knew who knew those facts and where to look up the historical sources for them was back in college. I could only say it would be the wrestling and sword-fighting arts practiced on the Arabian Peninsula back in the 600s. The only other guy I've heard mention it since then is a famous Greek Orthodox convert to Islam named Hamza Yusuf who the second President Bush made his consultant on Islam and Muslims back when he was President. He has like hundreds of speeches out on CD on different aspects of Islam, and I heard it on one of his CDs (I don't remember which one). Since he's famous, I don't know if he'd respond if I contacted him, or if I could even find any contact information for him...
