I Got A Job!!!!! Yaaaahooo!!!!
I was recently layed off due to "workforce reduction" in Austin.. and it really bumed me out.. I have worked so hard to gain a degree and multiple certifications in the computer world, but I came to relize that I was a dime a dozen in Austin. I got the offer letter the other day, but was suprised to hear that I was really the only one with a college degree and certs, I don't know if that is good or bad. I have put so much hard work into a valid degree and now my question to you. Is a college degree really worth while, I think it proves that you have a set goal and have applied yourself to achieve it.. or maybe I'm just full of $hit nowadayes..
Oh by the way has anyone had experience with Siemens Business Services.. no not a porn shop.. it is a consulting firm to outsource IT responsibilities..
Thx
Greg

I think it is worth something, however I value experience over a degree anyday. I currently work with a guy who spent the first 10 or so years of his working life shaping surfboards, but has been a programmer for about 20 years. No college degree, no nothing. But I would say he is one of the most valuable software developers we have.
Having said that, I think a degree is a good starting point for when you are looking at prospective employees when the position you are looking to fill requires little or no experience.
BTW congratulations. The job market in the Tech industries is pretty brutal right now.

Exactly!! A degree with experience is worth GOLD in the IT field. Right now it's either, experience w/no degree, experience w/certs, no experience w/degree, or no experience w/certs. That latter two have really hampered the industry, IMHO. Made those WITH certs and degree's with a little experience questionable. It's tough to find a job ANYWHERE in the IT field. Quite a few jobs with the Gov will be opening up soon though! This won't last forever, every company relies on computers. Right now they are trying to see if they can do with very little support. They will find out they can't. Just a minor set back. We all will have a ton of jobs to choose from again (I hope!! ;))
