well I up for throwing a bunch of 5 year olds in the cage and watching them beat each other up so I can capitalize on my MMA class enrollemtns and overcharge the parents on lessons.....:D

seriously I would have to say 18 to fight professionally and 16 to compete amatuer.

16 is still too young for full contact, so amateur with significant gear yes.

18 is old enough for most.

Training can begin way earlier though.

Minor tussles are normal for young guys.

anytime you get your bell rung, and that does not mean KO'd, you have a concussion, and neurological damage. Fact.
They are doing studies now that show the high amount of concussions in High School sports.
Kids should not be taking shots to the head,
unless they already have an in, in the laborers union.
I can't stand the people who live vicariously through their students to prove their toughness.

when you are young, you may not strike or kick too hard.

some kind of glove to avoid nails and pinches

I started fighting young to survive and elected competitive sport much later.

They don't even have to hit hard.

I had an 11 year old drop an adult classmate twice his size with a groin kick ;)

yeah, well they don't hit you hard, but it's all relative. An eleven yr old hitting another eleven yr old is the same thing as an adult hitting an adult.

I think those two kids would wreck 90 percent of the people on this site.:D

In all seriousness, I have been around youth boxing a long time and have never seen any serious injuries, although long term damage is something debatable. The cage headgear does soften some of the impact but damage can still be done. I'm not opposed to 18 and up for full contact fighting and semi-contact style fighting for youths.

i think training kids should be very careful. the kids from my junior high and high school who lifted weights hardcore are all midgets now, and i know some with permanent spine problems from rugby.
