First off I completely agree that standing practice and solo form are not enough alone to develope martial skill. But to develop good sensitivity to your partener (and therefore good martial skills)...
As I have recently learned, before you can hear others you must quieten yourself (i.e. relax/sung). The solo form as well as standing practice will help to achieve this.
