Next month will be 7 years for me.
Coffee rules. I'm hopelessly addicted.
So who takes cream and sugar in theirs? I rarely do. Generally if I'm having an afternoon or evening cup I might take some, but never in my morning...
Oso, what kind of work do you do? It sounds a lot like the industry I'm in.
So what are you using yours for? A doorstop?
That's kind of how my 7* mantis classes were. Most people wouldn't touch hard-contact sparring. It was offered, though, to people who were interested.
I'm actually OK with schools that are this...
For $10,000,000 I'd be more than happy to give up all MA. I'd take up Chi Kung and just work out to keep myself in shape.
I couldn't agree more. It's not that hard. Take your standard 1.5 hour class and break it up like this:
First 30 minutes: warm up with forms then stretch
Second 30 minutes: Drills involving...
There's all kinds of full-contact competition for TMA's like kung fu--San Shou, San Da, etc. It's just not emphasized in schools.
I think it's the training methods more than anything. I hate to...
That's not the only reason. It also keeps you from biting your tongue during fighting.
I'd actually be interested in hearing more about this.
It's a good DVD. I still pull it out and go through it once every other month or so.
I train because I love it. I really don't think I could put in words exactly what it is that makes me want to keep training.
I initially got into the martial arts because I was looking for...
I'd have to say I follow my own philosophy / religion based on what I've learned. I have a strong Christian background and have read the Bible cover-to-cover more than once, but I've also read alot...
Where the Hell did you get that idea? You live in Canda--how exactly would you know that?
I'd say that out of the 40 people or so that I talk to on a regular basis, about 10 believe that the USA...
It was the same when I was there.
That sucks about the whole location/schedule thing. But I would say the 7* school is a great place to start. If you're interested in authetic traditional Chinese Martial Arts, then Sifu Hughes'...
I"ve never been to sifu Pickens' school, but I've heard really good things about him. I was a student of sifu Hughes for a little over a year at USAKFA.
I can't tell you the differences, but I...
jstreet, It sounds like you've got the search under control, but I thought I'd give you my (inexperienced) 2 cents on schools I know in Austin. These aren't kung fu schools, but all will get you in...
That sounds like a lot of theoretical stuff.
#1--How do you know this guy's a grappler? If you're about to get in a fight w/ a stranger it's probably not safe to assume anything.
#2--You should...
I thought both of these quotes were interesting. I've recently switched from a TCMA to an "MMA" (I guess you can call it that) school. There is less ego and pride at my MMA school than at the TCMA...
Thowing out the steroids--You really expect to beat people who train all the time and eat perfectly by going to class 2x / week and eating like crap? Isn't that just like believing in magical chi...
ewallace--can you give me more details? PM me if you want but I might be interested in checking it out.
And Jones-Maltsberger + Nakoma--is that by the airport?
With your attitude, Ray, I'm shocked you haven't gotten into some kind of combative sport by now. From your posts, I'm getting the feeling that:
*You're extremely competitive
*You truly love...
Did you open your San Shou school in San Antonio?
You can tell me to shut up at anytime if I'm overdoing it on the advice, but I've just been through a whole ton of wedding stuff (including my own, I've been in 8 weddings in the last year and a...
