Thumbs up I Got A Job!!!!! Yaaaahooo!!!!

I was recently layed off due to "workforce reduction" in Austin.. and it really bumed me out.. I have worked so hard to gain a degree and multiple certifications in the computer world, but I came to relize that I was a dime a dozen in Austin. I got the offer letter the other day, but was suprised to hear that I was really the only one with a college degree and certs, I don't know if that is good or bad. I have put so much hard work into a valid degree and now my question to you. Is a college degree really worth while, I think it proves that you have a set goal and have applied yourself to achieve it.. or maybe I'm just full of $hit nowadayes..

Oh by the way has anyone had experience with Siemens Business Services.. no not a porn shop.. it is a consulting firm to outsource IT responsibilities..

    Thx
    Greg

    Congrats.

    Hmmm, Siemens rings a Bell.
Aaah, got it I worked for them for 6 1/2yrs in their IT section, keeping their In-house Mainframe buzzing.
But that was nearly 8 years back.

Not familiar with "Siemens Business Services", but in general they are a good employer.
    Plenty of perks and subsidies.

Lots of stuff you can get via them cheap.

    Go for it.

    Congrats again.

I think it is worth something, however I value experience over a degree anyday. I currently work with a guy who spent the first 10 or so years of his working life shaping surfboards, but has been a programmer for about 20 years. No college degree, no nothing. But I would say he is one of the most valuable software developers we have.

Having said that, I think a degree is a good starting point for when you are looking at prospective employees when the position you are looking to fill requires little or no experience.

BTW congratulations. The job market in the Tech industries is pretty brutal right now.

    Great news.

Exactly!! A degree with experience is worth GOLD in the IT field. Right now it's either, experience w/no degree, experience w/certs, no experience w/degree, or no experience w/certs. That latter two have really hampered the industry, IMHO. Made those WITH certs and degree's with a little experience questionable. It's tough to find a job ANYWHERE in the IT field. Quite a few jobs with the Gov will be opening up soon though! This won't last forever, every company relies on computers. Right now they are trying to see if they can do with very little support. They will find out they can't. Just a minor set back. We all will have a ton of jobs to choose from again (I hope!! )

    Good job!!!!!!

Don't fret about the time spent with getting a degree. At least you have one now so it's out of the way. Like others said the most important thing is experience. Cert's are very important in computers mostly networking I think. But no experience and certs or degree can be a hard way to get your foot in the door.

I think if you work for a IT contracting company then certs are even more important than ever. I know the place I work wont even let you try for certain SE possitions without being certified. It seems to me like Win2k, Cisco, and Citrix are the main ones now.

I really hope the market picks up more and more. It's not too bad though I think considering the overall market the IT industry is still one of the most lucrative fields.

    kungfuyou,

What you said reminmds me of how funny it is when certain companies put adds out offering a low paying job and they want a "IT expert" with 10 years experience, 15 degrees, and 50 certifications. The funny part is how the adds remain for months with them unable to fill the possition. Thats what happens you have an ignorant fool hiring for IT jobs.

LOL...a college degree is GOLD. In the IT industry...back in during the EXPLOSION...u didn't even need experience or a college degree. U could get a job making 35000 to 40000...they needed peeps rite away. Now with the IT industry being DEAD...it's really tough...college degree and experience is golden. However it's an oversatuated field! For every one position open u have 100 peeps applying for it! Will be like this for awhile until IT gets back on it's feet...so congrats...must of my friends are IT grads and they're having a hard time finding jobs...doing CSR work rite now.

It's not really relevant, but a friend of mine used to work in the Siemens office in Staines, Middlesex. Inevitably the phone was always answered with the words "Siemens, Staines".

    Anyway, congratulations!

It's kinda funny - I have found that certification is OK, but not essential (I am a programmer though). It is handy having someone around with certifications so you can pick their brains, but a certification does not nessecarily make a good programmer.

I have noticed that too, programers don't need certs as much as SE's, DBA's or Network Engineer's.
