    Shawn Liu aka Deru

Shawn Liu was the former coach for the USA sanshou team and a disciple of Suxi (who was an honorary Abbot in the 80's and 90's).

At demos, at least the ones they did here in Columbus, Shawn Liu would allways be introduced as Cung Le's coach since SL was appointed U.S. team head coach, and Cung Le was on the U.S. team.

Post-script to this: Picked up the current copy of KF Magazine, and lo/behold, they have a feature on Russbo's "Shaolin Gathering", including Disciple Deru(Daru?), AKA Shawn Liu. Works for me. I'm looking to start at the beginning of April, as I'm up to my ears in schoolwork right now.

BTW, Oasis, thanks for the eMail info. Much obliged.

    Okay

Here's how it works: in obscure areas of life, such as martial arts, it is sometimes very hard to tell fiction from facts, as we all know.

Another thing: people LOVE titles. Be wary of them.

Thirdly: Gene, remember a couple years back when I asked you something about Shaolin and monks and the like? It was Shawn in particular to whom I was referring. It was not as much a quest for knowledge as it was something else (wanted to see where you stand on this and how much you know/are willing to tell).

Also, I have done my research for personal and professional reasons on this very matter (remember where I used to live). Keeping in mind what I just wrote, I will say two things: some people make wild claims and have the support of like-minded people who also have the same goal. Money talks. In all fairness, though, some people can teach, even if they themselves never learned much. Tall stories are tall stories and are best left to little kids, but if a person can teach, what matters most? No right answer there, whatever works.

A gymnast and a masseur in China. The local Chinese people know.

    SCFalken, good luck

The last time I saw Sifu Shawn Liu was in 2000 in Texas, he ran into Guolin in front of the Jonie uniform stand. I don't know if things have changed since then but at that time they were far from monkly brothers.

    Guolin has a strong grip.

    ttt 4 2015!

I saw Shawn at Legends of Kung Fu last summer. I took this really poor photo of him. The lighting was really bothersome at LoK's venue last year.

    Look what made China Daily:
Martial arts conference to be held in Georgia

The Georgia-based Shaolin Institute will host its first conference of Chinese martial arts teachers from around the world to discuss improving martial arts services and how to raise salaries for instructors.

The Chinese Martial Arts Teaching Service Standardization conference will be held on Feb 22 at the Shaolin Institute in Norcross, Georgia. The Shaolin Institute is the largest private institute of its kind outside of China, teaching students traditional Shaolin kungfu and modern mixed martial arts. The institute has four locations in the south: Atlanta, New Orleans, Alabama and Louisiana. It has plans to expand across the US and around the world.

As the field of martial arts teaching expands, instructors should be "able to enjoy higher compensation," said an institute coordinator who was not identified in a Jan 2 statement.

The institute recognizes the true value of its instructors in providing a true experience of ancient Chinese martial arts and is currently paving the way for all Chinese martial arts schools worldwide to pay instructors between $25,000 to $50,000 a year in salaries and wages," the coordinator said.

"If the main focus of the Institute is health and happiness of each individual who is willing to travel on that high conscious health path preserving thousands of years of wisdom of China and of the Universe, there should be generations of sufficient income to pay those valuable staff members for their services," the coordinator said.

"Chinese martial arts schools must embrace students' value-based experience along with the drive for a 'warrior character' and honor," said the institute's head master, Shi DeRu, in the release.

"With generations of experience in translating the life values taught by the great ancient Chinese arts and minds here in the US, the Shaolin Institute is an established cultural, health-wellness and martial arts institute, focusing on high conscious communication, personal health and safety education, mind-body training," the institute said.

Shaolin kungfu - also called Shaolin wushu - is one of the oldest forms of martial arts in the world, developed and used by monks in the Buddhist Shaolin temple sometime in the fifth century. This form of martial arts has influenced different fighting traditions in the rest of Asia, including on Japan's karate and Korea's taekwondo.

    Atlanta, GA November 13, 2017

Will this Inspiring Moment happen again at K. Warrior -31st KSF US Open MA Challenge on Dec. 2, 2017 in Atlanta? The similar inspiring fighting moment happened to Cung Le at US Open International Martial Arts Championship in New Orleans in 1996 and to Patrick Barry at K. Superstar – US Open International MA Championship in Atlanta in 2003, and it also happened to Mr. Barry's fiance Rose Namajunas who squared away the matches between her and Joanna Jedrzejczyk to capture UFC strawweight title in Madison Square Garden in New York.

Such inspiring moments have happened to Grand master DeRu's fighters like Cung Le and Patrick Barry many times both in China and the US.

Such inspiring moments have always motivate and inspire the Shaolin Warriors, especially after watching the UFC matches between Rose Namajunas and Joanna Jedrzejczy. This inspiring and outstanding fighter Rose who just captured UFC strawweight title is the fiancé of Patrick Barry, one of the most successful Sanda/Sanshou students of Grandmaster DeRu. Mr Barry is also Rose Namajunas' coach, and has been working along all the way with her during most of her UFC fighting career.

In early 2002, Patrick Barry arrived on New Orleans camps of Shaolin Institute after training for a few months with Russell Jones in Baton Rouge. Bored with bowling and gymnastics, Barry had started spending time at Ancona's Gym and kickboxing club, where even untrained kids could find a fight. After he was knocked out, he decided to get some training before he fought again.

He began his Sanshou kickboxing training with Grandmaster DeRu, who saw his natural talents, his coordination and potentials in his fighting ability. Before long, he was in Gulfport casinos, fought his first pro fight under DeRu, against Robert Paham, a world kickboxing champion. He captured the KSF – Art of WAR II heavyweight champion belt, knocking out Mr. Paham in the 2nd round despite his nerves with shivering moment, before the fight,

In 2003, Mr. Barry fought twice in KSF Art of War III professional Sanshou/Sanda fights in Atlanta, GA. He won both a US National Sanshou Team spot and KSF-K. Superstar World Title by knocking out Paul Gurevidius, a European Sanda/Sanshou and Thai Kickboxing champion. As a US National Team member in 2003, Barry participated in the Wushu Kung Fu World Championships in Macau, China, winning a silver medal in Sanshou heavyweight division. He went on to win the K. Superstar title at US Open International Martial Arts Championship in New Orleans in 2004.

From 2002 through 2008, he fought three times at U S Open International Martial Arts Championships and captured three gold medals in heavyweight international Sanshou divisions. He visited China four times with Grandmaster DeRu, competing in one of Shandong's stadiums and training and sparring with the Chinese national Sanda Team in Xi An knocked out the 3-time Chinese national heavyweight champion and trained many times at the Shaolin Temple in China.

He also participated in “Journey to the East” documentary filmed in China and was named by the Shaolin Temple Masters as a True Shaolin Warrior of the West. He is one of the most loved fighters in China by both audience and the fighters who fought him. His generosity, friendly personality and his happy-joyful attitude has won hundreds of thousands martial artists and audience alike in China. His caring and loving energy affected so many who approached him or trained with him even those fighters whom he defeated and knocked out.

He has fought for many years in Sanshou circle, K1-kickboxing and later on UFC main card before he moved on to fight on Glory main card.

It was an incredible moment for Ms. Namajunas, who described her freelings at the moment of her winning, “I just want to use my gift in martial arts to make the world a better place. This belt doesn't mean anything. Just be a good person. I know we fight, but this is entertainment. Afterwards, it's nothing.”

“We all so happy that she holds such high conscious energy frequency like her fiance, Mr. Barry. We, the Shaolin, as the largest Chinese martial arts family in the world, shall all congratulate her not only her UFC champion belt, but her great spiritual attitude which is so needed in martial arts fighting circles today” said grandmaster DeRu.

She is absolutely one of the few martial artists who do not only care about winning alone but Zen freedom and consciousness with mind-body development and honor of martial arts. That is so Shaolin original heart and mind transmission.

It ’s indeed inspiring to all Martial Arts Amateurs and pros alike, especially K. Warriors of Shaolin Sanda on the US Open Martial Arts Challenge fighting platform.

    K. Warrior – 31st US Open MS Challenge, promoting Shaolin Sanda with the theme of “Zen” freedom and potential in mind-body betterment.

Shaolin Martial Arts is about honor, character and human dignity. The promoter of the K. Warriors, Master DeRu vowed to work together with martial arts community to return to that original martial arts intention to make the world an honorable and better place!

    K. Warriors – KSF 31st US Open Martial Arts Challenge is sponsored by Shaolin Institute and sanctioned by KSF (Kungfu Sanda Federation) under SWF (Shaolin World Federation), highlighting how Zen Conscious Kung Fu Sanshou Fighters, who have passionately trained for years with grit, become. The event is held on December 2nd, 2017 on the campus of Roswell Health Center, 11516 Woodstock Road, Roswell, GA 30075. more info: http://www.shaolin-world.net and 770-286-9808
I haven't heard much from Patrick Barry or Shawn Liu (Deru) in a while. But then again, I might not have been paying that much attention.

They tried to hold a regional... i dunno tournament(?) a few years back and we were literally the only other Chinese MA school to show up and we drove two hours to get there. I appreciate what he was trying to do, but where he and we are located (gulf coast) it just isn't flush with enough Kung Fu bros for something like that.

So to your point, there isn't much happening to pay attention to.

    Imagine & Beyond

Zen Master Meets AI Sophia: Bridging Zen Conscious Lifestyle With Cutting-Edge Science & Technologies
    PRESS RELEASE PR Newswire
    Sep. 12, 2018, 06:00 AM

ATLANTA, Sept. 12, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- 2Shi DeRu, the founder of SCF (Shaolin Chan Foundation), unveils his first series of documentary film production – "Imagine & Beyond" – on Sept. 28 to Oct. 1, 2018, at the Atlanta Marriott Century Center/Emory Area on 2000 Century Blvd. NE, Atlanta GA 30345. The production is an initiative of the Global Zen Consciousness Conference (www.zenconference.org) to revolutionize health care, future business operation and lifestyle.

The theme "Imagine & Beyond" represents DeRu's mission of unifying the interdisciplinary fields of consciousness research from contemporary quantum mechanics to ancient Eastern philosophies. Uniting science with Eastern philosophy is nothing new. However, this talk of quantum fields, genes, and cellular activity may seem complicated at first, but GZC will clarify how modern science and Eastern philosophy agree with and support each other.

"The ancient practice of Zen consciousness can help us lead a healthier, happier, and more harmonious life," says DeRu. "Zen teachings are supported by cutting-edge science. By uniting modern science with ancient Eastern philosophy, we can become our most optimal self. Zen can help everyone unveil their inner intelligence and become more innovative and creative. It can even help artificially intelligent robots like Sophia."

The conference will bring together some of the leading consciousness researchers in the world from the different fields of science, medicine, philosophy, AI, and spirituality. Speakers include John Hagelin, Ph. D., a Harvard-trained quantum physicist; Dr. Stuart Hameroff, Director of the Center for Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona; Venerable Yifa, a Buddhist nun who earned a Ph.D. from Yale; Liu Feng, Director of the American Holographic Research Institute. Dr. David Hanson, Founder and CEO of Hanson robotics, with his creation, Sophia and his talented team members, David Chen and Jeanne Lim will also attend. To see the full lineup of speakers, visit www.zenconference.org.

"Zen lifestyle aims to heighten consciousness, ultimately achieving a state known as 'Zen Consciousness.' This is a pure state of being that optimizes our health and awakens our inner potential, unleashing our power of imagination, innovation and creation," explained DeRu. "I have taught and shared Zen consciousness and Zen Tai Gong, which is a combination of Qi Gong and Tai Chi, with many cancer patients and patients with hypertension, diabetes, anxiety, depression, autistic disorders, obesity and many other health issues. Most of them have overcome their health issues by following the program and have become healthy again."

Zen consciousness is associated with optimal well-being. When one looks to the ancient philosophy of Buddhism, it impossible to deny that human beings are responsible for their own well-being. One's happiness is not simply the result of circumstance, coincidence, or genetics. Happiness is in one's own hands. Happiness and unhappiness are choices. In Zen practice, the approach to balancing the energy of the body and mind is to find harmony by attuning oneself with the frequencies of the universe.

The ultimate goal of the conference is to help humans connect to their own innermost intelligence by bridging the gap between the unified field theory, the holographic principle, and Zen philosophy. Additionally, new epigenetics research will be presented to elucidate how important a human being's consciousness is in determining the expression of one's genes and their health. The information provided at the conference will provide a platform for all to develop their Zen Consciousness and create an optimal life full of great potential.

In one of DeRu's Zen meditation and Tai Chi gatherings, the self-described Zen traveler explained, "Zen allows you to open your infinite mind and free yourself from 'self,' 'ego,' and your limited 'physical being.' It allows you to awaken yourself and explore your greatest potential and understand your purest inner-intelligent being within and without."

For more information, visit the GZC conference website: www.zenconference.org.
