Nonrevenge Nonwar Nontypical Kung Fu Movies

I get a bit sick and tired of the standard kung fu movie topic.

Almost invariably, a movie is about

    1. a heroic rescue
    2. revenge
    3. a secret tournament of champions
    4. a homicidal mystery
    4. all of the above.

That's why it was nice to see these kung fu movies:

    1) Circle of Iron: a walk through the phases of self-discovery

    2) Pushing Hands: a Taijiquan master finds himself in America, where he gets totally culture shocked:

    3) Gorgeous: Jackie Chan plays a rich boy who learns how to love

    Any other suggestions?

    Haven't seen that one.

    I REALLY enjoyed this movie.

Wasn't too bad, but still a bit to stereotypical in the love story department.

It has about a dozen alternate titles, but "Miracles" is Jackie Chan's tribute to Frank Capra, and definitely has a nonstandard plot.

I'll also suggest Jackie Chan's "The Big Boss", which is one of my absolute favorite Chan movies because of its novelty.

Gorgeous is pretty good. Any movie with Shu Qi is going to rate pretty highly.

An old school flick that would fall outside of your criteria is Shaolin Challenges Ninja. All the fighting is a result of a misunderstanding between the main characters. Plus, I think it is the only Shaw Brothers flick where no one dies.
    Me fail English? That's unpossible!
