    Question the Liver

Are there any exercises, herbs or other treatments to increase the function of the liver?

everything that Kung Lek said plus avoid situations which are most likely to spark off anger in you too. Excess anger and resentment are classic aetiologies in Chinese Medicine for Stagnating the Liver Qi and causing Liver upset. If Liver disharmonies go without treatment or care then they have a nasty habit of progressing into nastier disharmonies and causing even more damage internally. Of vcourse the Liver is very imporatnt qi-qise for martial arts because ythe main function of the Liver from a TCM point of view is to maintain a smooth flow of Qi throughout the body. When the qi doesn't flow smoothly the main aereas it can effect are the Lungs as in some asthmatic conditions where the internal pathway of the Liver passes through the lungs and thus constricts the chest region and the Stomach and spleen where by invading the Stomach and Spleen qi it can cause the reversal of the food going downwards in the body and create belching, nausea, and generally for the qi to rebell in the stomach and bring about vomiting whenever you eat. For women of course long term Liver Qi Stagnation can cause all sorts of gynaecilogical problems espcially a common one of infertilityin women. Liver upset is always a classic indication of people who suffer with persistent Migraines too.
Herbs and acupuncture are particularly useful/successful in terating it. If I recall rightly the Bear form of the traditional 5 Animal frolics Qi gong set is for regulating Liver Qi.
