    Counterbalance

    Lots of negativity coming from CLF in this forum.
    I just wanted to inject a counterbalance.

    Choy Lay Fut is really extraordinary. Of course, it can make strong people even stronger, but it can also make the "weaker" into the strong. I view myself in the latter category.

    I see it happening a lot, especially with the people the the little Kung-Fu club I started here. I mean, these people start off with absolute zero coordination, flexibility, or balance and give them a month or so, an they are rock and rolling with the 10 elements! They hit the pads incredibly hard, and generate power they never knew they had before.

    One guy in the club has arthritis in his left knee, so he can't make his stances all that low, but he is able to twist his waist and drop into his legs to generate power. He used to be all stiff, but now he is all limber and can hit harder than me!

    Any other CLF folks have anecdotes about students who over came huge obstacles through CLF?

    Hey 123

    I suffered a serious slipped disc, was almost rushed into surgery (I backed out after being told the success rate) and was told by my doctors that I would never do martial arts again.

    And now I do CLF. 'Nuff said. =)

    wow. how long did it take before your back got well enough for you to do CLF?

    A person in our group has I think a herniated disk, and I think he said that the dr. was giving steriod injections for it. Did you have to go through that as well?

    I had to do some serious physical therapy. No steroid or cortisone yet. I had to walk with a cane for a long time. To tell you the truth, waking up some days is agony, especially in cold weather. But its infinitely better than it used to be. I've had doctors from Beijing, who specialized in Chinese Sports injuries tell me that I had to stop for good and just do normal working out and strecthing. I just didn't have it in me to do it. Although they are surprised at my progress, they say my back will just degrade within months. That was over 4 years ago. I'll push it as far as it will go but it hasn't hit me as hard again, like it did when they rushed me to the hospital back in 1994. I think the twisting is actually helping a lot. =)

    I think the doctors here in my area underestimate the value of twisting the waist/trunk rotations.
    This guy with the herniated disk's wife said that it used to be painful to watch him walk, but since he started CLF and started doing the waist twisting, it fixed his posture, and his walking looks normal.

    I've heard people say that doing martial arts actually changes the way you walk. I've not really noticed or paid attention to that. Do you think it is true? If so, how in particular does it change?

    tho this question is for k-no but i'll butt in...
    yup i think it's very much true...i think this happens with anyone who is into any sort of physical excercise(be it MA too), they r more healthy internally n it looks at their face...they r more confident about themselves(looking good, security lots of reasons)

    Hi tkdwarrior,
    I definitely agree with the whole mental-physical side of things. I'm just wondering if there is a anatomical structural explanation, as in, what martial arts movements would affect walking or whatever daily movements.

    One example I just thought of, I knew this guy who did karate and taekwondo for a long time. When he started CLF, the whole idea of using rigid arm strength goes right out the window. So we have a lot of loose swinging arm exercises, to help us warm up and prepare for delivering techniques with full, loose-relaxed-waisting power. ANyways, he says his arms swing more just in daily walking ever since clf training.

    But I never notice these things...

    It's funny you should mention that, I do happen to have my Ramones CDs with me here in Hong Kong (along with a bunch of my other punk rock favorites).

    what famous movies have you played in/ or working on?
    would be cool to look out for it. do you do clf in it, or just basic holiwood MA? Donnie yen is cool. love his films

    Punk rock????? mmmm No offence, but Americans can never compete with the Brittish oldies like the Pistols, Subhumans, etc. I still have an old vynil lp with pistols on one side and NYDolls on other. I hardly ever listened to the NYDolls side , but the pistols side is so scratched from ovelistening

    guess there is just that thing with the Brittish Accent and Punk Rock

    I'm working on "Twins Effect" right now. It's just a small part. I just jump around a lot, hardly any fighting. During the audition, Donnie was interested in my Choy Lay Fut since he did a bit of CLF as a youth.

    But anyway, I hate to break it to yah, but the Ramones invented Punk Rock...

    Lets face it.....
    the yanks (no offence intended ya'all) are good at hip hop and rock.

    the Britts are good at Punk Rock, Gothic stuff and some other underground thingies

    The Germans and the Dutch are the Best at Techno and Industrial (and pornos ),

    while the Swedish are good at pop and hardcore death metal.

    I saw a Korian Punk rock band somewhere on the net before. Must be pretty interesting. Then there was once on rippleys I think, some chinese band who palyed their whole gig upside down.
