A strike straight inwards and upwards to Jiquan (Heart 1 - Summit's Spring) can be very painful and potentially dangerous.
There are a great many methods of striking and seizing this point found within Taolu (Forms) ---- that is if one takes the time to look, most don't.

In lau gar a general hit to the armpit can be very painful (having expeienced this myself several times)
And this strike can be useful in self defence simply becaue of the vast collection of nerves there.
