Me ... 8-section brocade ... this morning ... to loosen up a stiff back and, erm, get things moving. Funny you should ask today, it was the 1st time I'd done any breathing exercises this month.

I'm no chi gung expert ... most info I have comes from reading, a little from class.
8 Section Brocade was recommended to me as a sort of "warmup before warmups" as it starts the blood moving and gets the breath deeper, also helps coordinate body movements in general. I also practice it before kung fu class in the evenings.
I've read that a morning chi kung should incorporate movement with breathing (rather than sitting meditation or standing post). i.e., tai chi form - which slowly increases blood circulation after a night's sleep. And that a more energetic chi kung should be practiced after the hottest part of midday (1:30-3:00) - when the chi is fully expanded? something like that.
But most people only have time for morning/evening practice so a full day's exercise schedule wouldn't work for them.
