A 40-year-old drug addict who allegedly stole beer and dog food from an Amsterdam supermarket was chased from the store and was kicked to death by at least four staff.
Anna Roos was chased from the Dirk van der Broek store by employees and died later of internal bleeding and injuries sustained during a beating, according to a police statement.
Slightly-built Roos was knocked to the ground where she was kicked and punched by a group of people, including four young employees and an unknown number of bystanders, the statement said.
Police said they were questioning six people over the killing.
It was the second confrontation in three months in Amsterdam between alleged thieves and supermarket staff.
In August, two workers of the Albert Heijn supermarket chain chased a knife-wielding man who tried to hold up a store and wrestled him to the ground. He was also beaten by the employees.
The two were prosecuted for excessive violence and fined –£1,200 by an Amsterdam judge.
Dutch Prince Bernhard, the father of Queen Beatrix, paid the fine because he thought the men were unfairly punished after doing a good deed.
The latest incident sparked angry reactions from local residents who accused Bernhard of promoting violence. In an official statement from the Royal House, Bernhard rejected the claim and said woman’s killing could not be compared with the earlier incident.
