I read a manual on pai da gong and it is essenially a series of breathing exercises. After several months of training, one begin the body hardening process of clubing oneself with a hard stick. So, this is an internal strengthening process..
tie bu shan (iron shirt) is an external training exercise. According to the 72 art manuals (DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME, USER ASSUME ALL RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIS OWN ACTIONS) one wraps his torso up in a soft cloth. Then rub against the cloth (skin abrasion and leading to callus most likely). Describe some more contact hardening stuffs. Designed to strengthen the bones. Basically, place the body under external stress to promote bone growth. Training period: three years.
There you have it, one internal and other external. Practicing in a boxing ring and taking a lot of punches will pretty much get the same result of iron shirt minus the callus (toughening of the skins). You can just rub one skins a lot with your finger to get toughen it up should one really want to do this.
