Would like to visit Shaolin temple - any advice??

Hello all,
I have currently moved to Shanghai from Canada and would like to go visit a Shaolin Temple and maybe do some training. I have heard some horror stories about scams and rip off artists trying to take advantage of foreigners. Does anybody have any advice of where to go or how not to get ripped off??

take a look at www.russbo.com he's got some good pointers for those who are gonna make the trip and be sure to read Gene's stuff about his experiences there just to keep it all level.

finally, if you are gonna go, then go and keep an open mind. (even after you have read the good and the bad)

Shaolin Special 2003 - this issue was designed for people who are looking to travel to Shaolin, complete with advice, who's who, a map, all sorts of details. And the research is only a year old, so it's still pretty accurate, even down to the bus routes.

I caught some criticism for making this issue so oriented to travelling to Shaolin, but really it was just a FAQ for situations like this...

I don't even do carbs like that but last trip, I was luvvin those noodles!! when you're in middle of nowhere and working like a mofo and there's nothing else...trust me...you gonna be luvin the noodles youreself...even if there is 300g of freakn carbohydrate ...ok, so maybe just occasionally

To eat dried noodles in China is a crime. You can get fresh hand-pulled noodles almost everywhere in China. The spicy noodle soups in Dengfeng are a culinary joy - I can't even go near Chinese food for months after going to China. The Chinese food here sucks in comparison and I live near some of the world's greatest Chinatowns.

The funny thing about Shaolin, and I mention this in that Shaolin Special I mentioned above, is that you can eat really badly at the school canteen. I mean horribly. Most tours just do what's easy for food, and that's these god-awful tourist cafeterias. If you go into the streets of Dengfeng, especially the night market, you can eat like a king for very cheap. MMMmmmm, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

Hey since we're on the food topic, I LOVE Chinese food! But I can't find any really good recipes. I've done a couple from scratch but they just don't taste right. I made some pretty good kung pao chicken the other night but it was using one of those dinner packet mix thingies...

If anyone has any good chinese recipes send em my way!

Szechuan, Beijing, Cantonese?

Well having an interest in Chinese culture I would be VERY interested in truly authentic recipes. So far all I've found is Chinese this and Chinese that, with no background whatsoever. So when you ask about what regions I'd be interested it's kind of overwhelming. Knowing the origin of a specific recipe would be great though, why don't you surprise me?

Dengfeng is the gateway to Songshan. Songshan is the central sacred mountain of China. There are amazing temples, natural sites, archeologic digs, all sorts of stuff.

And great mutton noodle soup.
