How do you make a wing chun dummy?

Hello,
I want a wing chun dummy but I just can't efford it, so can anyone show me detail plans of how to make a wing chun dummy please.

The book by Yip Chun and Leung Ting called
"116 wing tsun dummy techniques" has some
detailed explaination about the construction of the dummy and a fold out diagram on the back
of a poster of Yip Man .
also if you go to the wingchun.org site,they have
some plans and instructions.
I built my own dummy.It took a few weeks to do,
but I saved a lot of money.For the body, I went to a lumber yard that sells telephone poles.
I asked them for a section of pine about 9" in diameter and five and a half feet long.make sure
the piece you get has been kiln dried.this gets rid of all the sap and moisture.make sure it doesn't have creosote on it either.that is a gummy
tar like substance used to weather proof the wood.
If you're not handy with tools,or you don't have all the tools you think you'll need,try talking to a local high school.sometimes they do carpentry projects for the experience,charging you for materials only.
I drilled the holes,squared them out,built the leg,finished the body,and built the support frame myself.I hired a carpenter to make the arms on a
wood lathe out of oak.it cost me $70 for the arms.
every part of the dummy was oak except for the body,which was pine.all in all i wound up spending
about $300 in materials,and about 2 and a half weeks of labor.It turned out really good.
just take your time and measure everything at least twice before you cut or drill.the more attention to detail,the nicer it will turn out.

thats what im doing. a light pole is really good. but you need to realise that the duumy should be made to your size,ie arm length, hieght.

Ok, first you need a piece of 8 inch diameter PVC pipe. This wil have an outside diamter of 8.6 inches. Perfect, ah?

Second, find a place to make the arms and legs for you. I used Asheville woodcrafters, but I'm in the States. There is a place in england I know of I will try to find it for you...

There are various places online with dimensions, however, these all vary so make one that is good for you. Make sure you draw out blueprints before you ever make your first pencil mark on the pipe or cut.

Good luck. Remember, PVC pipe is 100 times easier to cut through than a wooden trunk.

I made mine even cheaper! (Being a tight-arse Scotsman)

Its made from 6 2"x4"'s all screwed and glued together to make the body.

It was then planed down to make a semi-circular shape.

The arms are also 2"x4"'s cut to size and planed to shape.

The whole thing is mounted on my garage wall with 4 slotted 2"x4"'s.

Its a bit difficult to explain in words but I'll take some photos of it soon and post them here.

How to make a Wing Chun dummy- First proclaim yourself grandmaster, open a school in a strip mall, teach all 3 forms the first week, then dive right into full gor sao sparring.

seriously though, the dummy should be made according to the dimensions of yourself. You'll get sounder practice out of it.

My sifu, had his made for him, it is not a wing chun wooden man per se, it has 4 arms a leg and a head.

depending on the style, the dummy may be different. For instance, the Choy Li Fut Mook Jong has a spring loaded arm on the top used for pull down and trapping techniuqe development whil the wing chun dummy does not have this device.

The Sil Lum wooden man is differnt than these two and then there is the "grinder" dummy of Hark fu moon as was shown in a recent article in one of the Kung Fu mags (can't remeber which! KFQ or IKF)

The trick is to make it strong enough that you don't break the arms, if you are going to make one.

Use of soft wood is not recommended and damp or oil soaked wood is no good either.
