Well - it's tough to verify exactly what "natural" movement is for a zombie or fireball-hurling demon. But I like the way the new ones act like real predators: crouch, leap, rebound, etc. And the rate of speed varies, too - they're not just moving around at running speed the whole time.

GDA - Yeah, it's dangerous to start a conversation with a Linux geek. Especially if you express some interest, because then you trigger the evangelism reflex.

    The obsession with penguins...

    ok tak ....

my buddy made me go look at his rig the other day and i told him that if he started preaching to me i was gonna slap him in the mouth. he said shut up ***** i aint gonna have to say a god ****ed thing you gonna see for yourself. he loaded up ut2k4 and i watched his inferior machine do things i wouldnt dream of.

now i just need to decide between mandrake and slackware. my buddy is really pushing slackware, but i hear mandrake is more newbie friendly. what do you recommend?

I gotta admit the animations are nice, but the AI is pretty simple. Most of the stuff is scripted which makes good for a once or twice through...

I like the game, but not for $50, maybe I'm just an old **** now

how far are you into it? i think it gets better as you go. i guess im just about done which kinda sucks. especially considering i have only played the single player about 3 nights.

you try out multiplayer yet? a lot of fun if your into the quake style play. not my favorite mp shooter but i'll definately be playing it off and on for a long time.

Gwahaha @ ut2k4! You should see it on a dual opteron machine with a gig of dual-channel ram then.

I definitely DISrecommend slackware, particularly for a new-to-linux user. Reasons: installer isn't great, there's no built-in package management system for easily updating your software, many things have to be compiled from scratch (PITA for a new user), other things along those lines.

You have to be wary, though - distributions for linux geeks are like styles for martial artists - every one will insist his is the REAL ULTIMATE one, and everybody else's sucks.

Mandrake is OK, Fedora/Redhat is OK, SuSE is OK.

Slackware and Gentoo tend to attract geeks with too much time and too many extra cpu cycles on their hands.

Oh, and Debian is the REAL ULTIMATE. But the installer isn't so friendly.

BTW, I'm still waiting for my doom3 linux binaries to be released, and trying to get the windows ver running under emulation in the meantime.

that's a little bit of overkill me thinks, but then again there is no such thing as overpowered hardware.

i got a copy of mandrake sitting on my desk now that a my work buddy gave me. slackware might be something ill be interested in later, but i need something with a good installer and as little compiling as possible. im a little embarrassed to admit that i really don't know what "recompiling your kernel" means. i have a very abstract idea of what it means, but i have no idea what's involved in acomplishing the task.

it doesnt sound like something i want to just pop in and hope for the best, so im gonna wait for my other buddy to come over and help me for a few beers this weekend. should be interestng.

I would take recompiling a kernel lightly. Basically you are rebuilding the beating heart of the operating system.

yeah i watched my buddy do a lil bit of that tonight. he only made a change or two but i got the idea. he brought up a gui to do it though. the way i understand it, it's like editing your registry but with hardware instead of software.

Not quite. The kernel is the very heart of the OS (like the kernel in a seed). When you recompile the kernel, it is usually to enable or disable features at the lowest level of the OS, sometimes actually altering the kernal code itself. In terms on Windoze, it would be like altering and rebuilding kernel.exe (though Windoze allows you to do it through kernel modules). It has the potential to completely screw up your system.

    windows makes you lazy.

until now a kernal only meant that if you received an error involving mr. kernal it was time to format.

Well, I understand Bill's vision - to try and bring computing to the masses (and make a lot of money while doing so). However, this has also resulted in a lot of computer professionals who are dumbed down by the ease of working with Windows because Windows hides a lot of the gritty stuff from you. In a way it is good that it does, but as you said it also results in a certain degree of laziness.

Disclaimer: no offence intended to any Windows-specialists
