Held a praying mantis in my hand today

I live in Ontario, Canada and I only found out recently that praying mantis insects live on this continent. One of my friends found one and I held it in my hands. They don't bite, and they don't fly off when you catch them. They are so cool !

We have them in the states, too. I don't think they're indigenous to any one specific region.

Always good to stay in touch with nature and the animals. (well, insects too)

I have about an hour of mantis kills on video. Spent all last summer videoing them. It is cool.

    a hour of mantis kills?

Talk about your insect snuff films. Our copy editor, Gary Shockley, just returned from Indiana where he said there were tons of mantids fornicating everywhere. While he was there, he was sending me photos of mantis porn regularly.

Mantises invade Indiana! Poor Mantises--never had a chance, all those armed Hoosiers.

Bloody right that the praying mantis is all over in this state. It's like Wild Kingdom or something around here.

The big green one is the most common, but you can find many types. Talked to "the bug doctor" (a Purdue professor who goes on local radio for a weekly talk about bugs--yeah, I know, it's Indiana, what can I say) about the mantis. Fascinating creature it is.

    Mantises in Indiana

Okay, for those interested, here's the link.
A couple of caveats. Not all images are of mantids.
Some involve family. As for those with mantids,
they may depict violent or intimate acts.

The heck they don't bite (or pinch or something)! Well, I don't know about the Canadian variety, but I had one take a hold of a finger when I was a kid!
