    MS Needs You!!!

Only if you are from the north though. You see... Meat Shake has never seen snow.
    ...
Well, twice, but the first time I was too young to remember, and the second time I was too drunk to remember. In any case, I dont know much about snow. What to watch out for, tips on driving in it, etc, etc, etc....
So, all you snow dwellers, please help. Just give me any random info you see as appropriate.

um.... bridges freeze first. if you have rwd vehicle a pair of michelin blizzex tires would be good. heck even on fwd vechiles. and just go slow and give plenty of room. thats all i can think off. i had a porsche 944 and one year real bad snow, had the michelin BX tires. was driving through snow mounds and stuff that went up to the parking lights. it was hot.

    Yellow snow = lemon flavoring.

Snow is easier to drive in than ice. N Dallas/ Oklahoma gets pelted every winter with massive sleet / ice storms. I don't know if you've been in one of those or not, but if you have, then snow will be a piece of cake.

the same rules for driving in gravel apply to driving in snow.

RWD = Turn into the fishtail

FWD = Turn out of the fishtail

If you get stuck in a blizzard, keep your tail pipe clear or the exhaust will creep up into the car.

There are as many different types of snow as there are styles of MA. Each one has a different character and will act differently on the road.

Snowball making is an art unto itself.

    Ice Sux.

Got stuck on a dirt road one night coming home from work at the bar.

I knew it was icy so was taking it easy but got to an uphill slope in the road and slowly came to a stop as my drive wheels began spinning on the ice. It was raining so there was a layer of water over the ice.

After multiple attemps to back down and go up again to know avail I started trying to put stuff under the tires. After a couple hours of this I was so frustrated I kicked the back tire.

The truck's (81 Mazda 2wd) tail end moved about 3 inches.

I stood there and looked at it for a few seconds then slammed into the side of the truck w/ my body and it moved about a foot.

So, over the course of the next 15 minutes I pushed the truck around 180 degrees till it was facing back downhill the way I had come from.

Got in, drove out and took the paved road around the the apartment.

Listen, after the first significant snow storm, find a big parking lot that is empty, play around for an hour or so until you learn how your car handles in the snow. In real life, drive slow, even if you have a 4x4, it helps you go, doesn't help you stop... I can't tell you how many times I've been passed on the highway by a 4x4 only to see them in about 5 minutes in the ditch or flipped over or something.

    Snow is cold

    Ice is cold

Wimmins like to be warmed up when there is coldness

    therefor

    Ice and Snow = Good

    Oh, lol OSO, thats funny.

I've got a list of stories like that.

My parent's driveway is sorta steep, not too bad. Anyway, I got about 3/4 of the way up after a Noreaster (freezing rain and snow storm that left a buttload of moisture) anywho, couldn't get it much further up, so just parked there. Got out of the car, busted my ass, got up, slammed the door of the car, and it started sliding down the driveway, went about 15-20 ft. before it caught itself on a snowbank....

Tune in tomorrow, when NP tells you about the near miss with several semis.

...used to work at a resort as head of maintenance. so, it was our job to keep the 6 miles of road and who knows how many miles of sidewalk and steps clear for the guests.

used to be there for days at a time during the bigger snows.

one night after several days there me and my assistant decided we needed to be sitting in a bar for a while.

he had just gotte a little Geo, 4wd thingie, I think they are made by Suzuki, anyway, so he lets me drive and seeing as how it's about midnight on a wednesday and there's about 18" of snow, the roads were mostly empty...

so, i go to fooling around in the middle of the 5 lane and get her to spinning

    all the way around

    several times

not too worried as there are big drifts at the side of the road and Jason never cared too much about dinging his car up

but then we notice that a big tour bus has come around the curve and is bearing down on us.

somehow, mostly by luck, I managed to spin by the bus and slam into the snow bank.

took us about 10 minutes to lift the Geo out of the snow bank and finish the trip into town....slowly.

    There's something called "black ice."

Just because it doesn't look like there's ice on the ground doesn't mean there's not.

The advice to practice in a parking lot was good advice. Make sure you're not practicing in a parking lot where there are light poles in the middle of it, or if there are, make sure you are away from them. You need to find out what happens in different situations:

What happens if you turn the wheels and the car keeps going straight?

What happens if your wheels lock up? Do you have ABS (anti-lock braking, not the ab muscle)?

What happens if you're going 15-30mph and you turn the wheel hard and pull up on the e-brake? (this is a good place to remember my advice about not practicing around light poles in the middle of parking lots).

What happens when you try to accelerate and you just sit there and spin your tires?

It's better to find this stuff out in an empty parking lot than behind somebody on the street when you try to stop but can't.

Yes.Please practice. I have taken to driving a very old car durring the winter because of all the eyots who move to Colorado and think that pretty white stuff is more of a toy than a road hazard. And please don't try to pass, cut-off other cars, or make drastic lane changes if the road even looks wet. The sodium chloride they put down to keep snow from accumulating is just as slick as ice.
