    I'm a mung-bean eating hippy

So while on my recent health binge, I decided to buy a juicer. Couple of commercial links. Anyway, not only did I get a juicer, it came with wheatgrass seeds so I've decided I might get into growing and *gulp!* drinking wheatgrass. I've never tried it, but my wife has. Apparently it's another "acquired" taste . I'll see how I go. Anyone into it? Comments?

Oh yeah, thanks for the initial recommendation a month ago or so Ka (?). It was on his advice that I looked into it and decided to give it a go. Cheap juicer and looks the goods.

I drink an ounce or two if someone else pays for it. I find the taste varies, after all, it's grown fresh and unprocessed. If I'm lucky it's not too bitter and even has a sweet aftertaste. I never could tell if it did anything for me. There are tons of claims, but the longest continual span of time I regularly drank the stuff was about a week and a half (mung-bean eating hippy gf's can do that to ya... she paid for it each time at the juice bar).

However, I can attest that fresh juice is a wonderfull thing! The fresher and rawer you consume your foods, the more nutrients can be absorbed into your system. I tend to water down my fuit juices a bit, though, especially the citrus juices. Veggie juices I tend to mix to reduce bitterness and get more natural sweetness into 'em. Carrots are GREAT for adding sweetness to veggie juice. Also, if you toss some stevia leaves into your veggie juices, they can add some sweetness, tho' there's a weird aftertaste you may need to get used to.

Hopefully you'll be able to keep up the juicing past the initial phase of the brand new shiny thing. ::grin::

I used to drink wheat grass when I worked at the "Psychic Eye Bookshop" in AZ. It doesn't taste THAT bad, sheesh. I too could not tell if it did anything to me, but I drank it anyways.

Yeah, I got my wife an electric chopping-style juicer a couple of years ago but we never use it because it's a pain in the ass to clean. This one looks easy, like our pasta machine. I'm looking forward to doing a bit of juicing with it.

Kelvin, thanks for the link. Although it's a bit marketese and unscientamatific for me - I'm not that much of a hippy yet (despite the metric system Iron ). But yeah, those are the sorts of anecdotes that I've read about it. Wheatgrass seeds are cheap near my home anyway, so it can't hurt to give it a shot. AUD$22/10 kg. If I don't like wheatgrass, I'll just use it as a regular juicer. But I'll stick with the wheatgrass for a while to see how it goes.

Wheatgrass juice tastes like arse, but I have heard lots of good things about it. (LOL at Eyebrows' "unbiased" link!)

Let us know how you go with it, Toby.

BTW - what does this have to do with mung beans?!

Go Carrot Ginger and WG,peel/core an apple or 2 a banana (or whatever in season) into Blender with OJ and your C G WG juice = good start to the morning.
Personally I don't drink the stuff (WG) straight but the mixes are up to what fresh fruits and veg you have at hand.If you end up not liking the WG the fresh Vegie jucie is worth it alone.
    Growing it, isn't a problem I have 3 pots on rotation.Seed over here costs about $2+c /kg
    Enjoy

Maybe I should've said "tree-hugging". Dunno, it just came to me. I guess hippies eat mung beans, hippies (and more recently trendy execs) drink wheatgrass juice -> title. Although I have been eating a lot of beans lately - soy, lentil, lima, etc. My wife's been putting them in salad humouring my attempts to get healthy. They're not as bad as their reputation, which I derived from watching The Young Ones and Neil years ago. Funny, I always wanted to be Vyvyan. Anyway, the various beans make quite a nice salad with lettuce, capsicum, cheese, tuna, avocado, whatever.

Now you've made me salivate . Sounds good. I also found a bunch of juice bars that have ingredients online. Shouldn't be hard to extrapolate amounts to make nice juices.

Yep. From what I read yesterday mould grows in warm humid conditions mostly. WA's always had a reputation for dry heat, so hopefully it'll be even easier over this side.

BTW, thanks for the recommendation on the juicer . I found one for $89 here in Perth. 1/2 hr later (after I'd ordered it) I found one at bondiwheatgrass (or something) for $80 . Oh well. Still, most online ones were more than that.

Hey Tobes, can you pm me some links for the good juicers that you found? Also, don't you need a special kind of juicer for wheatgrass?
