    ganglion

a friend of mine has a ganglion on her wrist, that is a cyst of fluid that appears for no reason, is large like a marble, painful and unsightly.

i was wondering what the TCM way of treating this condition might be? i was amazed just now to search the whole forum and find no mention of this problem which is fairly common, and quite a problem if you are a martial artist who is engaging in locks, strikes etc all of which may hit the ganglion itself.

    any ideas?

I don't have any advice for you but I was disapointed that the article didn't have a picture. So I found one on Google. Here it is: http://www.imi.org.uk/jun1997/gang.jpg

I had a similar problem (although not as nasty as that picture) a couple years ago, and it lasted for several years. My ganglion was in the center, on top of my right wrist. At times it was very painful, especially when my wrist would pop out of its socket while practicing chin na. I know the wrist is not a "socket", but whatever was going on, that's what it felt like. So, I finally get myself to a doctor (Western practicioner), and he tells me to get a thick, heavy, hardcover book and smash my wrist to pop the cyst. Yeah, that was his solution. Anyway, I tried a couple of times, but the pain was so great I eventually gave up. Now it's gone. I don't know where, but it's just not there anymore. I still have problems with my wrist because of it though.

I know that doesn't answer your question, but I thought I'd give my story.

    A suggestion..

Put a bag of crushed ice over the bump to desenstitize. And then lance that sucker through with a sterile needle. Squeeze the fluid out. Wipe the area down with an antibacterial swab and cover with a bandage.

i got one on my left wrist/hand area. it comes and goes. sometimes it hurts and other times it doesn't. my doctor said they used to call them holy cists. they called 'em them that because they would slap them with the heaviest book they could find. usually a bible. i tried the " slapping it" approach. i beat the heck out of my hand and it hurt to bad. got someone else to hit it harder and never noticed a difference. it finnally went away and hasn't came back yet.
