    Catching an arrow

I was watching Ripleys Believe it or Not for a short time, and saw some karate guy throwing kicks, etc. I started watching, and they mentioned him as a "Living legend" in japan. Ok, so this guy is semi famous? His name was Terry Briant.

    He then caught an arrow.

He was standing a good distance away from the shooter, who shot the arrow at him. He missed the first time, but got it the second. He then did it blindfolded, missing the first and catching the second.

Anyway, just something I found semi interesting :P

ah the good ol arrow catching trick.

never heard of him...but then, I've never heard of a lot of japanese celebs.

Now, if that was a broadhead coming off a 70+lb test compound, I'd be impressed!

But somehow, I think the bow at best was a recurve and not sure of the wallop.

I dunno, I could be flagging on my big book of parlour tricks knowledge.

I would actually be more impressed with the archer who could fire those arrows in roughly the same spot every time and avoid hitting the guy at the same time

    I second that!

Better yet, wasn't there some guy that used to catch bullets with his teeth on that show? Oh wait...that was "That's Incredible"

I saw a show once where they revealed how they do the catching bullets the teeth trick. He doesn't actually catch it.

there was a guy that caught paintballs. he did about 50/50. 50% broke from impact in his hand the other 50% he caught. not impossible. might be a parlor trick.

actually that's more of just a waste of good paintball ammo.

first, there is no inherent danger to catching paintballs, even if you do get hit, what's the worst you will get? A welt? Maybe?

second, use them to play paintball and then catch them when they are fired at you so you can capture the flag!

more of a failing in the paintball design than any sort of parlour trick at the level of the shaolin circus or other angry white pajamas types.

as an aside, the bullet catching was really more of bullt stopping with a plate in the mouth. The marksman would shoot the plate.

There is one guy who got really famous for this trick, but later he died by falling off a cliff in the Alps and now his name eludes me.

me and my buddy did the arrow thing in highschool. we never built up to drawing the bow (recurve) back all the way, but we did stand about 50 feet apart and they shot straight. we thought it was pretty impressive anyway. we built up to this in just a couple hours .... a couple days and we would have been drawing all the way back. learning to walk on my hands was harder.

kl .... dude ... have you ever been shot with a paintball bare skin? its not gonna maybe welt its gonna maybe bust your ass open. sure it's not going to cause more than surface damage, but that **** stings.

yep, i've played plenty of paintball gda. and in canada, where it is cold and the balls don't break so easy.

they leave a red mark, a welt and occaisionally a minor bruise.
But seriously, tey are no where near the danger level, or level of difficulty required for say...oh, bullets and arrows.

oh thats right your canadian. i think you guys up north got thicker skin or something. plus i'm a big *****.

i've never actually "played" paintball, but i did "play" stand there and let someone shoot me with one so i could see what it feels like. it hurt.

it didnt discourage me from the game, just had a lack of opportunities.

I'm still shocked that people tell me they don't wear cups when they play paintball.

I dont wear cups in most sporting events, period. They are uncomfortable...None of them fit me.

Seriously though, I tried wearing a cup once in paintball...I never did again after that one time. I guess I need to get hit there first.

LOL at all these 'but could he do that with a 70lb compound' comments! Could you do it with a pea-shooter...? ... Blindfold?

Whatever you say about Japanese culture they don't give out those 'Living/Cultural Treasure' titles out to any old hobo... could it be that he has actually trained for a long time in the trad arrow-cutting skill? Surely not! It was on American TV, so it's a skill-less fraud right?

    Train harder.
its safe to say that I train some martial arts. Im not that good really, but most people really suck, so I feel ok about that - Sunfist

How fast was the arrow moving? I've caught baseballs travelling at or over 100mph before and tennis players return serves in the 130+mph range.

to catch a baseball or hit a tennis ball with a raquet you need to be infront of the target (ball) to catch an arrow you need to time you hand to meet the side of the moving arrow. much harder. i read a book that claimed that catching arrows was part of traditional ninjitsu training. never done ninjitsu myself. any one?
