    Unbelievable....

    http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/asiapc...ake/index.html

As of now nearly 12,000 found dead, an expected 150,000 homeless, injured, and dying.
    Terrible.

"More than 4,500 people have been reported dead in Sri Lanka. Most of them, authorities said, were in the eastern district of Batticaloa. Thousands were missing and more than a half million displaced."

Yep, pretty bad... My best friend is vacationing in Thailand right now and he loves to scuba dive - I'm really hoping he wasn't near the affected areas. Still waiting on a message from him...

A friend of my wife's has family in Sri Lanka ... we're still waiting to hear from them, too...

We're almost in the same state we were in during 9/11 when my sister still worked in the financial area of NY.

    Yeah , that's pretty grim.

I've got a friend near Bali, but I think the tsunami went the other way...

So many people died in Sri Lanka and India, and that's 1600 km away from the epicentre of the quake... they reckon the wave was 6 m high and reached 500 km/hr (about 300 mph)...

The next big one in Tokyo is overdue and the seismologists say if it's as big as the one in Niigata a couple of months ago which was only 6.1 (compared to this monster in Indonesia of 8.9) there'll be at least 20,000 dead...

Mat, from the first floor of an old wooden building... Must go and turn the gas taps off...

If you follow chinese astrology, it's the year of the wood monkey. Here's an excerpt from chineseastrology.com-

Monkey years have also brought their share of natural disasters, as the high-strung Yang+ Monkey ushers in it's naughty mix of deception and environmental temper-tantrums.

A friend of mine is over there right now. Her and her husband thought it would be cool to re-do their wedding in the manner that it would be done in her country - so they went to bangladesh for the ceremony. Since she's originally from there, all of her family is there as well. I haven't heard from her yet, but hope she is okay.

Well, we found out that my wife's friends family are all OK and my friend just arrived back in Los Angeles today. So much relief on our end, however, the death and displacement toll continues to rise.

It's really difficult to conceive of the affected lives of so many, esp. today in our time of quick and available communication of info.

    What I heard;

The fishes were jumping out of the water, because they sensed the earth quake under the ocean.

Some theories said the India sub continent slammed into China, thus formed the Himalaya mountain ridges or the roof of the world. Therefore, there were always pressures to be relieved as earth quakes in south west China.

The earth quake was felt thruout southwest China.

Including Yun Nan province, which is my father's homeland.

The tidal waves were so high, not seen in centuries.

    This is what I heard.

The entire island of Sumatra was moved 100 feet as well.

What got me choked up was watching the vids on the news. I was watching this crowd of people, each hanging on to the next in a doorway, while the waters and debris rushed past.

And then one broke off, then the next, and the next, and the next...

    EDIT:
There is a list of on-scene commentary & relief agencies here.
