    heating protein powder?

lately I have been having a cup of oatmeal for breakfast with a scoop of vanilla protein powder mixed in.

it's delicious, but am I compromising the protein by heating it?

I've heard that heating protein powder breaks down the amino acids. But who knows at what temperature this happens at. I sure don't.

On one hand, I've done the oatmeal thing a lot in the past. Actually did it to the point that I can't eat prot-meal without supressing a gag response.

On the other hand, I left a bottle of Surge in the car for a week during the hottest days of summer. That bottle tasted decidedly different.

I think protein powder generally follows the same recommendations as nutrasweet when it comes to heat (especially considering some protein powders contain some kind of sugar replacement).
    In other words:
Tossing some equal in your coffee tends to be okay if your coffee's not that hot for more than say 15~20 min; but hot sugar free gum that's been sitting in a scalding hot car all day = not so okay.

It's practically certain that the truckman would be knocked unconscious. He might die of brain concussion or a broken neck.

So long as you're not microwaving/cooking the protein for too long, I don't forsee too much denaturing.

I'd have to research it, but I heard in a lecture last week that protein "cooks" at 343K, so you're probably safe. I doubt you could eat 343K oatmeal, although it may reach that high while cooking. So maybe mix it in after it's cooked.

Things I've mixed protein powder with that work:

Milk, yoghurt, various homemade protein bars.

Things I've mixed protein with that don't work:

    Juice, water.

    Oatmeal would work I guess.

Why would protein be effected by the heat? Some other components in the mix maybe, but not protein. You grill your steaks and chicken, boil your eggs etc, don't you? Do they loose protein in the process?

If you think it might happen, just add the protein afterwards. And while you're at it, grate some fresh apples there. Yummy! It takes your oatmeal on a whole new level!

yea, protein is changed in cooking meat and becomes less bioavailable, I believe. That's why I asked.

I add toasted pecans, a little ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg.... mmmmmmmmM. Dried cherries are good too.

mmmm...sushi...we've got the best little sushi place here: Wasabi

Ironically, owned and operated by a chinese family.

but, dang good sushi and they have the Mokokawa Pearl Saki too.
