Thread: current faves?

    Thumbs up current faves?

i'd normally liked asian movies on the slightly sillier side (jackie chan, etc.) but last week, my friend at umvd let me borrow "purple butterfly" (starring the GORGEOUS zhang ziyi ) and it's such a gorgeous, tragic movie...it kinda reminds of japanese films like "dolls" and "last life in the universe" with it's slow pace and amazing visuals...if u want more info, u can go here and check em out....i REALLY love "purple butterfly". lemme know if u have any other recommendations.

Fulltime Killer ~ serious, semi action movie. A new assassin in the asian market has his sights set on the number one spot. Starring Andy Lau and Takashi Soromachi

Pistol Opera ~ a film by Japanese director Suzuki Seijun starring Esumi Makiko. It is a remake and/or sequel of Suzuki's 1967 Branded to Kill. The plots of both films involve a third-ranked assassin deposing of the top-ranked assassin to claim his/her throne.

If you have not seen Shaolin Soccer yet, you need to. Funny as all Hel!

Versus (one of my personal all time favs) ~ There are 666 portals that connect this world to the other side. These are concealed from all human beings. Somewhere in Japan exists the 444th portal.... The forest of resurrection. A pair of escaped convicts meet up with a group of gangsters by a remote forest road. After an arguement over a girl the mobsters have kidnapped, shots are fired and one of the gangsters is killed. The standoff is cut short, however, when the dead man suddenly springs to life and starts trying to kill his former friends. The zombie eventually goes down in a hail bullets, but their problems aren't over. It seems the gangsters have been using this forest to dispose of of their victims, all of whom are now looking to settle some old scores. A Forest to Hell comes Alive with Death.
A man has only one death. That death may be as weighty as Mt. Tai, or it may be as light as a goose feather. It all depends upon the way he uses it....

versus wasn't too bad, just a bit wierded out. for whatever reason japan is obsessed with demons and demonic themes, oh well. the martial arts in thatfilm wasn't that bad though.

i don't like picking favourites, but recently i've liked house of the flying daggers and ong bak. for different reason and by different means i think they both brought some integrity into thier films respectively.

Has anyone seen Ichi the Killer? I was so close to picking that up, but had never seen it or heard anything about it. The explaination on the back made it sound like a great movie, but it was close to $30

    ICHI the killer.
if you're looking for martial arts in a film, Ichi the killer is not the way to go.
It is definately a very bizarre and grotesque movie. Very very wierd film. It's so weird that you'll either like it while still finding it odd, or totally hate it and still find it odd.
I don't want to give away too much of the film. Or any of it for that matter.
For me it was Mr. Kakahari that made the film worth watching and not Ichi.
don't watch this film if you have a weak stomach or if you're young and imressionable. Definately not a show for the kiddies.

few foreign(asian) films i have seen that i really liked is "2009: Lost Memories - futuristic movie about what would our world would be like if germany and japan won WWII, "Star Runner" - martial arts/love story movies, nice ma seens, "Musa: The Warrior" Zhang Ziyi is in it, "Returner", another futuristic but an awesome movie, and "So Close" with Shu Qi(yum yum).

those are few that i could find through my collection. if it's asian movie, i'll usually watch it.
