History of Competition in CMA

Thought I'd start a thread on this (partly because I'd like to carry over some examples to another forum's thread). Bascially, I know competition has been going on for quite awhile (at least application competition) and I was wondering if some people could give examples of how it's been used over the years to promote combative skills among CMA's over the milinea. The oldest example I can think of is Shui Jiao... and didn't the original name "Shui Jiao" have something to do with the garb they wore? (horned helmuts or something?).

In dynastic time, there was two examination system. One was literature exam, reserved for the promotion in civil offices. the other was martial exam, reserve for military careers.

In the military exam, you are expected to show proficiency in 18 standard weapons (sword, spear, the usual stuffs).

Must demonstrate strength by lifting these big "stone locks".

some hand to hand combat abilities.

note, these exams are set to demonstrate attribute to fight in group battles.

old china try to field a lot of infantry. It don't like too many duel-specialist in the army except for "special op" purposes.

BTW (for anyone reading this) Finally had great spring weather today which means I've gotta bail on my thread (and the forum... work for me increases dramatically once the weather gets nice ).
