Actually, it depends on the wall. One made of layered flat rock would work great.
Those that are the most sucessful are also the biggest failures. The difference between them and the rest of the failures is they keep getting up over and over again, until they finally succeed.

"72 Consummate Arts Secrets of the Shaolin Temple"

Anyone purchased this book? Does it deal mostly with techniques shown in Shaolin documentaries and photo books, such as water slapping, sticking fingers in sand, iron palm. Recommended?

you talking about the book with orange cover? if so i got it. "eh" nothin special. some of the arts described can be done with modern weight training equipment and others are not desribed good enough to practice safely. just for the hell of it is an ok book i guess, if you can get it cheap. at the end it has an acupuncture chart and some strange herbal remedies.
A BJJ player and notorious pimp, Da Big Deezy, in the Crenshaw district tried to "raise up" and "slap a ho" ..... I impaled him with my retractible naginata. I wish there were more groundfighters in the world. They make my arsenal that much more deadly. - john takeshi

    It's a classic

...but it suffers from a poor translation. 72 has been floating around CMA circles for a while now. Almost any Chinese-reading martial artist is familiar with it. The methods range from realistic to poetic to magical. Some would work. Others seem toxic. The 'orange' book is the only translation to English, but some of it has been translated in Chow and Spangler.

ringing a bell from a distance after practicing red sand palm for instance falls in the category of bullsh1t.

Breaking your knuckle repititiously really isn't that good for you and yes, there is a modicum of pure crap here and there throughout both of those books. For the unschooled, it could be a path of danger. For the discerning, take it for what it is.

But, it's still an ok book as books go. Reading books won't instill kungfu in someone, just provide a little lamp.
Kung Fu is good for you.

I had one in chinese version. the theory of this book are scientific, they are the
soul of thousands years shaolin monks experience. i don't know how they
translate the book, or maybe not the original version. it was edited by Buddhist
monk De Yu and Su FA. buddhist monk DE Chan write the books name, they are all famous monks in chinese shaolin history. most of chinese respect them very
very much. it does a rare gift for the shaolin gongfu!
if you are dedicated to real gongfu, this book is the first choice.

you may choose one or two gongfu to learn, but you must learn their basic.
let me know which you are prefer, i would like to translate some of them for you
if you can understand my english.

Some seem like they would work,
like digging the hole and jumping out repeatedly,
    or kicking the tree.
but i'm skeptical about things like cinnabar palm.

    Chen Jia

There's a vid if you follow the link.
That's how you play with fire! Incredible footage shows man blowing out 15 candles by punching the AIR

Video captures the 27-year-old snuffing out all candles in 10 seconds
Reports say that he has practised Shaolin kung fu for more than a decade
He can also break wooden stick and a nine-pound stone with bare hands

This is the incredible moment a young Chinese man manages to extinguish 15 candles with air punches.
Chen Jia, 27, can be seen punching out the candles in less than 10 seconds in the clip.
The footage was uploaded to Chinese video sharing site Miaopai on October 12.
Impressive man puts out candles by using the air from fist pump

Chen Jia, 27, is about to use inner energy to punch out the 15 candles placed in front of him

He reportedly deployed a Shaolin move named 'Sun Ray Fist' to give air punches repeatedly
Chen comes from China's Henan province which is the birthplace Shaolin martial arts.
Shaolin Kungfu is known as China's largest school of kungfu.
Chen said that he was often challenged by people who thought his skill was either 'fake' or 'impossible'.
In order to prove the authenticity of his stunt, another man wearing a black shirt, who was thought to be a reporter, is seen giving punches to the air in the video. However, he fails to put out the candles.
In the latter part of the video, Chen can be seen breaking a candle and a wooden stick by using a knife-hand strike.
He even manages to break a stone weighing almost nine pounds into two with his right hand.

Amazing moment: All fifteen candles were blown out in less than ten seconds

Another man is seen giving punches however he fails to blow out the candles

Chen said he mastered the technique four years ago and had practiced kung fu for a decade.
Chen told reporters at China News that he used a move called 'Sun Ray Fist', one of the 72 Shaolin Arts to punch out the candle.
The technique involves use of 'qi', a form of inner energy, to extinguish the candle lamp placed at least eight steps away, according to a Chinese government website that introduces national martial arts.

Chen chops a candle (left) before cutting a wooden stick in half (right)

Impressive skills: He was also filmed breaking a pebble in half using his bare hands

Chen claimed he had recently gained another skill from the 72 Shaolin Arts - to break rock with bare hands.
The reporter from China News took him to the park in order for him to showcase his stunt.
With a few punches, Chen managed to break a stone, weighing four kilograms (8.8 pounds), into two.
Onlookers stopped to watch his performance.
One witness, surnamed Zhao, doubted his claim and gathered two more stones for him to break apart.
'He also broke those stones,' Zhao said.
To maximise his hand strength, he practices doing push-ups using his fingers every day.
He also claims that he can do a handstand using one single finger.
This isn't the first case of videos showing people extinguishing candles with a punch.
Amir Khan, a famous boxer, punched off eight candles in just a single punch.

    Tongue fu

I'm trying to imagine a practical application of this and everything that comes to mind is rather prurient.

There's a vid behind the link...

Don't try this at home! Unbelievable moment Chinese man stops a rotating fan with his TONGUE

Footage shows man stopping fan blades with his fingers and his tongue
After seeing similar performances, the man started practisting the stunt
He can also put a spinning drill into his nostrils without getting hurt

This is the jaw-dropping moment when a daredevil Chinese man tried to use his tongue to stop a fast rotating electric fan.
The 62-year-old, named He Kuimin, could be seen sticking out his tongue while leaning towards the home appliance.
Incredibly, he successfully stopped the turning fan by putting his tongue between the blades.
Moment man called 'fan man' sticks tongue perilously into fan

Eye-opening: A man stunned the internet after he stopped a turning fan with his tongue

Incredible: He Kuimin, from Hunan, stuck out his tongue and leaned towards the rotating fan

Posted by Sichuan News Broadcast to Youku, a video-sharing platform in China, the footage shows the fan was placed in the middle of a room as the man made the attempt.
It had been turned on and the white blades were moving at high speeds.
Before he put his tongue into the fan, He Kuimin roared and stuck two of his fingers into the spinning blades.
The blades immediately came to a brief halt.
Afterwards, Mr He withdrew his fingers and the fan resumed working.
The skill is thought to be 'Diamond Finger', which is one of the 72 stunts from the Shaolin Kung fu in China.
Mr He can be heard breathing deeply after the performance.
Then, Mr He grabbed the fan with his right hand and stuck out his tongue
He pressed one button on the electric fan, a move believed to slow down the speed of the fan's movement.

Jaw-dropping: The fan had been turned on and the white blades were moving at high speeds

How does he do it? Incredibly, Mr He stopped the rotating fan by sticking his tongue in them
Then he slowly leaned towards the fan and used his tongue to stop the blades.
A noise can be heard clearly before the three blades were brought to a stop.
He Kuimin is originally from Hunan Province but now lives in Guangdong Province.
The video also shows another favourite act of the 62-year-old man who started practicing different stunts since his retirement, according to a Xinhua report.
He can be seen putting an electric drill into his nostrils.
It appears that his nose remained unhurt after he stuck a four-inch-long spinning drill into both nostrils.

Another stunt: Mr He is also able to put a four-inch-long spinning drill into his nose

LIVE: First ever Kung Fu competition in Shaolin Temple of Mount Song

I just heard from Chris Friedman who said the title of this competition is Shaolin 72 ji da sai 少林七十二技大赛 (Shaolin 72 Special skills competition). This makes a lot more sense because it evokes the 72 Consummate Arts Secrets of the Shaolin Temple

I'm changing the title of this thread accordingly from Shaolin "Eastern Olympics".
