Could I become good at martial arts?

I smoke like a pack a day, have a beer gut, and have NO NONE flexibility whatsoever. Maybe this is from years of being lazy. I used to get in fights all the time, and felt that I had some real skillz. But now, I wouldn't dare challenge anyone who is bigger than me. I may be able to quit smoking one day(well maybe not the good stuff), but I am willing to learn based on your feedback.
"For someone who's a Shaolin monk, your kung fu's really lousy!"
"What, you're dead? You die easy!"
"Hold on now. I said I would forget your doings, but I didn't promise to spare your life. Take his head."
“I don’t usually smoke this brand, but I’ll do it for you.”
"When all this is over, Tan Hai Chi, I will kick your head off and put it on my brother's grave!
"I regard hardships as part of my training. I don't need to relax."

There are a few aikido schools I know of you'd fit in at.

Bring a banjo and your own recycled plastic "sport" bottle filled with Evian.

    Thumbs up

I practice wing chun and im surprised by ur description alot of people fit it its funny. I think if you want to be good at martial arts quit smoking drugs and eating junk its not a thing you get good at its a way of life. You just have to be willing to put in you only get out what you put in practice and time will bring the physical skill i think youre after but a mental state is youre job to change.

    LMAO!

Mat (6'1", 78 kgs, bout 10% body fat, don't smoke, can still kick head height with no warm up, touch palms to the floor with knees locked etc, workout every day...)

OK, OK, to answer the question: yes you can, but you're going to need to work. Even if you have loads of natural talent you have to work. Nowadays I have to stretch every day to keep up the flexibility I used to take for granted. And don't smoke until after 1800. Then smoke one cigarette an hour. You should quit but that'll be a start, by setting yourself a realistic achievable goal first - otherwise your attitude will not change.

Mat, do you really only have 10% body fat? I thought that men were supposed to have at least 18% to be healthy, and anything under that you were either A) dead or B) a supermodel.

Actually 18-20% is average for men, with 22-24% being average for women.

Some say being less than 10% is unhealthy (but that's debatable).

From the stats ive seen its 16 but 2% dont mean nothing yeh its debatable i think about the fact that organs need fat to insulate wat happen when you get below 4%
