OT: to see and do in Portland (Maine) and Boston?

Hey guys,

sorry for a blatant non kung fu use of the forum!

I'm over from Perth, Australia - to Portland, Maine and then to Boston for around two weeks in early November (university conference).

Any suggestions for things to do/see? I couldn't find any good upcoming gig guides (read: concerts etc) but I'd like to try for tickets for anything good early. Have pretty wide interests. I've found locals to have so much better suggestions than travel guides etc.

You can try http://boston.craigslist.org They have many listings by locals of many many things going on in various cities. Portland is small and nice, Boston has more of the culture here in the NE.

Beer is to be found in Portland in Old Port at Three Dollar Dewey's and Gritty McDuff's. Try the Shipyard Ale. There's a good boxing club in town, I forget the number. Try all the little restaurants in Old Port for supper. Check out the lobsterboats on the docks. Check out the farmers market at the top of the hill. Fun town with good food and music.

Theres' a lot to do in Boston, lots of concerts and plays, comedy clubs, museums, sporting events, nightclubs etc. There are regular free outdoor concerts on the Esplanade park along the Charles River and in the Boston Common. There are a lot of cool historic sites thoughout the city, old Revolutionary War battlegrounds, etc.

One of the best ways to get tickets for shows is thru Bostix https://tickets.artsboston.org/peo/default.asp?r=1680 which sells discounted tickets. They also have several bostix pavilions around the city which sell greatly discounted leftover tickets the same day as the show, i've used bostix a lot.

It will be easier to track smaller events closer to November, so check back a couple weeks before the trip. Most bigger concert events should show up somewhere in the links above for advance ticket purchase.
