How many politicians can say they’ve cosplayed as Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion? Lai Pin-yu sure can.
The 27-year-old Democratic Progressive Party candidate won a tight race in New Taipei City’s 12th District over the weekend. Taiwan News reports that Lai defeated former Taipei City Deputy Mayor Lee Yong-ping by 2,780 votes.
Maybe a rally she did in December dressed as Asuka helped with the...anime vote?
Before getting into politics, Lai was an activist and studied law at the prestigious National Taipei University.
When Lai knew she had won the seat, she uploaded a Sailor Mars from Sailor Moon cosplay photo to Facebook writing (translation via Taiwan News), “Hello friends, I am Lai Pinyu, lawmaker of New Taipei City’s 12th District. Please give me your feedback over the next four years.”
Besides cosplay photos, her Facebook page is filled with game, anime, and meme images:

How'd she get that past security?Grimes’ ‘Dune’-Inspired Met Gala Look Included a Sword Made From an AR-15
Gil Kaufman 3 hrs ago
Grimes
Grimes was a vision in futuristic silver at the Met Gala on Monday night (Sept. 13), rocking a Dune-inspired gown and enormous sword — which was apparently made out of “fermented guns” — to match her metallic mask.
The 33-year-old singer explained to Vogue that her custom body-hugging Iris van Herpen gown — made of liquid silicone and hand-pleated silk — was based on David Lynch’s legendary 1984 adaption of Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi novel Dune. The film has been re-made with Met co-host Timothée Chalamet, and is due out on Oct. 22.
“We were working with the Dune movie people,” Grimes told the mag, explaining that the film’s producers hired her as “a professional fan, or like, an influencer or something.” But after they couldn’t nail down anything official, she just kind of winged it and went her own, unofficial way.
The startling look — which reportedly took 900 hours to fashion — included a shiny silver metal face mask, lavender lace-up Marc Jacobs platform boots, bejeweled eyebrows, a small illuminated book, and that giant, attention-grabbing sword.

Beauty-PageantsThe network showed the national costume of Viktoriia Apanasenko for the Miss Universe
CULTURE The Odessa Journal 21 December, 2022 4 Comments 11,355 2 minutes read
This costume is called “Warrior of Light”. Ukrainian costume designer Lesya Patoka created it.

The network showed the costume of the winner of the Miss Ukraine Universe, Victoriia Apanasenko.
It is known that the costume of Victoria was named “Warrior of Light”. The designer of the incredible look was Lesya Patoka, who collaborated with Jamala, ONUKA, and other famous personalities.
The «Warrior of Light» costume symbolizes Ukraine nation’s fight against darkness. Like Archangel Michael, who defends Ukraine with a sword, it protects us. Viktoriia has a weapon in her hands, her body is covered in armor, and at the same time, she carries light through the darkness that came to our peaceful lands with the aggressor.
The monolithic jumpsuit symbolizes armor and wraps Viktoriia like a second skin.
The white dress consists of a stylization of a vyshyvanka with puffy sleeves and a skirt that has more than 10 meters of fabric to it. The headwear is decorated with spikelets, which are traditional in Ukraine. Symbolic wings are burned in battle, framed in blue and gold armor in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, and decorated with various mirror ornaments, opened for the decisive battle.
Here is how Lesya Patoka herself commented on her work:
“It was very important for us to create the image of not just a beautiful, but also a strong-willed girl who personifies the whole of Ukraine – unbending, courageous, free. Despite all the difficulties and challenges, we coped with creating the image on time, because each of us is a Warrior in his business.”
“Warrior of Light” costume is a personification of the inner strength of Ukrainians, our courage, determination and love of freedom flowing in our veins. In this costume, I wanted to embed the idea that war cannot break our strength and discolor our hearts. Even on a fire, like a phoenix, Ukraine will blossom and shine with bright rays of kindness and faith,” says Viktoriya Apanasenko.
Lesya worked on the costume for four months to the sound of sirens and without electricity.
Victoria Apanasenko will present this outfit at the National Costume Show on January 11, 2023 in New Orleans, USA.

FencingPRINCESS LEONOR WINS SILVER MEDAL IN FENCING COMPETITION
The future Queen of Spain began her three-year military training in 2023
BY ALEXANDRA HURTADO -NEW YORK
JANUARY 29, 2024 2:29 PM EST
En garde! Princess Leonor of Spain competed in the XXIV Sports Championship of Military Academies for Officers (InterAcademia) over the weekend. King Felipe and Queen Letizia’s 18-year-old daughter and her team came in second place in the mixed team fencing competition. The Princess of Asturias was pictured sporting her medal as she stood on a podium with her teammates from Zaragoza.

In addition to fencing during the sporting event, the Princess of Asturias reportedly also competed in volleyball. According to Spain’s Ministry of Defence, “Representative teams from the Academia General Militar (Army), The Escuela Naval Militar (Navy), Academia General del Aire (Air Force) and from the year 2017, the Academia Central de la Defensa (Defense), take part in the competitions” at the InterAcademia event.
Leonor began her first year of military training last August at the General Military Academy in Zaragoza. Her second year (2024-2025) “will be carried out in the Navy and will be carried out with the employment of Midshipman both in the Naval Military School of Marín, and aboard the Training Ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano, during its training voyage,” per Casa de S.M. el Rey. The future Queen of Spain will then “complete her third year in the Air and Space Army, joining the San Javier General Air Academy for the 2025-2026 academic year as a Student Ensign.”
Casa de S.M. el Rey has said that King Felipe and Queen Letizia consider their firstborn’s military training “very convenient and valuable: it reinforces the capabilities of service and dedication, and facilitates the representation tasks that she must assume, as Heir of the Crown of Spain, in accordance with the provisions of Title II of the Constitution.”

I saw her live at Outside Lands. Fabulous show.Chappell Roan Is Ready to Slay With Her Sheer Gown and Sword at the MTV VMAs
BY CAROL LEE PUBLISHED: SEP 11, 2024 6:21 PM EDT
Chappell Roan came fully prepared to slay at this evening’s MTV VMAs, bringing a literal sword with her. The singer, who is attending her first MTV VMAs tonight, wore a sheer maxi dress from Y/Project with a cloak on the carpet. She was handed her weapon by her own knight while posing for photos.
She’ll be performing later in the night.

The “Good Luck, Babe!” singer is nominated for four awards, including Best New Artist.
Roan’s “Hot To Go” is in the running for Best Trending Video, and “Good Luck, Babe!” is up for Song of the Summer. Meanwhile, “Red Wine Supernova” is on the shortlist for MTV Push Performance of the Year.
“I’ve never won anything,” Roan said on the red carpet. “It would be crazy to win. That would be awesome.”
Roan has had a year that many describe as “meteoric.” She recently told Rolling Stone that in June, post-Gov Ball performance, “I was getting almost a hundred thousand followers a day. At first, I was in severe denial. They would literally show me some stats and the only thing I could do is say, ‘No, no, no. It’s not like that.’ I couldn’t say, ‘I am gaining success.’”
“It’s my dream job,” she added. “I never know if it’s going to be like this ever again, which is kind of scary.”
She also revealed to the publication that she and songwriter Daniel Nigro have already been working on a new album: “We have a country song. We have a dancy song. We have one that’s really eighties, and we have one that’s acoustic, and we have one that’s really organic, live-band, seventies vibe. It’s super weird.”
On the pressure to top “Good Luck, Babe!” with another smash hit, she said, “[The next single] needs to have more grit, whether that means more pop grit or rock grit or just bite to the lyrics. Anything that I listen to—Joan Jett, Heart, Gaga—I want to feel like them. So I’ll just be inspired by that feeling and how I can capture it.”
