It seems Joaquin Phoenix is on a mission to get in shape at the age of 40.

The Inherent Vice actor was seen leaving a martial arts class on Sunday in Los Angeles after working up a sweat.

Joaquin, who turned 40 last month, appears to have been displaying a bulkier frame since completing filming for his upcoming role as a college professor in Woody Allen's latest untitled film.

And the Gladiator star packed a slightly bigger paunch than usual and a somewhat fuller face as he left the fitness studio.

Barefoot and wearing white trousers and a red polo neck, Joaquin did look like he had been training hard.

His hair was swept back and the clean shaven actor protected his eyes from the sun with a pair of shades.

In recent weeks, the Her star appears to have upped his exercise regime, attending martial arts classes and going for hikes.
