    I found this quote:

    "To practice Martial Arts, always be dumb and stubborn, never try to be smart and clever"
    -Liu Yun Chiao

    Can anyone point me toward the full story about the teacher and his ideals?

    Sure, there's volumns available with information about Liu. A simple web search would tell you that. That quote sounds similiar to one I've heard before. I guess it depends who's doing the translation.

    Here's a good translation of an article written about Liu's bagua and training I posted on my site.

    yes, there are books, articles on magazines, and lectures/speeches by him.

    I dunno where is this quote from.

    but, in general;

    When we practice, we have to have open mind and be persistent and consistent. doing the same thing right over and over.

    dumb= use the long way or the righ way.

    stubborn= insistence, persistence and consistence etc.

    There is no short cut in practice. Dun circumvent or bypass the practice of the very basic.

    If you jump ahead too early without good basic, everything is in vain.

    The wise man build the house on the rock and not on the sand. sort of.

    There is no substitute of the persistent practice of the basics over and over,
