Dude, I know. It gave me the willies during the film, days after and now once again after you mentioning it.

I love the film because it takes you through so many ups and downs and curves. It's a total mindphuck of a film.

When I first saw this movie years ago, I thought the twist at the end was really ballsy and unexpected, but it didn't freak me out. However, Oldboy is a real masterpiece in execution. I suppose the only thing to do is wait and see, but I can't imagine a remake being as good. In fact, I would be shocked if Will Smith played a character who suffers the plot twist that Oh Dae-Su did at the end. This would seem to be almost off-limits in a major American movie, esp. one starring Will Smith. I can imagine the plot twist being softened or changed entirely in an American remake.

    Old Boy Kill Bill

I just realized that Old Boy is the only Park Chan-wook flick I've seen. Can anyone recommend any of his other works?

Quentin Tarantino urged PARK Chan-wook to try Hollywood

According to major U.S. agency William Morris, PARK Chan-wook was advised by Quentin Tarantino to come to Hollywood to direct films. William Morris representatives also disclosed that they are in the process of finding a project which can interest PARK.

PARK’s definite international breakthrough was his critically acclaimed Old Boy, which was awarded the Grand Prix at the 2004 Festival de Cannes by a jury headed by Quentin Tarantino.

William Morris agency was present at the 2008 Korea-U.S. business campus held by Korean Film Council. William Morris agency is a leading U.S. agency who manages major stars in cinema, music, and sports.

oldboy is part of chan woo parks vengeance "trilogy", its not a trilogy in a way that lord of the rings is a trilogy, but a trilogy in the way that all three films have revenge as its underlying theme sorta like , mean streets, goodfellas, and casino are considered scoresesse's Mob "trilogy", the other two films are sympathy for mr. vengeance and sympathy for lady vengeance, both good films in their own right. check 'em out.

Yea, I've been told about the trilogy and those are the two to watch...

...which do you like better, Mr. or Lady? Most of my friends say Lady.

    Old Boy remake DEAD

    Thank goodness.
Exclusive: Will Smith & Steven Spielberg’s Old Boy DEAD!
By Kellvin Chavez on November 09, 2009

    Late Breaking News…

    This just in…

You know that OLDBOY remake…well it wasn’t really a remake, anyway (which is a terrible idea by the way) Steven Spielberg and Will Smith were suppose to do a film that was based on the Japanese manga by Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya and NOT FROM THE ORIGINAL FILM.

At the time DreamWorks was in the process of securing the rights along with MANDATE, until NOW.

    According to a trusted source…

    …It’s DEAD!

Mandate and DreamWorks didn’t see eye to eye therefore DreamWorks has apparently walked away.

    No Spielberg.

    No Will Smith.

    THEY’RE OUT!

Hence no stateside Oldboy remake…or whatever you want to call it.

    Stay tuned as more develops.

You guys should be hearing something in the trades soon.

That is outstanding news. Sure, if they made a remake I could simply opt to not see it, but IMO it would have been a slap in the face to the original. Spielberg may be great; Smith may be great; but there are just some things they aren't up to doing and would be best to leave alone. Oldboy is one of those things.

As far as the other two movies in Park's 'Vengeance Trilogy', between Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Lady Vengeance, I actually preferred Mr. Vengeance. They're both good, dark films, but I liked its pacing a bit better. Though I felt neither one of them holds a candle to Oldboy.

    Spike Lee lines up 'Oldboy'
Lee comes out of hiatus to helm Mandate Pictures' remake of South Korean thriller
    By Justin Kroll

Chan-wook Park's "Oldboy" took the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes in 2004.
After a three-year hiatus, Spike Lee has found his next feature directing project, committing to helm Mandate Pictures' remake of Chan-wook Park thriller "Oldboy."

The original pic revolves around a man who's kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years. When finally released, he begins looking into the reason for his captivity and soon finds out that his kidnapper has even more torturous plans for him.

The original film, released in South Korea in 2003 and in the U.S. in 2005, won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

Mark Protosevich has adapted the script; Roy Lee and Doug Davison are producing through Vertigo Entertainment and 40 Acres & A Mule Prods. Mandate prexy Nathan Kahane will exec produce.

Asian movie blog Twitchfilm.com was first to report that Lee was in early talks, but no offer had been made at the time and Mandate was still considering a handful of a directors -- including Mark Romanek.

An "Oldboy" remake has been a high priority at Mandate for some time, with Steven Spielberg at one point eyeing it to direct and Will Smith circling to star. When Spielberg and Smith moved on, the project went under the radar as Mandate began searching for new candidates.

Lee, repped by CAA, has not directed a feature since Touchstone's "Miracle at St. Anna" in 2008. Lee has also signed on to direct and exec produce a drama pilot for HBO, "Da Brick," loosely based on the life of Mike Tyson.

spike is a master filmmaker...i just hope he doesnt make it a black white racial thing, he seems to have done that with every film except inside man. which he cant get a studio to back to sequel so he needs a film like this.

    Sales News

The Thieves 도둑들 (pictured) proved a steal for a number of international distributors, which acquired the big-budget heist movie from South Korea's Showbox/Mediaplex Inc 쇼박스 미디어플렉스.

The film was licensed to China's Lava Films 火山石影視文化有限責任公司, Hong Kong's Edko Films Ltd 安樂影片有限公司 and Thailand's LH Moviefusion. Lava previously marketed South Korean comedy Scandal Makers 과속스캔들 (2008) in China.

Showbox also sold recent hit Nameless Gangsters: Rules of the Time 범죄와의 전쟁 : 나쁜놈들 전성시대 to Japan's KRCG, China's BINCI Media, Hong Kong's i-Cable Communications Ltd 有線寬頻通訊有限公司, French-speaking Europe to Metropolitan Filmexport, Spain's Mediatres Estudio and the former-Soviet Union and the Baltics to Russia's Maywin Films AB.

In addition, Showbox sold A Company Man 회사원 to Japan's Pony Canyon Inc ポニーキャニオン, Indonesia's Ram Indo, Thailand's STG Multimedia, Splendid Film for German-speaking Europe and to Synergy Cinema for French-speaking Europe. The Scent 간기남 was sold to Thailand's LH Moviefusion, Hong Kong's Edko Films and Singapore's Shaw Organisation.

New US-based sales firm Good Universe sold strongly on Oldboy, the Spike LEE-directed remake of the South Korean thriller originally directed by PARK Chan-wook 박찬욱. Universal Pictures International Entertainment bought the now-in production film to the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Australia and Spain. The remake stars Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley. Spike Lee is producer alongside Roy LEE and Doug DAVISON. Good Universe's Nathan KAHANE is an executive producer.

French sales agency, Wild Bunch licensed Cannes competition film Holy Motors (directed by Leos Carax) to Japan's Eurospace ユーロスペース. And Comstock Group コムストック・グループ and Broadmedia Studios Corporation ブロードメディア・スタジオ株式会社 co-acquired Marina de Van's psychological thriller Dark Touch for Japan.

**** they sold the film, with just a few frames, must be good..lol...chan woo park, gave this film his blessing after reading the script and because spike lee was directing...so im leaning more and more into watching this...according to josh brolin, they made some changes to the original which is good to me...a frame for frame remake of anything is pretty stupid. i think if you remake a film, you should find its weakness and try to strengthen it...dont know if thats exactly what happened but we will see.

as for racial twist...totally can happen...just changed the whole (SPOILER ALERT) sleeping with his sister thing,...instead of getting caught with his sister, the villain could have been the son of a racist senator and got caught sleeping with a black women...something to that effect lol....that would suck but anything can happen.

but im like the cast... josh brolin, Elizabeth olsen, Sharlto copley.. not bad...not bad at all.
