    student's first fight

Yes, the guy was a wounded gazell (I wish my student chose the other guy near his weight) but it was a good first experience... he even took a decent shot (hand way too wide (door open)... did a nice job of shielding a straight which he should have hopped on but I'm stoked. I know he's stoked.... wanted to see him make that jump, that commitment to his training, before I leave. They came and got all my stuff today. 14 days until a new world for me

Rock on. I'm not a fan of the dropped hands, but I know it's your thing and it seems to work for you and your students.

I'm assuming you're relocating for the surfer chica? My wife is Puerto Rican and she's a handful. Good luck!

We're not together right now... she was more of a handful that I could handle. I decided it still makes mad sense to move down there where I can live clean and easy (surf, spear fish, etc.) and save some money and buy something.

As a single writer in NY it's just too expensive, you need like $75,000 just to get into the market.

Which one is your student? I'm assuming the one in the white t-shirt just because of the lack of footwork, stance, dropped hands, etc. although he did pretty well against the other guy.

Do you try to do any CMA? Or just boxing? Because it doesn't really look like there's any CMA in there. This isn't meant to be any sort of insult because the guy seemed to do fine, just wondering what you train these guys in.

I guess the point I was trying to make with the prior post is if you are indeed teaching the student CMA, then it might be better for the student to have some stance and keep the upward hand out more.

I think before you said you were a bagua student. With the hand close to the chin like that there's no opportunities for parrying.

this is a FINE example of what's called a backhanded compliment, and further testament to LHS's total lack of ability to engage someone conversationally without acting like a mealey mouthed pr1ck: I mean, how can you NOT take the comment "lack of footwork, stance, dropped hands" as even remotely positive? the "he did prety well" thing at the end is just a lame way to try and veil the criticism, since it would be hard to say he did anything other then well, as he got the guy to tap out

and to say "just" boxing kinda frames it in a somewhat dismissive tone as well

to say it "doesn't look like CMA" is to reveal the total fantasy world he lives in, since, I would like to know, what SHOULD CMA look like? please enlighten us on that one...

of course, the obligatory "this is not an insult" qualifier at the end is supposed to make up for the rest of the post, so what else is new...

didnt mean to participate in the thread derail. just ross is so funny i have to chime in now and then.

    back on track now:

Hey ray. how long has your guy been training, and are you the first trainer he has had?

I'm his only teacher. He's been with me for two years now I think. His hands are actually really good. I have a hard time getting in on him myself now... I think he was a little nervous and opened his door a bit too much.... but he toughed out taking a decent shot and we got the footage so we can revue it.

He's a good kid. I introduced him to my master so he can continue his training after I leave but it might be hard for him to train in that environment: he's used to gearing up and drilling with intention, rolling. Might be hard to do excercises in the air with "seniors" who are too good to play with and the drama that goes along with that. But he loves weapons and my master is great.

One of the reasons I wanted him to get a fight in before I go is because I wanted him to feel that for himself: how to go and test your stuff and get feedback. Than he can train anywhere and build himself.

    Dropped hands....

Not a bad tactic. Some of the better stylistic fighters I've seen used the dropped hands approach for the same reason you stated.....

Don't have to worry about long punches much anyway, (and you still have effective defense options) you mostly worry about kicks at a distance, and if you clear a kick, you can close in for a world of devastating strikes. JKD uses the same thing....

Every teacher I've ever had has repeated one thing---a kicker will always lose to a punch....unless he's Chuck Norris, of course.

Seemed like a good first fight. Since it was his first, I can see why he was a bit tentative. Hopefully he'll be a little more aggressive next time when he sees the openings he had in front of him. He had plenty. But I'm sure it was just jitters/caution.

Stances aren't overrated, though. They provide a good way to close/clear distances and work the floor---something he could benefit from. I know it was a small floor, but even then a good fighter with footwork can get his opponent on his heels with little more than that.

Seems like you're doing a good job as a mentor.

But for real......was that guy a thai boxer, or was he just frontin' the shorts?

And LKFMDC.........please paraphrase this post and make it into something funny....I'm laughing my ass off.....you have no idea.... HAHAHA!!!!! Anal warts....

since when? JKD's bai jong is a hands up posture. The lead hand isn't any lower than about chin level. Some of us would lower the hand, but we were always advised against it. http://www.hardcorejkd.com/what_is_hjkd.php - the guy in the banner has his hands properly.

Maybe I'm missing something, but you are the moron who said that footwork and stances weren't important, and lkfmdc is the one who spouts all the childish insults.

And Ray hasn't won a single MMA fight yet he's teaching some kid.

Bottom line is you are pretty much pudding-heads.
