    Ne Waza

Getting hooks in and taking the back/turning uke over to take the back or pin.

    Drilling this

Uke attempts a Ouchi Gari we counter with ouchi gaeshi

We also countered ouchi gari with Tai Otoshi

    and

    Uki Otoshi
We turned to face the other way on the uke otoshi, similar to tai otoshi.

Both of these involved using uke's forward momentum. Uke had to be committed to the ouchi gari.

    Randori.

I got thrown with Ogoshi once, and ouchi gari a couple times. I countered hip throws with tani otoshi a couple times, and landed a harai goshi

I really like harai. I felt I was too far to get it but my legs took out his and he went.

    BJJ

    Jimmy taught

    Guard Pass

Post arm on mat (bait) uke grabs wrist. lift and grab uke's wrist, pin it to the mat. Stack uke forward and thread uke's arm you have under him and grab with your other hand. Proceed to break guard and pass on the side that uke has only one arm.

    Combat base guard pass.

Stand up in guard. Step back with your right foot then bring it forward. Get your knee between you and uke. Take a knee on your left knee your right knee in front of you, which made uke's guard really loose . This is combat base. Break and pass.

    Drilled guard vs. guard passer

    Ne Waza Randori.

Rolled with Anthony and guy who's name I can't remember. Kept good positions, did get caught in a kimura once, didn't get any subs (spent a lot of time with mount though)

Andrew told me when standing in guard to have better posture.

Rolled with Andrew. He submitted me once, better by positions also.

Rolled with Jimmy, submitted me 3 times.

    Koshi Guruma

Right high collar grip, bring elbow close to you so it breaks uke's posture down.

    Self Defense
Uke has you in headlock and is punching you, grab his free hand with your right. Execute a kosoto gari as a sacrafice throw.

    Cross arm choke

Uke has collar grip inside of your guard. Pop hips up, break his grip, overhook the arm. Grip his lapel on the other side with the overhook side. With free arm grab his gi around his shoulder. Shrimp to the side and pull his gi. If he has his chin down you can pry it with your elbow or shake.

Uke posts on your bicep to prevent this, armbar to opposite arm.

If these don't work you can get a triangle.

Drills, one person's job to pass guard, other persons job keep guard or sweep.

    Rolling

Phil: I landed the Koshi Guruma we talked about in class. No submissions either way, traded positions.

Jimmy: Got two throws on him, he got a billion submissions on me. Got me with Americanas, kimuras, and rolling armbars. He did compliment me on my takedowns.

    Andrew: Beat on me.

    Uchi Komi and Throws for:

    Ippon Seoi Nage

    and

    Uchi Mata

For uchi mata, I need to get my step behind Lower and Deeper. For Ippon Seoi I need to do the same.

It wasn't my best practice. I wasn't doing anything too well. I worked all day, though, that shouldn't be an excuse.

    No randori. No bjj.

Scott took the yellow belts aside to review what they should know, such as:

De Ashi Harai, Osoto Gari, Kouchi Gari, Hiza Guruma, Ippon Seoinage, O goshi, Uchi Mata, as well as Kesa Gatame, Yoko Shiho Gatame, and Kami Shiho Gatame

Scott said something about the yellow belts testing next week, I haven't been a yellow belt that long, and don't feel I'm ready for the test, but I guess he knows best.

    BJJ hour

    3 minute sweep drills.

    Gi Choke from guard

Pull uke's lapel out. Hand his gi skirt around his head. From your right hand hand to your left, then bring the right under and grab again (make sure you have all 4 fingers so uke can't break your grip on this material). Grab (going under your right hand) the collar material on your right side with your left hand. With elbows close pull in.

Uke Grabs your hand with his right hand to defend. Pull that arm to the mat, sit around him with your stomach on his shoulder and grab deep, roll him over. If he resists take his back.

Instead of defending the choke with his right, he does with his left. Pull his left arm across his body (while keeping the grip on the gi material), pull his head in, pull material. This is like a triangle.

    Rolling.

Rolled with Guy. Traded positions, took mount and passed his guard. Got no submissions.

Rolled with Bobby. Managed to avoid submissions, I had the help of Jimmy coaching me through this.

Rolled with Randy. Jimmy kept telling me about posture when I was standing up in open guard, I was leaning forward. I will try to focus on this in the future. Randy got a choke on me.

Rolled with Paul. He got me with an armlock.

Rolled with Randy again from standing. I tried an arm reversal/Ude Gaesh which didn't work, so Randy had my back.

No Judo randori today, only BJJ. I like a balance of both.

    Good practice.

    Standing up in base

Ippon seoinage from blocking a punch.

    De La Riva Guard

    Three Sweeps

Closest thing I could find online

    Free Rolling

Rolled with Andrew, he got two single legs on me. He also got me with ude garame/americana from kesa gatame (a weakness of mine, I need to keep my arms in).

Rolled with Phil. Traded positions, no submissions either way. Same happened last week.

Rolled with long hair guy. Got one armbar, dominated positions.

Rolled with Judo guy, I attacked the whole time, he got me with ude garame in kesa gatame.

In the standup I didn't land any clean throws but two times people just fell down and I attacked the whole time. It was a good night.

Good blog! How long does it take (on average) to get a black belt in judo? Also, where could one buy one of those inner tubes you mentioned training with? thanks-

    Uchi Mata

We spent most of the class working on uchi mata. Fits, throws, and details. I need to remember NOT to step too deep with the first step so I can step deep with the second. Transfer the weight to the back foot, loading uke on to your hip. As always, high sleeve pull and chest contact.

Promise throws, I worked on: Koshi Guruma, harai goshi, Osoto Gari, and harai tsurikomi ashi

Rolled with Al. Got him with an armbar.

phoenixrising, you can get resistance tubes for like 10$ at a D!cks sporting goods, they come with an attachment to fit in your doorway. I actually have no idea how long it takes to become a blackbelt.

Went over Tani Otoshi from uke blocking your hips with theirs. Uke blocks when you are stepping in for a throw. Step to the side making a T with uke. Kazushi his arm into his stomach and pull his collar.

    Sumi Gaeshi
You have uke's posture broken down, step the left foot deep, right foot behind knee. Pull uke and throw him at an angle.

    BJJ

    Randy taught

    Scissors sweep

Scissors sweep doesn't work, go to Star Sweep.

Star sweep doesn't work, rolling omoplata.

    Scissors sweep doesn't work, triangle.

Rolled with Andrew (bjj blue belt), he controlled and got two armbars.

Rolled with Rick (judo black belt), no submissions either way.

Rolled with Randy (bjj blue belt), first time no subs either way, second time after class he choked me.

    Moving uchi komi

harai goshi, Koshi Guruma, Osoto Gari, Tai Otoshi

Groups of four, throw each person 10 times, I focused on the same throws as above.

Promise throws, i also focused on those throws.

    BJJ, Randy taught.

    Bull Fighter pass

From standing in guard, grab knee gi material, push legs into uke. When uke pushes back, pull the legs down and stap around to the side.

    Half guard pass #1

You are in half guard and you get the underhook with your right arm. Shoulder into uke's chin (to prevent him from sweeping), bring your hips high and your leg in half guard (right leg) to your left side, place the knee to the floor. If uke hangs on, shake his feet loose.

    Half guard pass #2

You don't have the underhook. Bring your body to where you're looking at uke's feet (he should only see your back). Wedge your left arm under his and grab his belt. Use your right hand to push his legs down. You can also use your foot to help free the leg.

    Rolled with Mark's brother

    Traded positions, no submissions.

    Rolled with Julian

He submitted me once by a choke.

    Rolled with Carlos

    No submissions.
