    Cool.

    That's very basic Baguazhang jibengong.

I'm not clear why it is flameworthy at Bullshido. I guess you guys don't bother with warming up with hindu pushups or stretch splits or any other sissy stuff like that. You did realize that that's what "jibengong" means right? It means "basic exercises". That includes things like stretch kicks, working a speed bag, skipping rope, shrimping drills or any other basic exercise that is specifically associated with a given art. For instance this is also a jibengong I practice on occasion:

I just saw the Bullshido version. I didn't realize you had added music for comical effect. Just saw the pic and thought it was my old jibengong vid.

    Nevermind.

Actually, I think that was the only one that was really Bagua related. If you were looking for a comedy clip, among my collection, my personal fave is this one:

Always happy to have an excuse to show off my TV appearance with Shifu though:

Note: We don't actually dress up in the kungfu jammies for class unless a TV crew is present.

I looked at the vids of you and use your sifu.he mentioned that you trained in several other styles, but that when you saw him in the park, he knocked you down easily. was that sparring or a drill?

    Indestructable,

It is. I never learned it by that name but it's the same thing.

    SevenStar,

I am not sure if you mean when he was just talking about it in the interview of the bit of push hands in the clip. I created a shorter clip of the push hands a while back here:

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=IrXz6mZJQes

That knockdown is just freestyle push hands. The first throw was completely freestyle. No specific rules beyond "stick to Taijiquan".

If you meant him talking in the interview, it was neither. You don't really "spar" with Shifu. You can try and attack and he puts you down generally on the first move. That's what happened. I honestly don't remember it being that dramatic. I think I tried to grab his arm or something and he threw me. On rare occasions you get do do some brief sparring with him but the primary tool for developing Taijiquan skills is push hands. The way he does it, it is every bit as "alive" as Judo Randori but with punches added in. Honestly it's a very fine line between freestyle push hands and sparring. Push hands just has tighter stylistic requirements in order to train a specific type of reaction into you. Aside from all the esoteric stuff I'd say that the main things are just that you never lose contact with your opponent and you never really use force. The moment you "lock horns" with someone Shifu will generally call for a break and make you start over. It's supposed to drill in the idea of going with everything. You can counter, sweep, punch, grab, small joint manipulation, choke, whatever you want. You just aren't allowed to power through anything. If it ain't working, you have to give it up and go to something else.

There's more "typical" push hands too but that's not what he focuses on.

Those "several other styles" included about years of Hung Gar, about 4 years of TKD and about 3-6 months in a half dozen other random things like EPAK, Aikido, Kali, Kickboxing and others.
