the kung fu forum is the heart of this place and to change it as u suggested would simply make it suck
It almost counted as a good reason but then again, no coherency. I'll take your advice under consideration however it still has no substance. Next time try coming from a different angle. You may get better results.

As it turns out a majority of the regulars here regularly post ot stuff in the kungfu forum.

This forum has been fine for a long time, and when a newbie who does not know the regulars, how we operate, or have a feel for the way the board has been (for years) comes along with a suggestion, in a public forum (rather than sending Gene a private message, or at least putting it on the magazine/website subforum) you're going to get jumped on.

You are free to post something that will get you jumped on, I'm a mod also.

You can post what you feel, you can post what you think, but that doesn't mean you wont get a harsh response, especially when you give us a newbie suggestion like this.
Such tremendous opposition to a seemingly benign suggestion I did not see coming. I put it where it was going to get the most viewed...that was not a mistake. It was only for Gene and I only responded to certain drivel is a courtesy. It was Gene's response that I was waiting for. I still think it a valid suggestion regardless of the disagreements and tantrums thrown by some of the regulars. Like I said before, this is not the first time I have put something out there that didn't sit well with people. Too bad. It happens and it will continue to happen. That is a given. Your responses, save for the few courteous ones, have given me some insights about the regulars who post on here.

Given my personal choice, it would all be one giant forum with no distinctions. We'd let the better threads rise to the top in a truly democratic fashion. Of course, we'd surely only wind up with pornographic flame wars, but such is democracy in action. At some point, we may well introduce a few new forums, but right now, our attention is devoted to updating our commerce websites, www.MartialArtsMart.com and www.TigerClaw.com. Got to pay some bills, don't you know...

Which reminds me, we are working on changing our forum host. We may be down for a short spell when that happens. I'll make a general announcement soon, if this is impending.

MK & Oso playing good cop/bad cop - man, that's just like something out of a bad episode of Law & Order SVU...
Well, you were a bit late but we all know that you are busy doing your thing. I was not aware that this had already been discussed at some length and felt that it would help the forum (I see nothing detrimental about this suggestion). Every negative response that has been posted really fails offer any valid rebuttal but basically just states (paraphrasing) that that's the way that you guys have been doing it for years now. It just causes me to roll my eyes.

Yes, in true democratic fashion, I can see your point about the flame wars...more so now based on the responses that I got before yours. Although being new is inevitable (we have to start somewhere), I didn't think that it would have any bearing on my suggestion. I thought that my words would be looked and and didn't expect that my status be used as a negative. But rolling with the good and the bad is part of what we do. Apparently, very few people here were concerned about setting a good example for new members (even though some of us are around the same age).

Anyway, thanks for the heads up about the new host.

And I appreciate that you took time out to respond.

You fell into a newbie trap, I'm afraid

Many of our veteran members are unkind to newbies, mostly because we're so infested by trolls. Many of our veteran members are trolls too. We've tried spraying for them. We've tried the no-trolls strips, but they keep coming back. After all, this is a martial arts forum, so we all like to fight after a fashion. Of course, fighting on an online forum is a bit trivial, but hey, for most of us, it beats whatever it is we're supposed to be doing when sitting at our monitors.

冠木侍, if you want to post, it's always good to search first. Look before you leap. Search before you post. And if you're only trying to speak to one person, PM them instead of posting. Posts are in the public forum and will always garner response from the general membership.

There's often a hazing in the martial arena. Here on our forum, getting battered about for an early post is a typical hazing. Happens to the best of us. Welcome to the forums.

BTW...I'm sure I saw some challenges when I first got here...
sure, it happens...but hands usually get smacked at the very least and then they get banned at least temporarily if it gets out of hand.

imo, you seem to have a rather utoptian outlook on how things should be.

I think that may be an understatement Gene

I was very careful to word my post as non-offensive as possible but it seems that the "veteran trolls" here will interpret it any which way and then just run with that ball. It all happened in such a short time span while I was awaiting your response (and only yours). I guess you could say that I fell into a trap but then again, it actually turned out to be a good experiment at gaging the type of personalities you have on board here.

I find it funny that you used the word "hazing." This being a MA forum, and the members being such, I thought that they were above such juvenile tactics. I had experienced such things at other forums and thought that this place would be a little different. Sharing a commonality had, in my past experience, a way of ingratiating newcomers. However, as was witnessed, I had incorrectly surmised. But I am not put off in any way. The trolls will always be there and they are free to post whatever garbage enters their minds and exits through their finger tips. I leave the enforcement up to you and your entourage. Still, this valuable experience and those past has made me more aware of spotting such posts.

Yeah, it would be a good idea to search first. I'm sure I would have found this thread and most likely have resurrected it with the same result and same reaction from your "veteran" members. I could have sent you a PM but I had posted on the public forum to prove my point...besides, all the other OT stuff was being posted there as well Point well-taken though Gene. I'm sure you all have discussed everything under the sun, moon, stars and galaxy...but as we progress in our training and our experience, I'm sure that the same questions will arise from younger and newer members who look to these "veterans" for answers based on their knowledge and experience. I know that it may have looked as if I were disturbing the status quo over here but as I explained earlier, that is not the case. Like you said, the trolls had come out to play and age and experience here in this forum does not necessarily imply respect or deference (based on what just happened).

Anyhoo, thank ye for the warm welcome Gene.

    Utopia?

People are people...depending on your definition of said word.

Interesting...no one has ever used "Utopian" to describe my ideas before. Delusions of grandeur, a vision of perfection...

Hehe...it may be a stretch though. I think that if that were the case, I would have described a complete overhaul of certain things but I just pointed out one little thing that didn't seem to sit right.

I'm sure you'll agree that we all have ideas that would make things a little better or make things run more smoothly (possibly) in our lives but we both know that Utopia is an almost impossible ideal and that mode of thinking is often times wasted.

Maybe studying combat is one path that will lead to a Utopia....?

    Nah. Probably not.

    Take care Sir.

hiya, I liked your post/response to Gene.

utopia/perfection: enh, we're human. ergo: beyond us.

mostly, my last was having a laugh at myself.

welcome and keep the fire extinguisher at hand.

Dude, if you can find cause for laughter within this human comedy, then good for ya.

Yes, Utopia is an ideal. However, based on an adage...since we have all experienced so much imperfection, it would stand to reason that we would know what perfection is (and strive toward such a goal...but that is where the logic fails).

I appreciate the advice. What's a few more battle wounds...?

Yeah, I got the one that looks like a chef (as seen on TV).
