    Pekiti Tirsia Kali

For anyone unfamiliar with Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje: He was primarily responsible, along with Dan Inosanto and Remy Presas, of popularizing the Filipino martial arts in the United States during the '70's and '80's.

GT Gaje taught primarily in New York during that time. He currently lives in the Philippines. The shift towards training the miltary is relatively recent; it is worth noting that the weapon that Filipino Marine Recon soldiers will carry in the field is the "bolo" or Filipino machete.

PT is awesome, but is it something you can practice on your own between classes since a lot of it relies on partner drills?

Sure - because anything that you can practice in a drill can be practiced solo with an emphasis on the body mechanics that allow the technique to be the most efficient. For example, the footwork of Pekiti Tirsia places you in a position wherein the body torques and un-torques in a very specific manner: the strike with the stick or sword is actually the end-product of this mechanic.

When you practice with a partner (drills) you emphasize how to use your timing, angling, distancing etc., in tandem with the mechanic of producing a proper strike or parry; in solo practice you emphasize the mechanic per se so that it is finely honed when you go back to partner practice.

    Best,
